GLENS FALLS —The Glens Falls Collaborative will be hosting its annual Wing Fest event from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 in Downtown Glens Falls. 

The event is a competition between restaurants for the best wings. Tasting is from noon to 3 p.m. and an awards ceremony at the bandstand in City Park at 3:30 p.m. will close out the event, with multiple categories of winners. There will also be live music in Downtown Glens Falls.

The 2nd annual Michael DuBray Inferno Wing Eating Competition takes place at 2 p.m. on Glen Street during Wing Fest. Competitors will pay a registration fee of $25 that will go into a Michael DuBray Scholarship Fund. The winner will receive a trophy and bragging rights. The contest honors Michael DuBray, also known as DeeJay DuBray, who helped found the event and served as its chair and champion for many years. Register at: www.glensfallscollaborative.com.

This event will be cash only; Participating Downtown restaurants will serve from their storefronts, and restaurants from outside the city will serve from locations along Glen, Ridge and Maple Streets. There will be entertainment in City Park.

Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Saratoga Recognizes One Year Mark of War in Ukraine with Donation

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Fred Astaire Dance Studios (FADS) co-owners have been personally affected by the war in Ukraine. Co-owner Grey Masko still has family and friends in the country.

In January, the Studio partnered with Dnipro Euro Deli in Latham to collect clothing and wares to help the people of Ukraine as they endure a harsh winter. As a result of the endeavor, 500 pounds of clothing were shipped to Ukraine.

The shipments were made over the course of a few weeks with the assistance of volunteers at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet. Items were delivered to an organization called My Home, who will help distribute the items to those who need them in Ukraine.

Registration for Saratoga Springs Little League Spring 2023 Now Open

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs Little League is a recreational baseball league for players ages 4 to 13 within the Saratoga Springs City School District, with games played at West Side Recreation Park.

The league offers several age levels: Tee-ball (ages 4-6), Bantam (ages 6-7), Minors AA (ages 7-8), Minors AAA (ages 9-10), and Majors (ages 11 and up).

Saratoga Springs Little League also offers a Challenger Division for ages 4 to 18. The Little League Challenger Program is Little League’s adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and developmental challenges.  The goal of this division is to provide the opportunity for the developmentally and/or physically disabled to enjoy the full benefits of little league participation in an environment structured to their abilities.

Registration for Saratoga Springs Little League closes on March 17. Player assessments for Minors, AAA, and Majors divisions will be held March 18.

Saratoga County Career Center Free March Virtual Workshops

BALLSTON SPA —The Saratoga County Career Center in conjunction with the Greater Capital Region Career Centers will hold the following free virtual career workshops in March:

March 8 at 10 a.m.: Goal Setting. This workshop explores how goal setting works, why goals are important, and provides helpful resources to get you started to reach your dreams. Facilitated by Washington and Albany.

March 14 at 10:30 a.m.: Interview Preparation. Learn how to articulate your strengths, what questions to expect, how to address difficult topics, and ace the interviewing process. Facilitated by Schenectady.

March 21 at 10 a.m.: Completing Job Applications. Statistics show approximately 50% of mid-sized companies and almost all large corporations use an applicant tracking system to screen candidates for job opportunities. Learn how to prepare your online application to get the most visibility from hiring managers. Facilitated by Warren and Washington.

March 23 at 1:30 p.m.: Social Media. Your social media presence can make or break your ability to find a job. Learn how to use social media to your advantage in searching for a job and marketing yourself to land the job or career you’ve always wanted. Facilitated by Schenectady.

March 28 at 10 a.m.: Overcoming Barriers. Join an informal discussion about how to overcome potential stumbling blocks to finding a job. Whether you’re facing transportation needs, childcare needs, prior justice system involvement, inexperience, health concerns or more, this workshop will provide you with resources and strategies to help you meet your goals. Facilitated by Saratoga and Fulton-Montgomery-Schoharie.

The Rotary Club ofSaratoga Springs: Call For Nominations for Annual Senior Citizen of the Year

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Rotary Club of Saratoga Springs is seeking nominations for recognizing the service contributions of a Saratoga County resident aged 65 or better with their annual Senior Citizen of the Year award.

Rotary International is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill.

The Rotary motto is Service Above Self. The Rotary Club of Saratoga Springs knows that there are many members of our community, particularly senior citizens, who live this philosophy every day. The Rotary Club encourages community members to nominate a deserving Saratoga County Senior for this award.  

Nominees must be:

• Demonstrate a commitment to community service

The 65+ members of the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club meet every Wednesday for fellowship, luncheon, and an informational program. These weekly gatherings are the launching point for the Club’s community service activities, including funding for local organizations and youth scholarships. The Club’s annual Home & Lifestyle Show is the major fundraiser. Other important activities include service events where club members help an organization accomplish a major clean-up or construction task, cultural exchange programs, and the provision of scholarships to local students. Saratoga Springs Rotary is part of a network of clubs in the upstate region (District 7190), which rolls up into Rotary International.

