A Commitment to Democracy

As a lifelong Democrat and former chair of the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee, I am dismayed by the tactics being used by Democrats in this year’s city elections. In mailings and lawn signs Democratic candidates are suggesting falsely that democracy in Saratoga will be threatened if Republicans win city council seats. This tactic is offensive and divisive. Nearly half the registered voters in Saratoga Springs are Republicans. They are our neighbors and our friends. Many of the candidates have lived in Saratoga all their lives and have served the city in many capacities including elected office. The Democratic candidates should address the local issues where they may legitimately disagree with the Republicans. A commitment to democracy is not one of those.

Copy of New York-Bred Colt, Senbei Gets His Start at Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two-year-old Senbei took first in the Maiden Special Weight on Sunday, July 18 at Saratoga Race Course, winning the first race he has ever been entered in.

Senbei, foaled by Sweet Aloha and sired by Candy Ride (ARG), went off at 5-1 in the race with a purse of $85,000. Senbei went wire-to-wire to win that 5th race, finishing ahead of Gimmedamoney and Jugglerrunning. His time was the best that day for 5 ½ furlong races.

The Maiden Special Weight at Saratoga Race Course is open to two-year-old horses who have never won a race. As, a general rule the youngest and best-bred horses are entered in Maiden Special Weight races. Senbei was bred and raised by veterinarian Dr. Jerry Bilinski of Waldorf Farms in Valatie, NY. He is co-owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Bilinski and his wife Darlene. Senbei was ridden by jockey Manuel Franco and is trained by Christopher Clement.

“Senbei has a great personality, and he is full of himself,” laughed Bliniski. “He reared up on the track just like the Lone Ranger’s horse, Silver.”

Waldorf Farms is a full-service equine breeding farm that is also home to winning thoroughbreds Bustin Stones and Mr. Monomoy.

Bilinski bred his first horse in 1974 and dedicated his career to equine medicine. Bilinski, who was raised in Mechanicville, went to Cornell University for undergrad, and then on to become a veterinarian. After school, he found himself back in the area.

“I love being here where I know people, coming back to my roots,” said Bilinski. “And I am fortunate that Darlene has the same passion for horses.”

Bilinski was also on the Board of Trustees at Cornell for 17 years and the Director of Veterinary Services at the Columbia-Green Humane Society/SPCA.

“It has been gratifying to help animals in need,” said Bilinski said about his career.

As far as Senbei, his next race will be an upcoming NY Stallion Stakes at Saratoga Race Course this summer. So, get ready to place your bets on Senbei very soon!

Live Online Talk May 4 with Artist Paul Akira Miyamoto

LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George Arts Project’s Courthouse Gallery presents GO HOME, a solo exhibition of work by Paul Akira Miyamoto. In place of an on-site gallery reception, LGAP will host a Live Online Talk with Paul Akira Miyamoto 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 4. A direct link to the discussion will be posted at www.lakegeorgearts.org on the day of the event.

Miyamoto’s grandparents came to the United States from Kumamoto, Japan, and worked as itinerant farmers throughout the central coast of California and the desert of the Imperial Valley. During WWII they, along with Paul’s parents and oldest sibling, were sent to Poston Camp in Arizona. The internment of naturalized citizens as well as Americans of Japanese descent, from 1941 to 1946, informs much of Paul’s work of late.  The figures in his paintings recall the Issei, a term used for first generation Japanese Americans who emigrated from Japan, but were not eligible for U.S. citizenship. The distilled forms of field workers, often placed in landscapes drawn from his own memory, portray the strength and endurance of past family members, but could easily represent present-day immigrant farmworkers.

You can learn more about his work atpaulmiyamotoart.com.

The Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst St, Lake George. Regular Gallery hours may change due to COVID-19 public health concerns and protocols. For updates call 518-323-5499 or  email laura@lakegeorgarts.org or visit www.lakegeorgearts.org.
