Feeling the Excitement of the Saratoga 150

The Saratoga meet begins today and you’d had to have been hiding under a rock not to feel the excitement for this sesquicentennial season. We’re so lucky to be here to enjoy all of this. I hope all of you imbibe deeply into the essence of what this great milestone means.

So, it’s finally here.

Another season of racing at Saratoga Race Course, only this one is even more special because it is the 150th anniversary of Thoroughbred racing’s grandest venue. Here, social networking has more do to with hat size and credit limits than “Tweets” and “Likes,” and one victory for horse, handler or horse player can be the germ of a more-than-twice-told tale.

Ronnie Johnson Puts New Automobile in Victory Lane; McGrew Picks Up His Second Sportsman Victory

MALTA — What a difference a week makes—last Friday night Ronnie Johnson vacated the Albany Saratoga Speedway with a severely wrecked race car in the back of his car carrier. But when the Palmer’s Service Center sponsored 35-lap Modified feature event ended this time around, Johnson was celebrating in victory lane. It was an emotional win for Johnson and team.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — While three horses have been positively diagnosed with a potentially fatal virus in Vernon Downs Raceway, just west of Utica, and several of the horses at the race track recently raced at the Saratoga harness track, officials with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets say Saratoga should be fine for the 2013 racing season.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a three-day job fair at Saratoga Race Course for those interested in working at Saratoga during the 2013 meet, which will run for 40 days from July 19 through Labor Day, September 2.

2013 16th Annual SRA Invitational

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 16th annual Saratoga Invitations is set to host upwards of 1200 teams from the Northeast this Friday, April 26 to Sunday, April 28. After about 900 entries in 2012, the Invitational has continued to see growth, as it becomes more and more renowned as one of the fastest regattas available for competition.

  • New York State Police The New York State Police announced that it issued 5,576 tickets during this year’s St. Patrick’s Day enforcement initiative. The campaign began on Friday, March 15, and continued until Sunday, March 17. During the campaign, funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, State Police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and underage drinking and sales to minors detail. State Police also ticketed distracted drivers who use handheld electronic devices.
