Nothing chases away winter’s chill like a bowl of hearty, homemade soup. The diverse, farm-fresh food brought to Saratoga Farmers’ Market each Saturday offers ample selection—even in the middle of winter—to create a tasty and nutritious soup at home.

To inspire you, and to invite you to linger and chat with the vendors a bit, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market will hold its “Soup’s On” celebration this Saturday, January 26th, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Several vendors will ladle out free samples of homemade soup using their own ingredients. Featured soups will likely include a mushroom-vegetable soup, cheese soup, yogurt-infused soup, as well as soups with meat and soups with root vegetables.

Don’t be shy about asking for a recipe if you taste a soup you especially like. That’s one of the advantages of shopping at a farmers’ market: being able to talk to the people who grow the food and know how to prepare it.

I hope to see you at the market this weekend when the “Soup’s On!” The market is open 9 am to 1 p.m. every Saturday at Division Street Elementary School, and the soup event runs from 10 a.m. to noon.

Farmers’ Market Soup Recipes

If you want to try some additional recipes using Saratoga Farmers’ Market ingredients, visit the market’s website page for recipes. Some of the soup and chili recipes you’ll find include:

Creamy Turnip Soup

“Game On” Chili

After you experiment with some recipes and become familiar with soup-making techniques, you’ll find you can easily create soups on your own. Stroll through the market and let your eyes write your recipe, as you take in what’s available.
