The following is the third part in a series featuring local volunteer fire companies and their individual and unique place in today’s changing world. With volunteerism at an all-time low, tough economic times affecting budgets and rapidly growing communities, Saratoga County’s volunteer fire departments are facing new challenges in keeping with 21st century living.

MALTA — According to a variety of news reports on several high-tech websites and forums, GlobalFoundries and Apple may be close to negotiating a deal in which the fab would manufacture the main processors for its iPhone and iPad devices. 

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nearly 22,000 people attended Sunday’s open house at Saratoga Race Course. Racing season begins this Friday and runs through Monday, September 2. 

BALLSTON SPA — Statements made to police by Joey Paul in the shooting death of her boyfriend will be allowed to be entered as evidence during her upcoming trial. Joey Paul, 29, is accused of shooting her unarmed boyfriend, 28-year-old Matthew Furlani at point blank range in the back of the head July 1, 2012. Furlani had been sleep in his bed in the Church Street, Schuylerville apartment. She pled not guilty in February to the murder. 

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Police Department is presently investigating a report of a missing person. The missing person is Deborah Kline, 52, of Columbia Avenue, Saratoga Springs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — And they’re off. Well not quite, but get ready to saddle up and enjoy a fun-filled day getting a sneak peak at Saratoga Race Course’s 150th summer season this Sunday, July 14. 

BALLSTON SPA — After a long and harrowing process of selecting a candidate for the position of Saratoga County Animal Shelter supervisor, The Saratoga County committee that oversees personnel matters voted July 8 to appoint 48-year-old Deborah Oligny as the new supervisor of the shelter.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Being rejected is an experience that most everyone goes through at some point in their lives—whether from a school, a job, a person or a team. Some people give up on their dreams when they are knocked off their feet by the crushing blow of the word “No.” Some people get defeated and are afraid to try again.

WILTON — As local fire departments see a drop in volunteers, Wilton Fire Department Chief Scott Bracket has actually been fortunate to see two to three volunteers joining each month. They now have about 70 members.
