BALLSTON SPA — Ralph A. Mangino, Sr., 89, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Schenectady on June 12, 1932, to Albert and Adeline Mangino. He attended Nott Terrace High School and graduated in 1950. After graduation Ralph worked for a brief period at General Electric in Schenectady, until enlisting in the US Navy in 1951. He served for four years with two years of active duty in Port Lyautey, North Africa with the V6-7 Naval squadron and was honorably discharged in August of 1955.
Upon discharge, Ralph joined Sears & Roebuck as a salesman, and was co-owner of a Flying A Service Station and a used car lot in Schenectady. Having found his calling in sales, Ralph joined Salisbury Chevrolet in 1959 where he advanced to Vice President of Sales. In 1978, he and his wife Mary purchased Ballston Motor Sales which operates today as Mangino Buick-GMC in Ballston Spa. In 2004 the family added the Mangino Chevrolet franchise in Amsterdam. Both dealerships have attained Best In Class status and are a testament to the dedication and hard work of Ralph and the family members involved in the businesses.
Ralph was an active member of the VFW and the Ballston Spa Lions Club and was a generous patron of his community. Ralph enjoyed boating and fishing, but his real passion was golf. He was privileged to play many of the British Open courses including St. Andrews, Carnoustie, Royal Troon, Lytham-St. Annes, Royal St Georges, Royal Birkdale, Prestwick, Hillside and others in Scotland and England. Ralph was a member of the Ballston Spa Country Club for more than 50 years. His proudest moments were watching his children and grandchildren grow up to be caring and responsible adults, who cherish spending time with family.
