SARATOGA SPRINGS — William W. Lohrer, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home last Friday morning, October 25, 2024. 

Known as Bill to family, friends and colleagues, he had been married to Jean (Gengenbach) for 69 years. In addition to Jean, he is survived by his five children: Bill of Belchertown, MA; Jean (Johnson) of Vienna, VA.; Robert of Los Gatos, CA; Jack of Alexandria, VA; and Pat (Lefebvre) of Ballston Spa. 

Bill attended New Utrecht High School and St. John’s University where he earned a B.A. and a master’s degree in history. He enjoyed many years playing high school and sandlot baseball at the Parade Grounds and Marine Park in Brooklyn. 

Bill was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He served in the 3rd Division and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and became the personnel administrative specialist and acting Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment.   

After military service Bill pursued a 40-year career in the field of education. This included teaching, serving as Dean of Students and as Assistant Principal. He most enjoyed teaching American history to junior high school students in Brooklyn. His teaching skills extended into the realm of sports where he guided young boys and his sons’ Little League teams in developing skills and sportsmanship. 

Bill married Jean A. Gengenbach of Brooklyn, New York on April 11, 1955. They lived in Franklin Square, Long Island for more than 30 years, raising their family there. In retirement, he relocated in 1992 to Saratoga Springs, New York. He became an avid golfer and delighted in playing in and around the Saratoga area. Jean and Bill spent many happy winters in Jupiter, Florida. 

His grandchildren are Drake, Blaize, Jacqueline and Hollis Johnson; Olivia and Theo Lohrer; Maggie, Lizzie and Jack Jr. Lohrer; and Jesse and Riley Lefebvre.  His great-grandchild is Sebastian Johnson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11a.m. on Saturday, November 2, at St. Clements Church, 231 Lake Ave. Saratoga Springs, NY.

Burial with Military Honors will take place on November 4, at 11:00 a.m. at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.

SARATOGA SPRINGS —Kimberly Galvin Janelle passed away at home on October 25, 2024 after a long and admirable battle with cancer. Kim was with her loving family. She was 59 years old. Kim was the beloved wife of 15 years of Brian Janelle.

Born in Saratoga Springs on September 14, 1965, Kim was the daughter of Neal N. and Sandra Galvin. She remained a lifelong Saratogian.

Kim graduated from Saratoga Springs High School (class of 1983), Union College and Vermont Law School.

Kim was an attorney who spent most of her career proudly serving New York. She began her career focusing on criminal law as a public defender, a district attorney and an assistant attorney general. She subsequently served as chief of staff and counsel to the minority leader of the State Assembly and later as counsel to the State Board of Elections, from where she retired. Kim also served on the Saratoga Springs Civil Service Commission, Police Reform Task Force and the State Public Campaign Finance Commission.

Kim met Brian during his frequent visits to her Saratoga neighborhood and they wed in 2009. They shared many special times together including many trips to New York City (for plays and visits to St. Patrick’s Cathedral), Italy (to view Pope Francis), Switzerland, Augusta, GA, Aruba, and Lake Placid. They loved to watch professional golf together especially when Tiger Woods played. They also, enjoyably, raised two dogs, Guinness Henry and Leo Francis.

In addition to her being a faithful Catholic, Kim had many other passions. First and foremost, she loved speaking with and singing to her mother. She also loved shopping (particularly for Christmas gifts for her family). She was a voracious reader (notably books about serial killers), a music lover (country) and a lifelong participant in local and national politics (about which she was not afraid to share her opinions) through which she met a President and other candidates. Kim enjoyed watching other sports too (rooting for the Yankees, Bills, the Duke basketball team, and her grade school nephews). Kim also advocated for veterans and healthcare issues.

She was loved and will be missed by many.

Kimberly is survived in Saratoga Springs by her husband Brian Janelle, her mother Sandra Galvin, her two brothers Neal R. Galvin (Stacie) and Mark Galvin and her sister Cindy Aloisi of Stillwater. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Kimberly was pre-deceased by her father, Neal N. Galvin, with whom she shared a truly special relationship, her sister Catherine Galvin James and her grandmother Violet LaFarr.

SARATOGA SPRINGS —Thomas W. Schrade, 69, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024, in his Saratoga Springs apartment. He was born May 9, 1955 in Saratoga Springs to the late John “Jack” and Nancy Schrade and was a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School.

