“Spa Complex” Summer Sunday Stroll 🙂

Linda Harvey will lead a tour of the Spa Complex in the Saratoga Spa State Park, a National Historic Landmark. Between 1932-1936, multiple buildings were constructed – the Hall of Springs, Simon Baruch Administration and Research Center, the Roosevelt Bath Houses, Victoria Pool, the Gideon Putnam Hotel, and a bottling plant. The construction also included a comprehensive landscape plan. Annual 4-H Market Auction

Noon | This year there are 9 youth selling lambs, turkeys, and chickens in the auction. Community members and local businesses are invited to come bid at the auction. Grand, Gilded & Glorious: A Saratoga Stroll 🙂

This summer, visitors and residents alike can experience stories of the Spa City in the Gilded Age on a newly updated 90-minute guided walking tour presented by the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center and the Saratoga Springs History Museum. Led by experienced, knowledgeable guides, this tour takes participants from the historic Visitor Center through Congress Park and concludes with a full tour of the elegant 19th-century Canfield Casino. America’s Turning Point Presents: Revolution on the Hudson 🙂

Freezing Fruits & Vegetables: Hacks to Ensure Quality

3 – 6 p.m. | Freezing is one of the easiest and least time-consuming methods of food preservation. Most foods retain their natural color, flavor, and texture better than when other methods of food preservation are used. Greenridge Cemetery: History and Symbolism

Dramatic Presentation “Katrina Trask’s Legacy”

Homestead: You Are Here – Opening Night

Saratoga Arts, 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 5 – 7 p.m. Multi-disciplinary artist Yuko Edwards’ on-going series Homestead: You Are Here will be on view in our Atrium Gallery this summer. The series began when the artist was a resident of Saratoga Springs and took solo walks throughout the inner-city. On those walks, Yuko saw reflections of her own family in the landscape, memories from the past as well as possible new futures. The photographic works raise questions of belonging and evoke the existence of the Black community and its energy. www.saratoga-arts.org.

Mei Fabulae Continuare – Opening Night

Saratoga Arts, 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 5 – 7 p.m. David Dew Bruner takes the viewer on a journey through a series of collages. He layers vibrantly colored recognizable imagery with abstract shapes and textures all serving to reflect the intensely personal story he has lived for the past year. This exhibition explores themes of darkness and fear but also hope and courage, and ultimately serves as a triumphant testament to Bruner’s continuing story. Genealogy and Local History – Heritage Hunters

1 p.m. | The new documentary film, Bacon Hill, a Forgotten Crossroads, will be shown. Jim Richmond historian and volunteer at the Saratoga County History Center will be on hand for discussion. He and videographer David Waite produced the film. It is the second in the Center’s video series of 19th and 20th century communities and the people who lived there. Congress Park History Tour 🙂

Our experienced guides will tell you the stories of how Saratoga became “The Queen of Spas” in the 19th Century. The tragic story behind the Trask Family and the Spirit of Life statue.

The history of the Saratoga City Museum and its notorious reputation as the highest rolling gambling casino in the US. How the city rallied to restore the historic Spit and Spat statues. 2023 History Center Historian’s Tours 🙂

Hillside Cemetery & Burnt Hills Baptist Church | 10 a.m. Ballston Town Historian Rick Reynolds will explain how the Town of Ballston is preserving its past in Hillside Cemetery and tell stories of those buried there. Each of the tour leaders are experienced historians with a depth of knowledge about their communities and the people who lived there. Tours are scheduled for 90 minutes and distances vary up to 1.5 miles. Registration must be made in advance at brooksidemuseum.org/events. A suggested donation of $10 per registration (individuals, couples, or families) will support the programs of the History Center and a not-for-profit organization chosen by the tour leaders. Specific directions and parking locations will be provided to registrants in advance of the tour dates.

The Orchard Project 2023 Arts Festival 🙂

Live Tinsmith Demonstration 🙂

Saratoga National Historical Park, 648 Route 32, Stillwater

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. | At the time of the Battles of Saratoga, the tinsmith was an important part of both community and military life. Tinsmiths created dozens of useful items like cups, bowls, candle molds, lanterns, tea canisters, and other containers. They also provided armies with needed items such as oil flasks, canteens, document cases, cooking kettles, and even canister shot for artillery. Learn about the process and see a sampling of the many civilian and military wares a tinsmith could make. The event will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Celebrating Sanctuary: Saratoga’s Thoroughbred Aftercare 🙂

One Room School House 🙂

10th Annual TUFF eNUFF Obstacle Course Challenge 🙂

Annual Memorial Day Parade 🙂

Honor the memory of those U. S. servicemen and servicewomen who have passed away.  The parade begins across from Carousel Village and continues with a pause for a ceremony at the Kayderosseras Creek bridge then continue along Milton Avenue to Front Street where the parade proceeds to the Civil War Monument, turning onto Low Street to Veterans Park. Hosted by the Village of Ballston Spa, Henry Cornell American Legion Post #234 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #358, the schedule includes the Placing of Wreaths, a rifle salute, Invocation, Memorial Day address. Remarks from Grand Marshal, a reading of the Gettysburg Address, Flag Raising at Veterans Park, TAPS, Closing Benediction, followed by a reception in Wiswall Park.

Genealogy and Local History

Heritage Hunters will meet on Saturday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St. in Schuylerville. Daniel Mazeau, of Beverwyck Archaeology, will speak about an excavation he and partner Aaron Gore did on the Cohen-Ketzer property located in Bethlehem. The property owners were anxious to know whether evidence could be found of an occupation by a Revolutionary War veteran. Beverwyck Archaeology is a Cultural Resource Management Firm. Introduction to Canning at Home

Online Zoom Program or in person, 50 West High St., Ballston Spa | 6 – 8 p.m. 

Learn when and how to use different canning methods including a boiling water bath canner and steam canner for high acid foods, and a pressure canner for low acid foods. Safely canning foods to avoid botulism food poisoning will be discussed. Canners, jars, lids, and other canning accessories will be displayed and discussed. Grant Cottage Strategic Plan Public Meeting

The Gideon Putnam Room, Saratoga Spa State Park | 6:30 p.m. 

The Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage Board of Trustees will discuss the plans for the future of Ulysses S. Grant Cottage State Historic Landmark. Mt. McGregor and Grant Cottage Historic Site have seen dramatic changes over the last 136 years since the Grant family lived here. We are now embarking on the next phase in that journey and want you to join us in crafting a new vision for the future of the Historic Site. We hope this plan will allow the Historic Site to reach its full potential and be an even more effective place for learning and inspiration.

A Call to Duty: Saratoga County Veterans in WW2

7 – 8:30 p.m. | Former Albany-based Associated Press reporter Christopher Carola tells the stories of the many Saratoga County residents who served in the military during the Second World War. Using local archives, wartime articles from The Saratogian and his own interviews with WWII veterans, Carola talks about the experiences of dozens of men and women who answered their nation’s call to duty. This talk is in-person and is free, though donations are always appreciated.