Saratoga County Resident Selected as Command Chief of the First Air Force

ALBANY — Schuylerville resident Command Chief Master Sgt. Denny Richardson, has been selected to serve as the command chief for the 15,000-member First Air Force.

Gov. Kathy Hochul made the announcement on Feb. 23. 

“Chief Richardson’s career epitomizes public service and I am proud to call him a fellow New Yorker,” Hochul said, in a statement. “His experience serving as a member of the country’s largest Air National Guard and the wise counsel he has provided to its commander have made him uniquely qualified for this job. The First Air Force and the nation will be well served with him in this critical role.”

Headquartered in Panama City, Florida, the First Air Force is responsible for aerospace control and air defense of continental United States and handles duties of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which is the joint Canadian-U.S. entity responsible for the air defense of North America.

A resident of Schuylerville, Saratoga County, Chief Richardson has served as the senior enlisted advisor to the commander of the 5,880-member New York Air National Guard since 2020. In this role, he advises the Air Guard’s Commander, Major General Denise Donnell, on issues such as enlisted training, readiness, and morale. 

Richardson served in the Air National Guard for 34 years, in Maryland before moving to New York. He will begin his new position in April, reporting to First Air Force Commander Lt. General Steven Nordhaus, and will serve as command chief for three years. 

Saratoga County History Center VP Appointed to Erie Canalway NHC Commission

BALLSTON SPA — Sean Kelleher, the vice president of the Saratoga County History Center, has been appointed to the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission. This federal commission works with communities along the Erie Canal to celebrate and promote the Canal’s heritage.

Kelleher directs communications and is a project director for special events at the History Center based in Ballston Spa. Kelleher is also the historian for the town of Saratoga and the vice chair of the Saratoga County 250th American Revolution Commission.

“The Erie Canal was one of the most significant factors in the development of upstate New York,” said Kelleher, in a statement. “As we approach the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal’s opening in 1825, we must have a commemoration involving all in the 500 miles across the corridor.”

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission is a 27-member, community–based federal commission appointed by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior that works with 234 communities along the Erie Canal route. They plan and direct activities that preserve and celebrate the historical, natural, scenic, and recreational resources of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. Kelleher’s appointment is for a three-year term. 

Under Development: Renovations at Longfellows, Redevelopment of Stewarts, SoBro Hotel Expansion

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Planning Board will host its next meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 at City Hall. 

Planning Board applications currently under consideration include:  

• Stewarts 177 S Broadway & 28 Lincoln – Initiation of Coordinated SEQRA Review of a proposed redevelopment of existing Stewart’s Shop, demolition of all existing site features and replacement of fuel tanks and canopy, and a new two-story 3,720 sq. ft. Stewart’s Shop.

•3368 South Broadway Hotel – Expansion Site Plan review for an addition to an existing hotel to incorporate 17 new rooms in the Gateway Commercial – Rural district. The expansion along the southern hall of the building would be a total of 2,942 square feet new footprint, according to documents filed with the city. Three parking spaces will also be added to the site of the project, which is titled Homewood Suites. 

• 500 Union Longfellows Renovations – Site plan review of a proposed redevelopment of the existing Longfellow’s hotel, restaurant and conference center in the Interlaken PUD. 

The project description calls for the demolition of the restaurant portion of the main building, while maintaining the existing hotel rooms on the building’s north side. Addition plans point to the development of a new building to connect to the existing block of hotel rooms and the construction of a connecting bridge. 

In specific numbers, plans call for the number of rooms to increase from 18 in the main building and 32 in the hotel wing, to 54 and 34, respectively, according to the most recently revised plans submitted to the city.

March 1: A Public Discussion on Homelessness and Mental Health In Saratoga County


Changing The Lens on Homelessness. 

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga County Citizens Committee for Mental Health (SCCCMH) and the Saratoga County Alliance to End Homelessness (SCAEH) have partnered to host “Changing the Lens on Homelessness: A public discussion on homelessness in Saratoga County.” 

The event will be held 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, at the Saratoga Springs City Center in Meeting Room 1. This program is free and open to the public.

Homelessness is a multi-faceted condition and to help people experiencing homelessness requires a multi-faceted understanding. The public discussion will expand this understanding and perhaps lead to strategies to consider or implement to end homelessness.

The following panel of experts will lead the discussion on homelessness in Saratoga County: Jenna Espey of RISE Housing and Support Services, Maggie Fronk of Wellspring, Kate Evanico of the Saratoga Hospital Mental Health Unit, Stephanie Romeo of Shelters of Saratoga, Dr. Michael Prezioso and Heather Wolfe of the Saratoga County Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services; Jennifer Myers from Unlimited Potential of Northern Rivers; Michael Moore – CAPTAIN Community Human Services; and Heather Crola – Healing Springs Recovery Community Center.
