Saratoga Remembers:Upcoming Events Marking the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

While 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of one of America’s greatest triumph’s, the July 4,1776 Declaration of Independence, it also marks the 25th anniversary of one of its darkest days: the 9/11 attacks. 

On Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers from the terrorist organization Al-Queda took control over four commercial aircraft over the United States and crashed three into towers one and two of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. The fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after a passenger revolt.

The attacks killed 2,977 people, including two from Saratoga County — Don Jerome Kauth of Saratoga Springs and Diane Parsons of Malta. Thousands more would die from health impacts of working or living near the site of the attacks. 

Saratoga County will be holding several remembrances to mark this solemn day. Here is a list of where these will take place. 

Saratoga Springs 

Saratoga Springs will hold its annual remembrance at the 9/11 memorial in High Rock Park. The ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11.

In addition to the city ceremony, the Saratoga Wilton Elks Lodge 161 will hold a public ritual at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Ballston Spa

Ballston Spa will hold its annual remembrance outside the 9/11 memorial on Front Street at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Halfmoon 

The Town of Halfmoon will hold its annual Patriot Day ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Abele Park. 

Mechanicville 

The Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks and Mechanicville Fire Department will hold a ceremony and “Ringing of the Bell” Service at Central Station on Main Street at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery

The National Cemetery will toll the bell of the USS Saratoga at the time of the plane strikes on September 11 and hold two events on September 12. The first will be a cemetery clean up that will start at 10:00 a.m. with volunteers asked to meet at 9:30 a.m. Registration is required and can be done at http://carrytheload.org. 

The second event will be a memorial ceremony at 11:00 a.m.
