SLAM DUNK! Kerry Flaherty Scores 1,000 Points

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kerry Flaherty, a senior at Saratoga Springs CSD, has been playing basketball since she was four-years-old and has been on varsity since the eighth grade. Her long-term dedication has paid off. She has officially scored 1,000 points, joining an elite club only a few have succeeded at. Flaherty only plays basketball, which she does yearround with AAU team Albany City Rock. She’s also a part of the Unified Basketball Team at Saratoga, which is a team of athletes and mentally disabled athletes who play a few games each spring. Flaherty’s friend got her involved last year. She is a shooting guard on the court and is committed to Holy Cross to play basketball on a fouryear full scholarship, but she is unsure what she’ll study for a major.

“I’ll just see what fits when I get there,” she said.

Flaherty’s father and older brother also play basketball.

She scored her 1,000 point on a foul shot against Colonie.

“It was a great accomplishment and I’ve been looking forward to it for a while, so I was happy to get it over with in the beginning of the season,” Flaherty explained. She says the varsity team consists of some of her best friends, “It’s really fun playing together,” she insists.

The team enjoys hanging out and getting food together off the court. In her free time, Flaherty enjoys hanging out with her friends, family, and relaxing.

“It was a great accomplishment and I’ve been looking forward to it for a while, so I was happy to get it over with in the beginning of the season,”

As far as academics go, she is also thriving.

“It’s good, senior year is definitely fun. I don’t take as many classes as previous years and I have more freedom, so I enjoy that,” she commented.

Flaherty credits her parents, Rich and Mary, as her biggest support system.

Skidmore Goes Smokeless

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skidmore College will be a smokefree and tobacco-free campus, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Smoking and tobacco use — as well as the use of all e-cigarettes and vaping devices — will be prohibited throughout all of Skidmore College property, including outdoor areas.

“The smoke-free and tobacco-free policy promotes a culture of wellness and provides the community with a healthy, respectful working and learning environment by limiting the potential exposure of students, faculty, staff and visitors to the effects of secondhand smoke and by reducing the risk of fires,” said Cerri Banks, dean of students and vice president for student affairs.

“In addition, the policy is in alignment with the College’s strategic goals which support health and wellness initiatives throughout our campus community,” Banks continued.

“We included e-cigarettes and vaping devices in the policy because nicotine in any form is highly addictive. Our health and wellness staff are trained to advise those who are interested in breaking the dependency on nicotine products,” Banks said.

To implement the new policy, Skidmore partnered with the Living Tobacco-Free Initiative, a program of the Health Promotion Center of Glens Falls Hospital that encourages community members to work together to fix the major health and economic implications of tobacco use by establishing social norms that support tobacco-free policies, assisting tobacco users to quit and preventing initiation of tobacco use. The program provided Skidmore with resources, as well as examples and information about planning, implementing and sustaining a tobacco-free campus policy.

“We are extremely impressed with how dedicated, thoughtful and thorough Skidmore has been through this whole process and are thankful to be a part of this initiative,” says Brandi Bishop, program coordinator for the Living Tobacco-Free Initiative at the Health Promotion Center of Glens Falls Hospital.

“Making this change and commitment to health makes a valuable statement about the College’s sense of duty to its students, faculty and staff,” said Wendy Walker, a registered nurse and prevention specialist in health promotion at Skidmore.

“While Skidmore is constantly challenging students, faculty and staff to learn, grow and thrive, it’s important to recognize that this value extends beyond intellectual wellness to our physical and psychological well-being,” Walker stated.

