Alzheimer’s Caregiver Conference

Serving Saratoga: Conversations with Community Leaders 

Caffe Lena, 47 Phila Street, Saratoga Springs | 4 – 5 p.m. Each month Caffè Lena executive director Sarah Craig interviews a leader from Saratoga’s social impact sector. Serving Saratoga happens monthly on the last Tuesday, starting with a 30-minute conversation with a nonprofit leader followed by an informal half hour gathering where nonprofit workers and volunteers can swap news and ideas. How Nathaniel Bacheller Changed History 🙂

The Play That Goes Wrong 🙂

7 p.m. | Performances also on November 18 at 7 p.m. and a matinee on November 18 at 1 p.m. Featuring over 50 high school students on the stage and behind the scenes; together, these students bring this show to its feet. Co-written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, “The Play That Goes Wrong” is a riotous comedy about the theatre. The play introduces the ‘Cornley University Drama Society’ who are attempting to put on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong…does! 1 p.m. | “At the Crossroads of Faith and Community.” Michael Diana, Historian and Director of Education for the Schenectady County Historical Society will present the program. For many Americans, religion is a critical part of their identity. Schenectady (and Saratoga County) are home to a remarkable variety of religious traditions. Michael looks at these faiths through a social lens, focusing on the human interactions that sustain them and while these many faiths might appear different on the surface, he will show their overarching similarities. The Town of Greenfield Historical Society Meeting

Film Discussion: Resistance

Zoom Program | 7 p.m. Sponsored by Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, a discussion of the film Resistance, a 2020 film written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, an Argentinian writer and director of Polish Jewish descent. Those who know about Marcel Marceau as one of the world’s most famous mimes, might not know about his involvement in the French Resistance that saved thousands of Jewish orphans. The son of a kosher Jewish butcher, who discourages his son’s artistic dreams, Marcel matures from a self-involved brat into a courageous rebel who protects the orphaned children by using his talents for something more important that his own career ambitions. Native Language Workshop: Abenaki 🙂

Saratoga Springs History Museum, Canfield Casino, Congress Park on Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 1–2:30 p.m.

Led by Jesse Bowman Bruchac, Language Director at Ndakinna Education Center and, like his brother James, a citizen of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation. This transformative program introduces foundational intricacies of Algonquian languages alongside original songs written to enhance accessibility and memorability. Participants will also learn how our perceptions of self and the surrounding world are molded by linguistic constructs. The fee for both workshops is $10 for History Museum Members, and $15 for non-Members, available at saratogahistory.org/events. Events take place on the History Museum’s second floor, which is only accessible by stairs.

Galway Preservation Society Meeting

Galway Town Hall, 5910 Sacandaga Rd, Galway | 7 p.m. 

The November meeting is the second Monday of the month due to voting set up at the Town Hall.  Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. The November program will be given by John Greenwood on the history of Hall’s Brookside Dairy in Greenfield Center.  The dairy began in the early 1900’s with two cows and two horses, growing into a much larger dairy operation.  Hall’s Dairy processed and bottled their own milk in addition to the milk from several other small farms, employed 10 men and operated five delivery milk trucks.  Our programs are always open to the public, free of charge.  If you choose, annual family or household membership is available for $10 per year.  Please join us to learn more about the history of Hall’s Brookside Dairy.

Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War

Between 1776 and 1783, Britain hired more than thirty thousand German soldiers to fight in its war against the rebels in North America. Collectively known as Hessians, the soldiers as well as accompanying civilians produced a large volume of records that provide detailed accounts of the American war, land, and people. Drawing from this rich material, the presentation will highlight some of the key experiences of these participants in a war on a distant continent against a people that had done them no harm. Messages From Survivors

Mechanicville District Public Library, 190 N. Main St., Mechanicville | 6 – 8 p.m. All are welcome. A powerful new exhibit about the Holocaust, survival, and resiliency to Mechanicville. In the exhibit, six short videos introduce the Holocaust through powerful personal stories of a family of Holocaust survivors. Six exhibit panels researched using the US Holocaust Memorial Museum’s resources provide historical context for the video footage. The exhibit covers the family’s experiences from 1938 through the 21st century.

Men and Women of Saratoga County Who Answered the Call in World War One

A Tale of Two Generals: The Later History of the Benedict Arnold Monument at Saratoga Battlefield

Less well known is General John Watts de Peyster, a resident of Dutchess County, New York, who paid for a special inscription to be added to the Arnold Monument on the battlefield. Join us to hear the colorful tale of this eccentric and scandalous nineteenth-century New York personality, who, like Arnold, found himself at the receiving end of nearly everyone’s ire. Clarence Dart and the Tuskegee Airmen

Saratoga Springs History Museum, Canfield Casino, Congress Park, Saratoga Springs | 7 p.m. During World War II, Lt. Col. Clarence Dart served in the Tuskegee Airmen, a special group trained at the airfield near the famed Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. He was shot down twice, earning two Purple Hearts, and he received the Distinguished Flying Cross award. He passed away in 2012 and is buried in Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs. His son, Warren Dart, will present a history of the introduction of African Americans into the Army Air Corps, and the inspiring personal story of his father. STILLWATER FALL FESTIVAL

Saturday, Oct. 28, Noon – 4 p.m. Various locations in Stillwater. Held the last Saturday of October from 12 to 4 p.m. in the Village of Stillwater since 2012! Local nonprofits join together to give families a chance to walk through the Village while trick-or-treating and playing games for free! In 1903, Lucy Scribner purchased 82 Circular Street to establish the Young Women’s Industrial Club of Saratoga that became Skidmore College. Over time, the campus expanded to Union Avenue and the surrounding streets. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. The third annual Friends’ Saratoga Book Festival will run through October 15, bringing together more than 60 talented authors from near and far for a celebration of reading. The multi-day festival features big-stage presentations, intimate conversations, engaging workshops, a Literary Marketplace, Local Author Showcase, KidZone, and more. The main festival day is Saturday, October 14. All events are free except when noted. Drive-Up Voter Registration

Autumn Stroll: “Historic Fifth & Madison Avenues” 

Meet the northeast corner of Nelson and Fifth Avenues, Saratoga Springs |10:30 a.m. Tour these grand residential streets that are lined with a variety of Victorian and Craftsman style houses. This stroll highlights the architecture and historical development of this important neighborhood near the Saratoga Race Course. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Tours are limited to thirty and tickets should be purchased in advance. Saratoga Book Festival
