Athlete of the Week: Cassidy Hayner

Photos provided.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Cassidy Hayner, a 17-yearold senior at Saratoga Central Catholic, just finished her final high school softball season. She transferred to Saratoga Central Catholic from Saratoga Spring High School in her junior year. This season was also her first time playing varsity basketball because she wanted to try something new.

“The class sizes at Spa Catholic were smaller so it was better academically for me to succeed there and the softball team was very welcoming when I transferred over,” Hayner explained.

Hayner has been playing softball since she was six-year-old and has been playing on the varsity team, under Brett Simpson’s coaching, since her school transfer.

“My dad has always played softball since he was very young, and he played for the Army for fast and slow pitch, so he taught me everything and got me into it,” she said.

Hayner is a catcher and fell into that position after being a utility player.

“When I was younger and playing in the t-ball and recreation leagues, I was a utility player and then when I started playing travel softball over the summer and over the winter, one of my coaches put me behind the plate and it just clicked with me. I know the game very well because of my dad and my whole family. We watch baseball and softball, so I knew the game and I was able to take lead as a catcher,” Hayner said.

The Yankees are her favorite baseball team.

Academically speaking, Hayner is doing, “pretty well.”

She has been on high honor roll this year and is a member of the National Honor Society. She will be going to King State College in the fall where she is considering studying athletic training.

“I don’t think I’m going to play softball my freshmen year, but I may try for my sophomore year. A lot of people are telling me that I should play because I would be a good player for their team, but I think I want to start my academics first,” she said.

This softball season, Hayner was named a Section II All-Star League player and made First Team in the Wasaren League. She found out after her final game from her coach, Brett Simpson.

“At the end of my last high school game, I was kind of emotional, and coach Simpson announced it. He said, ‘we want to congratulate Cassidy for being the first pick all-star for the Wasaren League,” so I was the runner up for MVP, which was really exciting for me,” she explained.

Over the summer, Hayner is a camp counselor at the Greenfield Summer Recreation Camp, she also works as a cashier part-time, and is a Youth Minister at St. Peter’s Church in Saratoga Springs.

“My mom has been my biggest supporter and my sister Kelsey, because they were always there for me at my games, and also my dad too. They were always supporting me by sitting on the bleachers and I could always hear them cheering me on, calling out my name when I got good hits and I heard them clapping and taking pictures. They’ve always been there for all my games and tournaments on those long summer days,” Hayner said, citing her family has her biggest supporters.

“I’m definitely going to miss my teammates the most and although it’s a lot of hard work to be playing in the heat over the summer, but the team comradery and having girls to support you makes it all worth it,” she said.

Correction: In the first edition of this article, Hayner was inaccurately titled as Youth Minister at St. Peter's Church. She is actively involved with youth group.

Spa Catholic Goes to Disney

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In March, the varsity softball and baseball teams, coached by Brett Simpson and Alphonse Lambert, respectively, went on a week-long trip to Disney World in Orlando, FL for a week of training and scrimmaging. This was the first year the softball team was able to attend, and the baseball team has gone several times in the past. Both teams do multiple fundraisers to attend from selling coupon books to 50/50 raffles.

“While the girls weren’t playing games or practicing, they were free to go to the parks and downtown Disney. Part of the package they get is a 5-day park and hopper pass, meaning they can go to any of the parks for 5 days. We are there for six full days, so the girls were in the parks every day or laying by the pool relaxing.
We took Easter Sunday off from playing and attended Easter mass, along with the boy’s program. This was something special for us to partake in Easter mass, as a whole,” Brett Simpson explained.

Simpson had plenty of thank you’s to disperse: “First to Brooke O’Reilly who without her we wouldn’t of been able to do this trip. She is awesome! To the parents who helped fundraise and help look over the players while in Disney. It’s awesome to not only play in Florida, but then to have multiple parents down there to watch and support the team makes it that much more special. To the School and our AD Alphonse Lambert for allowing us to make the trip and supporting us in this journey. And lastly, to the players who made our job easy while down there. They behaved well and played well. Seeing the smile on their faces every day made it that much more worth it. Thanks again to everyone else involved, can’t wait to be back next year.”

Athlete of the Week: Michael Halligan

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Michael Halligan, an 18-yearold senior at Saratoga Central Catholic High School has been Nordic skiing since he can remember. He cites his dad as his introduction to skiing.

“When I was born he put me on skis,” Halligan laughed, “as long as I can remember, I’ve always been on skis.”

Halligan just got back from the Junior Nationals Competition in Utah. In order to qualify, he had to ski two races in Rochester and two in Lake Placid.

“It was a pretty good season, I wasn’t really expecting to do that much better than I did last season. After the first couple races, I kind of just started getting into the groove of things and got progressively better. I’m really pleased with how all of it turned out. It was really something that I’m never going to forget. That was one of the best experiences that I’m ever going to have. Just going to Utah and skiing with such a good team and also racing with different competitors, I couldn’t really ask for anything better. Getting there was really hard, but it was definitely worth it,” Halligan explained.