The College will host a campus-wide smoke-free launch event on Jan. 28, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the second floor of Case Center. Dean Banks will make remarks and representatives from Health Services and Peer Health Educators will be on hand to offer smoking cessation resources. There will also be music, refreshments, goodie bags, prizes, giveaways and raffles. The number of U.S. college and university campuses that are smoke-free or tobacco-free more than doubled between 2012 and 2017, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation (ANRF). According to ANRF’s most recent data as of Oct. 1, 2018, there are now at least 2,279 totally smoke-free campus sites. Of these, 1,910 are also 100 percent tobacco-free, 1,886 also prohibit e-cigarette use, 960 also prohibit hookah use, and 386 also prohibit smoking/vaping. Founded in 1903, Skidmore College is a highly selective private coeducational liberal arts college that prides itself on a core belief that Creative Thought Matters. About 2,500 students from 44 states and 67 countries and a faculty of 300 dedicated teacherscholars put academic theory and creative expression into practice — resulting in eclectic interdisciplinary courses of study, ranging from the humanities and arts and sciences to business and education. Skidmore consistently appears in national best colleges rankings and has been recognized as one of “America’s Most Entrepreneurial Colleges,” a “Best Value” school and a “Hidden Ivy.” The tree-lined 1,000-acre campus is located in Saratoga Springs, New York, about three hours from New York City, Boston
 and Montreal.

Safe Schools Update

SARATOGA SPRINGS —
At Monday night’s security forum, NYSIR made the recommendation to add one more SRO at Maple Avenue Middle School. One more for the entire district.

“This would mean that 6 of the 8 schools would be left defenseless if an active assailant presented on campus. The average police response time to nonpolice initiated calls in the city of Saratoga Springs is 7.7 minutes,” said the press release.

“I don’t carry a weapon here anymore, not allowed to, it would be against the law,” said Mark Leffler, who after 28 years with the Saratoga Springs Police Department joined the district staff in August.

“I feel that we are less safe now than we were.” John Catone, the city’s assistant police chief, also said the district’s schools were less safe without armed monitors.

For years the district employed former police officers as monitors who carried concealed weapons, but that practice was ended in the spring after district officials determined it was out of line with state law. The school board this fall voted against authorizing the monitors to again carry firearms.

“I think you are less safe now, because to me it was an overreaction to a problem that didn’t exist,” Catone said of disarming the grounds monitors. Asked about the assessment from Leffler and Catone that the schools are less safe now than when the monitors were armed, Patton said, "That’s their opinion.”

Athlete of the Week: Devin Crowe

43 A

Photos provided.

SARATOGA SPRINGS —  Devin Crowe, a 17-year-old senior at Saratoga Springs High School has been wrestling since the fifth grade.

“I got involved because my cousins were wrestling, and I just decided that I wanted to do it. A lot of the kids in the program made me decide to stick with it. Brant Robinson was wrestling at the same time and so we all just started together on modified and then we just kept going,” Crowe explained.

Crowe is a co-captain this year with Brant Robinson and Doug Cooper.

“I like being captain. I like showing the younger guys what is expected of you, how to carry yourself in school, and also how to help the team out when you need it. Maybe when you’re not necessarily supposed to win a match, you’ll still go out there and you’ll fight the entire match. Just don’t have a quitting attitude no matter what the situation is,” Crowe stated.

Crowe was also a captain on the football field where he plays right tackle and defensive end.

“Wrestling definitely helps me with a lot of balance and footwork and stuff like that. During the off season we’re lifting for football so that helps me get a lot stronger. The only thing it doesn’t help you with is getting bigger,” he laughed.

“You’re trying to be bigger for football and smaller for wrestling,” he explained.

43 B

Crowe manages it all by only focusing on one sport at a time. He isn’t mid-football and thinking about what weight he needs to be to wrestle.

“You just take it one sport at a time and go with it,” Crowe said. Crowe manages his wrestling weight, 182, by not eating constantly and not snacking as often. His favorite go-to snack when he can pig out is ice cream. So far this season, he is 8-2.

“Obviously with football, it doesn’t matter how you’re feeling for that individual day. You’ve got to get the whole team on the same page but when it comes to wrestling, you’ve got to get everyone just to have a goal. You have to have a goal in mind for every match and then if you can get everyone to think of that and put their best foot forward, that’s all you can ask them to do. Obviously, you want to win as a team, but you can’t always dictate what the other guys do,” Crowe said, stating the difference between football and wrestling season.

