What Do You Do When Your Mother Was a Backup Vocalist for Sister Rosetta Tharpe? Live at Caffe Lena Feb. 23

“It’s a rare thing to share the stage with great talent like that young lady,” said B.B. King of Alexis P. Suter.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — What do you do when your mother was a backup vocalist for Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Harry Belafonte, Mavis Staples and Dionne Warwick? The answer: You grow up to be an award-winning blues, gospel, and rock vocalist.

Alexis P. Suter, with a repertoire that ranges from old-time Delta blues to vintage soul leads her band to the Caffe Lena stage for a show at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23.

Suter first burst on to the music scene as a regular performer at Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Rambles in Woodstock.

“She is one of those wonderful spirits, she’s got her arms around you; you can feel that,” Helm said. Suter and her band opened for Helm nearly 100 times at the Beacon Theater, Bethel Woods Center For The Arts, The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, N.J. and Central Park’s Summerstage.
