Celebrating New Year’s Around the World 🙂

10 a.m. – Noon | This 2-part program will help children to prepare for a year of gratitude as well as learn how other cultures celebrate the New Year. We will decorate a Gratitude Jar to take home. Every day  you are encouraged to write down one good thing that happened that day and place it in the jar; at the end of the year, look back and recall the good that happened! Crafting for a Cause

The constant, inescapable refrain about the happiness of the season reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. Broken or lost relationships, employment and financial insecurity, poor health, depression–all of these can be more difficult as the nights lengthen and the cold intrudes. Recognizing that Christ came to comfort those who struggle with sadness and pain, First Presbyterian Church will host a community service of scripture, prayer, music, and candle lighting to invite God’s Word to shine light into our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church background (or no religious affiliation) is welcome.

Legacy of Excellence: Thoroughbred Racing in Saratoga Springs 1956 to 2008 

National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, 191 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs | Noon. Renowned author and racing historian Michael Veitch will discuss his new book Legacy of Excellence: Thoroughbred Racing in Saratoga Springs 1956 to 2008. Veitch will bring to life the stories of the on-track excellence of Saratoga racing during this period and the politics involved in the New York Racing Association’s franchise oversight of the track. Tiffany Treasures of the Albany Rural Cemetery

Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting 🙂

The village will become a winter wonderland. Following the parade, Mr. and Mrs. Claus will arrive on the back of an Eagle-Matt Lee Fire Company truck to light the tree in Wiswall Park. The parade will spotlight the Toys for Tots campaign, in partnership with the Ballston Spa Community Emergency Corps, Saratoga County Sheriff Department and the U.S. Marine Corps. Volunteers from these organizations will be on hand to collect donations of new, unwrapped toys from spectators along the parade route as well as at the tree lighting.

Our goal this year is to bring back tradition, while integrating elements that worked in recent years. We are planning to close down Broadway on December 1 from 6 – 9 p.m. for our Tree Lighting Ceremony. We are so thrilled to have Madison Vandenburg as our headliner on stage. And of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in the cottage. There will be other live music downtown and performers strolling Broadway and so many other surprises not only on December 1, but throughout the weekend.

More Saratoga County Stories Book Release

Join Chris Carola, freelance writer and former reporter with the Associated Press in Albany as he tells the stories of some of the many residents of Saratoga Springs and nearby communities who served in the military during World War II. Using Saratogian newspaper clippings compiled by a WWII veteran, archival material, wartime photographs and his own interviews with WWII veterans. Carola will talk about how Saratogians served with every branch of the U.S. military and saw action in every theater of the conflict, with special emphasis on families who had multiple members serving in uniform at the same time.