Crowe loves both sports but does have a preference for football, simply because, “you can eat as much as you want all the time,” he laughed.

He is considering playing football in college and is thinking of studying mechanical engineering. His “senioritis” hasn’t hit him yet, he’s averaging a 93 for the school year so far. His biggest support system is his parents, Mike and Cindy, and his grandpa, Dave Gougler.

To catch Crowe in action, check out Sports at a Glance game schedules on page 42.

Saratoga Blue Streaks Wrestling Preview

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kris West, varsity wrestling coach at Saratoga Spring High School, is starting his tenth season out strong. A former Blue Streak wrestler and 1994 grad himself, West is no novice to the Saratoga Springs wrestling history.

"I’ve got five guys who placed in the top four of sectionals who are returning for this year. We have Eric Griskowitz, a Section II runner up; Griffin Viviano, who was third in Section II last year; Devin Crowe was fourth in Section II; Brant Roinson, third in Section II; and Doug Cooper was fourth in Section II,” West said.

The varsity team this year is all ninth through twelfth grade, but team star Eric Griskowitz has been wrestling on varsity since the seventh grade.

"Eric’s been on our varsity team since the seventh grade, so he obviously has been around, he's a junior now. He's placed at sectionals three times, he's been in the finals twice. All those other guys I mentioned, they placed in sectionals for the first-time last year,” he said.

West believes that overall, the team is in good shape for the second half of the season.

"We always try and have them peak at the end of the season. Everything that we do now is just really working towards the end of the year and trying to get guys to place as high as they can in the sectionals tournament,” he explained.

Local All Star Moments

Saratoga Springs PBA Holiday Hockey Classic

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Saturday night the Saratoga Springs Police PBA and the Saratoga Springs Firefighters IAFF Local 343 took to the ice for this year's Holiday Hockey Classic. This year the teams collected new and unwrapped toys at admission that will go directly to the Franklin Community Center in Saratoga Springs. Prior to the game even starting, a large capacity crowd slowly filled the Weibel Ice Rink in Saratoga Springs with some reporting wait times of almost 30 minutes to get into the rink.

On the ice SSPD started the scoring quick with a late goal by SSFD heading into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead for the Finest. That would be the closet the game would be as SSPD skated to a 11-2 victory tying the series record at 1-1 against SSFD. The biggest news of the evening came off the ice with the donations of the toys. With a crowd that was close to capacity for the ice rink, hundreds of toys were donated throughout the evening. After the game was over with and the spectators left, what was left behind washundredsoftoysthatwillallgo to children within Saratoga Springs to give them a Christmas that every childdeserves.

Members of the Saratoga Springs Fire Department and Saratoga Springs Police Department will be delivering the toys collected to the Franklin Community Center on Thursday, December 6 at noon. The Franklin Community Center is located at 10 Franklin Street in Saratoga Springs.

Saratoga Gymnastics Seeking 18th Consecutive Section II Crown

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs High School gymnastics team opens their season on December 8 by traveling to Shaker High School for the annual Shaker Invitational. Saratoga is once again the team to beat in Section II gymnastics this season with a mix of veteran senior leadership as well as a strong contingent of underclassman. Saratoga is led by senior captains Laura Eberlein and Kate DellaRatta both of whom were state qualifiers last season in the vault and the uneven bars.

Sophomores Ava Dallas and Sophia Damiano return for Saratoga as well. Dallas was the Section II all- around champion last season and placed 13th in the all-around at the NYSPHSAA gymnastics meet. Damiano was the Section II all- around runner-up and placed 17th in the all-around at the state meet. Contributions are also expected from seniors Molly Russell and Emily Ward, sophomore Megan Wishart, freshman Sophia Sperling and 8th grader Olivia Allen.

Head Coach Deb Smarro, who is in her 13th year leading Saratoga gymnastics, and assistant coach Tiffany Hogben are excited to get the season underway as Saratoga is seeking their 18th consecutive Section II title. “The girls are working hard and are anxious to get the season started,” commented Coach Smarro. The team meet schedule is attached.
