Richard Francis Grace
SARATOGA SPRINGS – Richard Francis Grace, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 10, 2016.
Richard was born in Rutland, VT, on June 20, 1932, to Francis and Margaret Grace. He spent his youth in the Rutland area, graduating from Rutland High School. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Marilyn Ann Grace. They were married in Rutland, but moved to New York shortly thereafter, having resided over the years in Lake Placid, Albany, South Glens Falls, and finally in Saratoga Springs.
After high school, Richard pursued a semi-professional basketball career with the Rutland Comets and the Manchester Snowman. In approximately 1952, Richard became a member of the Honor Guard where he was given the privilege of being a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After the service, Richard began his working career with Firestone, later with Natale Cadillac, and then finishing his career as Director of Weights and Measures for Saratoga County. For years following his retirement, he served as a volunteer at Saratoga Hospital.
Richard is predeceased by his parents; his brothers William and John (Jack) and his son Richard Jr. In addition to his wife Marilyn, he is survived by his sister Mary Margaret Grace; sons Timothy and Todd; daughters-in-law Nancy and Patty and by his amazing grandchildren Dillon, Taylor, Kendall, Rachel, and Devin, who knew him simply as “Pop.”
Especially in his later years, Richard was the ultimate people person. He loved meeting people and talking with everyone. Through the course of his life in his working career, golf club memberships, volunteer work, and even sitting at the mall waiting for his wife, he met thousands of people. He was adored and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
There were no public services; burial was private at the convenience of the family. Richard was laid to rest in the Calvary Cemetery in Rutland, alongside his parents, brother Jack, and his son.
At the end of his life, Richard was in the loving care of the wonderful nurses, doctors, and staff of the Palliative Care Services unit of Saratoga Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Palliative Care Services, Saratoga Hospital, 211 Church St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
