Saratoga Arms Celebrates 25 Years, Announces Discounts for Locals

SARATOGA SPRINGS —The Saratoga Arms Hotel celebrated its 25th year in business on Thursday night with a lavish party replete with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. At the event, General Manager Rachel Boggan unveiled a new marketing strategy designed to attract local residents.

“As a thank you to the community that has really made Saratoga such an amazing small city,” Boggan said, “we are launching a locals rate starting in January of 2024.”

The rate will apply to anyone who lives within 50 miles of downtown Saratoga. It’s available during the off-season and on select dates during the busy season. Bookings at this discounted rate will open next week.

Boggan announced that breakfast will soon be open to local reservations on select days. Some of the hotel’s signature morning dishes include cinnamon breakfast bread, lemon ricotta pancakes, and homemade buttermilk biscuits. A breakfast speaker series that will feature community leaders is also in the works.

“We’re thrilled to start our next 25 years with a focus on our community, and allowing our hotel guests to experience that community in the most immersive way possible,” Boggan said.

The building that houses the hotel was originally built in 1870 by Gideon Putnam’s grandson Loren. In February of 1999, it reopened as the Saratoga Arms after extensive renovations. Last month, the Saratoga Arms was ranked one of the best hotels in the Mid-Atlantic in the 2023 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

Adopt a Grandparent Campaign Will Give Christmas Presents to Seniors

SARATOGA SPRINGS —One down, just 349 to go. On Friday, a gift tag order was placed on the Impressions of Saratoga online store by someone in Staten Island. Word of the new “Adopt a Grandparent” campaign had apparently already reached the Big Apple.

The owners of Impressions of Saratoga and The Dark Horse Mercantile have launched a holiday gift-giving initiative for seniors. The “Adopt a Grandparent” campaign officially begins on November 24 and ends December 17. During that time, $20 gift tags can be purchased. Buyers can write their own personalized notes on the tags. Then those tags will be hung on trees at the two stores.

Come December 18, store co-owners Maddy Zanetti and Marianne Barker will use the proceeds from the tags to buy gifts for the residents of the Wesley Community’s Health Care Center. The hope is that 350 gift tags will be purchased, thus allowing Zanetti and Barker to give one gift to every Wesley resident.

“We can talk to the Wesley Community and see what the residents might actually use,” Zanetti said. The goal is to buy the seniors gifts that are both practical and will “make them all feel special during the holiday season,” according to Zanetti.

For Zanetti, Wesley has special significance in her life. “My great-grandmother lived there when I was little,” she said, “and my grandmother just recently passed away and she was there.”

The Wesley Community “empowers seniors to live independently with choices, confidence, and peace of mind” in the heart of Saratoga Springs, according to a company brochure.

Zanetti said that she and co-owner Barker’s families were fortunate because they could go visit their elders during the holidays. “But sometimes people don’t have a local family member,” she said.

Those interested in buying a gift tag can do so at either Impressions of Saratoga or The Dark Horse Mercantile on Broadway in downtown Saratoga. Non-locals can visit www.ImpressionsSaratoga.com to purchase a tag online. Orders can also be placed over the phone by calling 518-587-0666.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital’s 28th annual holiday ornament pays tribute to one of Saratoga’s most notable figures, Marylou Whitney.

Joseph Bell, M.D. designed the gold ornament, which is currently on sale for $25 at the hospital gift shop, Adirondack Trust branches, Impressions of Saratoga, Treasures Boutique, and Crafters Gallery. Proceeds will support the hospital’s Cancer Patient Fund.

In 2019, Whitney was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, just two weeks after she passed away at her home in Saratoga. Known as the “social queen of Saratoga,” Whitney was an influential presence in the Spa City, co-founding both the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) and the National Museum of Dance.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — As workers on cherry pickers adorned Broadway’s lamps with Christmas wreaths, the Salvation Army launched its annual Red Kettle campaign outside the Adirondack Trust main branch.

“The needs of our neighbors are present year-round, but most prevalently during the Christmas season,” said Salvation Army Lieutenant Michael Dow. “This is why the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign is so important to those looking for help in the coming weeks.”

The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs’ Christmas assistance program will benefit more than sixty local families, Dow said. The charity’s goal this season is to raise $100,000. The first $1,000 was donated by Adirondack Trust.

Contributions can be made online, at red kettles stationed in the city, or by texting “Saratoga” to 31333. This year, donations can also be made by tapping a phone or chip-enabled card on one of the dollar amounts attached to the red kettles.

Waterwheel Village Marks 100 Years in Business

GALWAY — Waterwheel Village, a country store that specializes in aged cheddar cheese, is marking its 100th year in business.

Part of the current store was first constructed in 1839 as a foundry that made horse-drawn plows, according to Waterwheel’s manager Laurie Klamp. Klamp has been working at the store for more than forty years and has become its unofficial historian.

A member of the Fonda family (for whom the village of Fonda is named) began aging cheddar cheese at the location a century ago. “And we’ve been doing it the same way ever since,” Klamp said.

In 1923, the property became a mercantile store. The Fonda family owned it until 1971. After a series of brief takeovers, the Marvin family bought Waterwheel and have owned it for the last 51 years.

The shop sells craft soda and beer, candy, and baked goods. But its most popular items are its aged cheddars. “We actually have people who come in once a week to buy a pound of it to make homemade macaroni and cheese,” Klamp said. “It is delicious.”

Waterwheel is located at 2259 Route 29 in Galway. The store currently takes phone orders and may soon begin online sales. To learn more, visit waterwheelvillage.com.

Office for Aging and Partners Bring Intergenerational Game Event to Saratoga County on November 17

SARATOGA SPRINGS —The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA), Ageless Innovation, and the Saratoga Senior Center are hosting a “Reach Out and Play” event, an intergenerational game day, at the Saratoga Senior Center on November 17 from 10:30 a.m. to Noon.

Game play is fun for all generations. But the real wins are overcoming social isolation (a leading public health concern), encouraging engagement for older adults, and getting generations together so they can learn from one another (and combat ageism in the process).

Participants will be playing recently released and re-imagined classic board games from Ageless Innovation in partnership with Hasbro Toys. These reimagined classics are designed with age-inclusive components, such as easy-to-grasp game pieces, increased font size, and trivia and references that cater to players of all ages.

The Saratoga Senior Center is located at 290 West Ave., Ste 1, Saratoga Springs (attached to the YMCA). For questions about the event or to RSVP, call 518-584-1621.
