The final Monday of May is upon us and that means most Americans will be celebrating Memorial Day. Not to be confused with Veterans’ Day, Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the armed forces.
While most of us will enjoy an extra day off and roast some hotdogs on the grill, I urge everyone to embrace the true meaning of this holiday and honor our fallen heroes; not by mourning them, but by praising them. Praise them for their sacrifice and commitment to a set of ideals that sets them apart from the rest of the pack. Praise them for laying down their lives so that we could live free. Praise them for taking a stand against evil, and holding the line against Nazism, Communism, and Radical Islam.
We are the home of the free because of the brave. To quote the great Thomas Jefferson, “I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.”
So as we head into the weekend, I wish everyone a beautiful Memorial Day and I leave you with this short list of simple ideas to make your holiday more meaningful:
• Start the day with the pledge of Allegiance.
• Play patriotic music for part of the day.
• Hang a new Americanflag on your front porch.
• Visit memorials.
•Visit Saratoga National Cemetery and place a few American flags onveterans’ graves at 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY 12871.
God Bless!