Halligan’s aforementioned father, Sean, is his Nordic coach at Spa Catholic, and his brother is his club coach.

“Both of them together really paved the pathway for me to do the best I can, and I can’t thank them enough,” Halligan said.

Halligan was satisfied with his results in Utah.

“My outcomes in Utah were okay,” he laughed, “I didn’t really expect to do that well considering the fact that I was skiing against some of the top athletes in the country, but I was definitely toward the bottom of the list. I am pretty happy with my results though, I didn’t come in last in any of the races so that’s good.”

Aside from skiing, Halligan also runs cross-country in the fall and track in the spring. Halligan transferred to Spa Catholic in seventh grade after being a Maple Avenue student. He is an honor roll student with grades in the high nineties, and enjoys his creative writing class the most.

“I just recently put my down payment on St. Michael’s College and I will be skiing for them, they’re a Division II school,” he explained.

He intends to major in Digital Media and Journalism.

“I’m really into making music, too. I play bass, and I’m really into audio production. I helped a couple friends out with making songs for them. It’s a side hobby,” Halligan said, explaining how he spends his free-time.

Halligan is also a part of Peer Ministry, a religious community service club that runs retreats for the lower classmen to spread the Christian value.

“We really like to help out the community as much as possible, our school community but also the Saratoga community as a whole,” he explained.

Halligan will be wrapping up his Nordic season on March 16 – 18 in the Eastern High School Championships, taking place in Maine.

“I think that’s going to be really good. The altitude [in Utah] took a lot out of me during Junior Nationals so I feel like in Maine, I’m going to have way better results. I’m really excited about it,” he said.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Ken Mantia, head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Saratoga Central Catholic for the last decade, has an interesting season ahead of him now. On Martin Luther King weekend in back- to-back games, senior captain Ryan McFadden, the teams’ top defender, suffered a torn MCL knee injury in the game versus Hoosick Falls. The next day, senior captain Tyler Haraden, the teams’ top scorer with at least 21 points per game, broke his foot. Both injuries have, essentially, ended Haraden and McFadden’s high school basketball careers.

“Haraden looks like he’s out for the season, there’s a small chance that he could get back by sectionals. So now, all of a sudden, we’re down two starters, so other kids have really stepped up and they’re doing a great job,” Mantia clarified.

Since the injuries, other team members have stepped up and the team has seen significant role changes, effectively adopting the “next man up” mentality. The “next man up” mentality is, basically, the opportunity for the players who normally don’t have the opportunity to step up and into the shoes of their injured teammates.

“It really gives kids an opportunity to shine, and they’ve been really relishing that,” Mantia said.

Stepping into McFadden’s shoes is senior Ben Scammell, a shooting guard, and appropriately stepping into Haraden’s shoes is his brother, Sam Haraden, also a senior and power forward.

“[Scammell] has kind of stepped into Ryan’s spot and he’s been doing a great job. He’s got a couple of games where he had three three-pointers and Sam Haraden has been doing a really good job defensively for us,” Mantia said.

Other key players who have stepped up are Terel Tillman, a junior point-guard who was an all-league player as a sophomore and has been a starter since sophomore year; Sean Englert, a senior center; and Aiden Dagostino, a sophomore shooting guard.

“The load is kind of with those three guys and then the other two kids, Scammell and Haraden, are stepping in and doing their part,” Mantia explained.

“The kids that have been hurt, they’re still on the bench, rooting the kids on. They’ve had great attitudes, so it’s been good to see. We’re playing well, just taking it one game at a time,” he said.

As of Jan. 31, no games have been lost since the injuries.

McFadden and Haraden were “obviously disappointed by the injuries because they’re seniors. I mean, it’d be one thing if they could re-group and come back next season but when we’re in the middle of a really good year, we’re 14-2 now, we’re ranked in the state, and all of a sudden, their careers are over, it’s very tough. But they’ve been coming to practice, supporting the team, sitting on the bench at the games, their attitudes have been outstanding,” Mantia commended.

While the injuries were devastating to the entire team, they may have ironically helped to switch things up.

“It’s funny because now it’s hard to guard us, because you don’t know who it’s going to be. Tyler was a great player, and the opposing team used their whole defense to stop him,” he explained.

Injuries aside, the Spa Catholic boys have had a tremendous season and are taking it one game at a time to maintain that.

“We’ve done a lot of great things, it’s been a tremendous year. So we’d like to keep going as far as we can. I’ve seen seasons like this where guys will step up and you look back and it’s just amazing what kids can do when they get the chance to show off their skills,” Mantia said.

The Spa Catholic boys play again on Tuesday, Feb 6. For game details, check out the Sports at a Glance page.
