It’s More than the Suds, Bud! - Fourth Annual Oktobeerfest this Saturday.

BALLSTON SPA— Come one, come all (if you are 21 or older, that is) to the Saratoga County Fairgrounds for the 4th incantation of the lederhosen invasion otherwise known as Oktobeerfest, taking place this Saturday, September 28, from 1p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The event has certainly grown in stature and size.

“We started out on our family farm in Charlton,” relates Garth Ellms, event director. “After two years, we needed to move it to the Malta Drive-In—which was great, but even that was out the door. We are very excited to move this event to the Saratoga County Fairgrounds because it will allow us to spread out create a great experience for the attendees.”

Over 25 breweries will be represented from around the world, with an emphasis on German and seasonal craft beers. New York State is well-represented, with offerings by regional favorites including Adirondack, Olde Saratoga and Brown’s among the 11 Empire State brews available. The international dream team of  foamy delights is highlighted by German all-stars Becks, Spaten and Dinkelacker.

But it’s not just beer. It’s the ambience and atmosphere, which includes several seasonal and traditional food purveyors. And, of course, a festive soundtrack.

“We were very lucky to lock in dSB Die Schlauberger, the nation’s hottest Oktoberfest band,” Ellms noted. “They are known for upbeat German tunes and a great mix of party songs with a German twist." If you want a respite from chicken dancing but still want to move and groove, local favorites the Refrigerators will also be plugged in and ready to rock your world. Also, accordionist/singer Herb Liebenhagen will be back to oom-pa-pa for the fourth consecutive year.

Admission tickets are $10; beer tickets are $5 and commemorative mugs will also be available. They range from $5 to10 depending on style. By the way, this is cash only for all items. As noted above, it is important that you bring a valid ID as this is strictly a 21 and over event. Also, growlers (beer containers) and outside alcohol are not permitted. The event’s website (www.oktobeerfestny.com) is worth a look as it contains great information on shuttle buses, taxi phone numbers and nearby lodging.

Of course, none of our readers drink and drive, because they want to insure that they enjoy a “guten tag” (good day). Have fun!
