SARATOGA SPRINGS/SCHUYLERVILLE — On Saturday March 7, Girl Scouts from 12 troops in the Saratoga-Schuylerville Service Unit held their annual EXPO and this theme this year was Women First. 

The Service Unit was rewarded a grant from the National Girls Collaborative Project to provide Limited Edition Matchbox cars created with Mercedes-Benz to commemorate Ewy Rosqvist’s 1962 Argentinian Road Rally record breaking victory.

Scouts at the Expo participated in activities to learn about women who were considered the first in their endeavor and broke down gender or social barriers.  Women who were featured included: Danica Patrick, Junko Tabei, Harriet Tubman, Katherine Johnson, Sally Ride, Katie Sowers, Ellen DeGeneres, Greta Thunberg, Ewy Rosqvist, Marie Curie, Shirley Muldowney.

SARATOGA COUNTY — Each year, the Girls Scouts of the Saratoga-Schuylerville Service Unit come together for a day of fun and learning. Taking place at the Geyser Road Elementary School on March 10, this event is held every year in honor of the anniversary of the founding of the first Girl Scouts troop by Juliette Gordon Lowe in Savannah, GA. The Girl Scouts have six different levels, broken down by grade: Daisy (K-1), Brownie (2-3), Junior (4-5), Cadette (6-8), Senior (9-10), and Ambassador (11-12).

The theme this year was “Girls and S.T.E.A.M.”

“This is the Year of the Girl in Girl Scouts and they’re promoting that word; G.I.R.L. which means Go getters, Innovators, Risk takers, and Leaders. So that’s what we’re promoting,” said Michelle Przedilecki, event coordinator of Saratoga-Schuylerville Service Unit and troop leader of #3278.

“We were looking at women in S.T.E.A.M. fields as inspirations for the girls, so each troop picked a different woman from the S.T.E.A.M. fields. Each troop would study one woman as an inspiration and then they would teach the other troops about that person. They would run a booth with that activity. The girls would take turns being the leaders and take their passports and go around to all the other booths and get their passports stamped and do the activities each troop had,” Przedilecki explained.

The Girl Scouts celebrate their 106th birthday this week. The Jamboree is an event that takes place every year as part of Girl Scout week, which is celebrated internationally.

STATEWIDE – The Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York celebrated the 2017 Women of Distinction honorees at an event on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the West Side Ballroom in Plattsburgh.

Women of Distinction is a nationwide program by Girl Scouts of the USA that recognizes the achievements of women.

SARATOGA COUNTY – The Girl Scouts of the Saratoga-Schuylerville Service Unit came together this past weekend for a day of fun and learning at the annual Jamboree.  Taking place at Geyser Road Elementary School on March 12, the event is held every year to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the first Girl Scouts troop by Juliette Gordon Lowe in Savannah, GA.  The theme of this year’s Saratoga Jamboree was “Countries from Around the World,” tasking each troop with picking a country and learning about its culture.  The troops then set up tables at the Jamboree with informational displays and activities related to their countries. 

According to Jamboree organizer Whitney Jobmann, the event is also an opportunity for scouts, young and old, to come together and have fun.  The Girl Scouts has six different levels, broken down by grade: Daisy (K-1), Brownie (2-3), Junior (4-5), Cadette (6-8), Senior (9-10) and Ambassador (11-12).  Jobmann said that 225 girls from 26 different local troops attended the Jamboree this past week.

“In addition to the Girl Scouts,” Jobmann said.  “Are… the troop leaders and adult members of the troop [who] do a great job of supporting and encouraging the girls.”

WILTON — A late night fire on Monday, October 28, which may have suspicious origins closed down the Saratoga Regional YMCA’s Wilton branch building on Old Gick Road.  

There were no injuries reported from the fire, which was reported to begin about 10 p.m. The branch was open at the time and a total of about a dozen members and staff were evacuated without incident.

The building affected by the fire was the oldest at the Wilton complex, which led to a complete closure of the branch on Tuesday. 

However, the tennis court building and additional facilities which were part of a $7.5 million expansion of the branch were reopened the next day. 

At the scene, Greenfield Fire Chief John Lant was quoted as calling the fire” very, very suspicious,” saying that State Police dog had found something at the site that is being investigated as a possible accelerant.
