Letters to the Editor – Racetrack Families and Chaplaincy Thankful for Local Support
SARATOGA SPRINGS — While racetracks, malls, and restaurants across the nation face steady declines, The Saratoga Racecourse continues to defy national trends, thriving as a bustling summertime hub in Saratoga County.
This vibrant season offers a unique backdrop for the Racetrack Chaplaincy of New York, which is currently celebrating 40 years of hope and devotion to the backstretch community.
Led by Nick Caras, director of the New York division, the chaplaincy operates on a foundational belief: everyone deserves care through every trial and success.
The organization translates this message of devotion into tangible, everyday relief for working families through a robust network of essential resources and recreational programs.
Summer Programs for Kids
Recognizing the intense demands placed on working families during the racing season, the chaplaincy coordinates full-day summer activities. Operating from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., these programs ensure children have a safe, engaging environment while their parents work.
The chaplaincy partners with several key local organizations to make these summer programs possible:
Afrim’s Sports, Beaver Cross in Greenwich, Sacandaga Bible Institute, The Saratoga and Ballston Spa Recreation Centers & The YMCA
Essential Community Support
Caras and his team work deeply within the community to distribute vital resources to those navigating financial or logistical hardships. Their core services include:
Family visit bus trips to keep loved ones connected across distances.
Paperwork assistance to help individuals successfully navigate complex forms.
Backpack giveaways to equip local children with the supplies they need for the school year.
