John Mayer Tour Kicks off in Albany

ALBANY — John Mayer has announced concerts for his ‘Sob Rock’ Tour 2022 kick off Feb. 17 at the TU Center in Albany, and will run through April 28 in Chicago, Illinois. Produced by Live Nation, the tour features stops in New York at the new UBS Arena in Belmont Park as well as at Madison Square Garden.

Sob Rock is Mayer’s eighth studio album. Produced by John Mayer and Don Was, and recorded at Henson Studios in Los Angeles, the album marks Mayer’s first solo offering since 2017’s The Search for Everything. 

NYCB Hosts Workshop for Dancers with Disabilities

SARATOGA SPRINGS — New York City Ballet Dancers Meaghan Dutton-O’Hara and Davide Riccardo led an “Access Workshop” project July 17, 2021 at School of the Arts Studios, at the National Museum of Dance. Nacre Dance Group Offers Half and Full-Day Summer Dance Camps

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nacre Dance Group hosts a 2021 summer dance camp, August 2-6, with half-day or full-day options in Contemporary Dance or Classical Ballet for dancers ages 13-19 with dance experience.

The morning program (9 a.m. – noon) takes students from technique class to rehearsal challenging dancers to make connections between training and performance. Students will learn choreography by Nacre Dance Artists Beth Fecteau (Classical Ballet) and Danielle Selby (Contemporary Dance). Students will broaden their dance training, expand their dance knowledge and vocabulary.

The afternoon program (12:30-3:30 p.m.) will be devoted to the exploration of choreography as students explore their creative voice through a codified choreography curriculum created by Nacre faculty. While learning the building blocks of choreography students will successfully create a dance piece of their own. 

Nacre Dance Group’s Summer Dance Program will be held at the Creative Dance Arts Studios located at 2037 U.S. 9 in Round Lake, NY.  The cost is $175 (half-day) and $350 (full day).  For more information and to register, visit nacredance.org/summer-dance or phone 518-817-3833. 

This Weekend: Caffè Lena at SPAC

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Caffè Lena at Saratoga Performing Arts Center presents two days of music on the Charles R. Wood Gazebo Stage featuring renowned performers from around the world. No reservations or tickets needed.

Performers include: The Lost Radio Rounders, The Sea The Sea, Jean Rohe Trio, The Rad Trads, The Kruger Brothers, and Kiran Ahluwalia Trio.

The free two-day music festival takes place noon-4 p.m. July 24-25. Doors open 11:30 a.m. 

Racing City Chorus Performs “Barbershop on Broadway” Downtown on Thursday Nights

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Racing City Chorus, with their A Cappella “Barbershop-style” singing, performs consecutive Thursday evenings on Broadway through Aug. 26. 

“The Chorus will be entertaining crowds from all walks of life who love to hear barbershop a cappella harmony being sung on Broadway,” says Racing City Chorus President Rusty Senecal. “One of the most rewarding things we do is sing to audiences and experience the positive responses it creates in youngsters and adults.” 

The Racing City Chorus is a men’s singing organization that meets regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun. They currently have over 25 singers from all walks of life and all parts of the Saratoga Springs/Capital Region. Tang Presents: Upbeat on the Roof Series Returns July 29

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Upbeat on the Roof returns for its twentieth season, presenting a vibrant and diverse range of regional musicians over four Thursday evenings from July 29 to Aug. 19. 

Concerts will be performed on the lawn outside the Tang Museum starting at 6 p.m. Visitors are welcome to bring chairs, blankets, food and drink, and set up as early as 5 p.m. This year’s lineup features:

• July 29 — Laveda: A genre-blending dream pop/rock group, Laveda is an Albany-based duo of Jake Brooks and Ali Genevich. Their acclaimed 2020 debut album What Happens After features dreamy lyrics and textural sounds that are thoughtful and danceable. Upbeat debut. www.lavedaband.com 

• Aug. 5 — Thomasina Winslow: Blues singer Thomasina Winslow’s snappy guitar chops and rich warm vocals has made her a staple of the Capital Region music scene. • Aug. 12 — Sun Is Poison: A lo-fi solo project of Ballston Spa’s Will Seifart, Sun is Poison creates immersive works that meld the mechanical sounds of drum machines and synths with banjos, guitars, and honest and poignant lyrics. Upbeat debut. sunispoison.bandcamp.com 

• Aug. 19 — Heavenly Echoes: Founded by the late Deacon James Edmonds out of the Sweet Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Albany, the group performs in the storied tradition of Southern-style gospel music with spirituals, hymns, traditional contemporary gospel, and originals. Heavenly Echoes last played Upbeat in 2016.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Bridges Annual Gala “The White Party” was held July 17, 2021 at Saratoga National Golf Club, on Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs. The event, attended by 400 guests, raised a record net amount of $125,000. 

New York City Ballet Dancers Return to Summer Home in Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS — An ensemble of New York City Ballet dancers graced the Saratoga Performing Arts Centerstage this week, presenting NYCB On and Off Stage, from July 14-17. 

Scheduled events featured insights and excerpts from iconic masterworks and story ballets like Apollo, Jewels, Firebird, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. The intimate, up-close look at selected excerpts from the company’s extraordinary repertory of ballets this year represents a uniquely educational and more scaled-down approach than in previous seasons, due to the ongoing health and safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and safety guidelines.

SPAC and New York City Ballet have both confirmed that the traditional residency engagement with the full NYCB company will be presented in 2022 from July 12-16. 

SPAC Hosts Educational Dance Workshops

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Performing Arts Center hosts children’s workshops with the New York City Ballet on the SPAC stage for the first time, on Tuesday, July 13, 2021. The program is part of a series of SPAC led dance workshops for children of all abilities in a partnership with the NYCB staged at a variety of venues this month.

Free Music In The Park: Old-School Reggae To Reverb-Driven Sounds Of Early Rock ‘n’ Roll

LAKE GEORGE — Lake George Arts Project’s Summer Concert Series showcases bands at Shepard Park in a series of free concerts on Wednesday nights in July and August. 

The party kicks off 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 21 at Shepard Park Amphitheater featuring Robanic with the Caribbean Sound. The range of Caribbean music includes old-school reggae, traditional rock-steady, ska, calypso, contemporary lovers rock, as well as the hottest new dance-hall sound from Jamaica. 

The Spirit of Johnny Cash Harold Ford, Our June & The Cash Band takes the stage Wednesday, July 28, then it’s  Alex Torres and His Latin Orchestra on Aug. 4, The Dylan Perrillo Orchestra Aug. 11, The Stony Creek Band Aug. 18, and Mark Gamsjager & The Lustre Kings on Aug. 25.
