SARATOGA SPRINGS — Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (KY), seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, and 13-time champion steeplechase trainer Jack Fisher comprise the National Museum of Racing’s 2021 Hall of Fame class. American Pharoah and Pletcher were elected in the contemporary category in their first year of eligibility, and Fisher was chosen by the Museum’s Steeplechase Review Committee, which meets once every four years. 

The class of 2021 will be enshrined along with the 2020 inductees – trainer Mark Casse, jockey Darrel McHargue, horses Tom Bowling and Wise Dan, and Pillars of the Turf Alice Headley Chandler, J. Keene Daingerfield, Jr., and George D. Widener, Jr. – on Friday, Aug 6., at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion in Saratoga Springs at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the Museum website at www.racingmuseum.org. An announcement regarding public attendance at the ceremony will be made at a later date.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will reopen to the public on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Museum has been closed since January for the installation of a new state-of-the-art Hall of Fame experience as well as multiple new and updated exhibitions. 

The Museum will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new signature 16-minute film, “What It Takes: Journey to the Hall of Fame,” will initially be shown at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. daily. Per New York State health policies, the Museum will open with a maximum of 24 visitors admitted every two hours. Enhanced safety protocols in response to the COVID-19 pandemic are in place. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets online at www.racingmuseum.org beginning Aug. 31. 

Along with the new signature film and interactive Hall of Fame experience, the Museum has made several other exciting new additions and updates. Some of those include: Race Day Gallery, Call the Race, The Jockey Club Gallery, the Paintings of Martin Stainforth, and others.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame is accepting applications for the 2020 Rodion Cantacuzene Scholarship, an annual award recognizing young leaders and volunteers throughout Saratoga County. 

The scholarship, awarded in a one-time amount of $1,000, will be presented in June to a high school senior from Saratoga County who has demonstrated a record of academic excellence and exemplary service to the community along with a strong interest in pursuing future studies in history and/or the arts. The entry deadline is May 15.

Mr. Cantacuzene served on the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Board of Trustees for 30 years and contributed to the Museum in various capacities. Mr. Cantacuzene, a stalwart supporter of thoroughbred racing, the arts and public service, passed away in 2016.

High school seniors interested in applying for the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Rodion Cantacuzene Scholarship are asked to submit an essay of no more than 500 words detailing their community service and the rewarding aspects of the service. Applicants should also describe how the subjects of art and/or history have influenced their educational pursuits.

CHARLOTTE, VT/SARATOGA SPRINGS — Magical World, a 9-year-old mare owned by Three Chimneys Farm, delivered a colt by stallion Gun Runner at 2:20 a.m. on Feb. 25 at Three Chimneys as part of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Foal Patrol Season 3. This is the first foal of the season delivered on Foal Patrol. Both the mare and foal are healthy and doing well.

Magical World, a daughter of Distorted Humor who has already sired Grade 1 winner Guarana and listed winner Magical Dance, delivered her Gun Runner colt 11 days after her expected foaling date of Feb. 14. There are six mares participating in Foal Patrol Season 3. Both New Money Honey (in foal to War Front at Indian Creek Farm) and Hall of Fame member Ashado (in foal to Frosted at Godolphin’s Gainsborough) are due any time. The other mares this season include Vaulcluse (in foal to War Front at Gainesway Farm), Alpine Sky (in foal to More Than Ready at Old Tavern Farm), and Emotional Kitten (in foal to Dialed In at Denali Stud). Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year, is also a participant this season.

Foal Patrol is a one-of-a-kind interactive web project. Season 3 features a collection of live cameras where people can view real-time streams of several mares and their foals and the stallion Frosted. Bird Town Delivers Filly

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Bird Town, a mare owned by Marylou Whitney and the recordholder for the fastest Kentucky Oaks of all time, delivered the seventh foal of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Foal Patrol project on May 3 at 2:10 a.m. at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky. The foal, a filly by Empire Maker, was a few days past her expected due date of April 26. Bird Town, a multiple Grade 1 winner during her racing career, and the foal are both in excellent health. The live feed of Bird Town and her foal can be viewed at www.foalpatrol.com. “It’s great to welcome Bird Town’s foal,” said Cathy Marino, director of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. “We want to thank Marylou Whitney and her husband, John Hendrickson, for allowing all of us fans the opportunity to get to know Bird Town as part of the Foal Patrol project. We look forward to seeing this filly develop and hopefully become a great racehorse like her mother,” Marino said. The final Foal Patrol mare scheduled to deliver is Arravale at Chanteclair Farm in Kentucky. Owned by Merriebelle Stable and in foal to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Arravale is expected to give birth around May 24. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jockey Wayne D. Wright, who won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in separate years and was America’s leading rider in 1934 and 1936, and the 19th century racehorse Tom Ochiltree, winner of the 1875 Preakness Stakes and numerous prestigious handicap events, have been elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame by the Museum’s Historic Review Committee. 

 

Wright and Tom Ochiltree join contemporary selections Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Ramon Dominguez and Steve Asmussen in the Hall of Fame Class of 2016. The Pillars of the Turf selections will be announced later this month. The induction ceremony takes place Friday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion. 

 

 

Along with his wins in the Triple Crown races, Wright won three races aboard Triple Crown winner War Admiral, including the Whitney Handicap and Jockey Club Gold Cup. He also won the Dwyer and Arlington Classic with Triple Crown winner Omaha. He rode a third Hall of Famer, Eight Thirty, to victory in the 1938 Flash Stakes. Wright also won the Travers Stakes (1937), Saratoga Cup (1935) and Saratoga Special (1945).
