SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sora Friedman, nee Susan Polin, passed away peacefully at home on February 10 at the age 68, surrounded by her loving family.
Born August 27, 1945 in Mt. Vernon, she was the eldest of two daughters born to William and Eva Polin. She studied psychology and fine arts first at the University of Miami then at Farleigh Dickinson University where she received her degree. She also completed some graduate work in sociology and discovered her passion for creating ceramic works of art while at Syracuse University.
Most of her adult life was spent as a single mother raising four devoted children, all of whom survive her: Lisa Blumetti (the wicked child) of Miami Beach, Floirda, Jeff Blumetti (the simple child) of Fayetteville, Santino Blumetti (the wise child) of Laguna Beach, California and Isaiah Friedman (the child unable to inquire) of Wilton. She is also survived by five awesome grandchildren, all of whom she adored: Bonnie, Max, Emma, William and Marcus. Additionally, she is survived by a sister, Joan Polin, of Braintree, Massachusetts.
She first came to Saratoga in the summer of 1979, settling in Wilton soon after. Her creative spirit and love of pottery were the driving forces behind her first home business, Dragonworks.
She later ventured into real estate and opened her own office, OMO Realty. Always energetic and fiercely independent, she was a sweet anomaly in today’s hi-tech world. She never used a cell phone and no one could convince her that a microwave was more practical than the top of a woodstove!
A true artist, she loved any activity that allowed her to create and explore, whether in the kitchen, the studio, or the garden. She would travel for hours to deliver homemade chicken soup to a sick friend or relative then present a home grown bouquet of flowers that would put the finest florist to shame. She would selflessly offer optimistic and encouraging words to those in need, though never accept them herself. Her dedication and commitment to friends and family were beyond reproach, as her journey in life was never about superficial experiences. She gave immensely and made an impact that was felt by all who knew and loved her. Her openness of thought, strength of spirit and will, and steadfast conviction were characteristics admired by so many, as they are traits possessed by so few. She was loved for so many reasons and will be dearly missed by all. She has been taken from this world, but her spirit and memory will remain and be passed on as she smiles down upon us. Her family would like to thank Dr. John Stoutenburg, his staff, all the nurses and aides in the oncology ward at Glens Falls Hospital and the Hospice community of Saratoga for their hard work and dedication. In lieu of flowers, please plant something beautiful in Sora’s memory. In honor and celebration of her life, shiva will be held at her home from 4-6 pm on Wednesday, February 12.