Tom began his career by working for his father at Schrade’s Greenhouses and Landscaping before joining Palette Stone, where he dedicated 34 years until his retirement in 2014. Tom loved his years spent working at Palette Stone and deeply valued the friendships he built with his colleagues. Whether it was bringing Ryan along for all the sports fan fun or collecting memorabilia, polishing coins, or teaching him the ways of the horse track—his son was his best bud, always along for the ride. The memories made at Gaffney’s, Old Bryan Inn, and Ash Grove will never be forgotten.

Tom also had a lifelong passion for gardening, always tending to the plants and flowers wherever he resided. His main hobbies included golf and horse racing, as he loved any time spent at the Saratoga racetrack during track season.

On weekends, naps on the porch were a cherished routine, and he spent as much time outdoors as possible, soaking up the sunshine. His deep connection to Saratoga Springs remained strong throughout his life, and it was a place he never wanted to leave.

Tom was predeceased by his parents, John “Jack” Schrade and Nancy Schrade. He is survived by his son, Ryan Schrade, and his wife, Michelle Schrade; his two sisters, Gretchen (Jimmy Squires) and Carol (John Kelly); and his brother, John Schrade (Cindy LaPell).

The family would like to give a special thanks to Regina Colaes, Dan Colaes, and Ron and Bonnie Wall for their dedicated care and support of Tom in recent years. Your kindness and constant availability were greatly appreciated by Tom and his family.

A personal note from his son, Ryan, “At 42 years old, I finally feel like an adult, and that’s because of you, Dad. I’ll carry your wisdom and strength with me for the rest of my days. Thank you, Dad, for everything.”

Saratoga Springs — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Regis Brodie on October 10, 2024, at his home and with his loving family by his side.  Regis was born on November 19, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Walter and Anne Brodie.

During his life, Regis gave all of himself in everything he did.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and so much more.  He believed that true fulfillment and success in life was to be found in the journey, using those moments along the way to positively impact others.  He saw every such moment as an opportunity, and his impact has been profound.

He met the love of his life, Becky (Wilhelm), whom he would always call his “sun, moon and stars”, when they were teenagers in 1958.  They were married on July 4, 1964, while Regis was still a student at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  He earned his B.S. in Art Education and his M.Ed. in Art Education from there in 1965 and 1966 respectively.  He then went on to receive his M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art of Temple University in 1969.  That same year, he and Becky moved to Saratoga Springs where he began what would become a more than 41-year tenure as Professor of Art at Skidmore College.  During most of that time (35 years), Regis also served as the Director of the Summer SIX Art Program.

Upon his retirement from Skidmore College in 2010, he was awarded the honorary title of Professor Emeritus in recognition of his distinguished career. 

Regis always believed that art could bring people joy.  He was passionate about it and loved to teach others, regardless of their age or ability.  In addition to those students enrolled at the college, he also taught children at the Arts Center in downtown Saratoga Springs, and adults during night classes offered to non-traditional students.  He could see that everyone had potential, and he was a master at helping them harness it.

As an artist, Regis created an incredible volume of work, consisting of paintings, sculptures and vessels, which have earned countless awards and are included in museum collections throughout the world including, among others, Museo de Ceramica in Barcelona, Spain; Musee National de la Ceramique in Sevres, France; Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, England; National Museum & Galleries of Wales in Cardiff, Wales; Raccolta Internazionale D’Arte Ceramica Contemporanea in Faenza, Italy.  He also lectured extensively, appeared at both juried and invitational exhibitions, published numerous articles, had his work included in national and international periodicals, and even authored a book.

Above all else, though, Regis loved his family.  He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and always ensured they knew how much they were loved and valued.  He also taught them to appreciate life’s journey and to always seize those moments along the way. 

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Becky Brodie; daughters, Laura Ellor (Jay); Ellen Brodie; Courtney DeLeonardis (Vincent); son Bradford Brodie; and grandchildren, Tyler Ellor (Kristen); Mackenzie Ellor (Gaetano-Junior Del Corpo); Dylan Ellor (Ashley); Madison Trapp; Skyler Trapp; Sydney DeLeonardis; Avery DeLeonardis and Mason DeLeonardis.
