There are several terrific food and farm events happening in and around Saratoga this month, including hands-on classes, new farmers’ markets, food demos, and farm tours. All of them will connect you with some of the great farm and food resources of this area.

Calendar ready? Here’s this month’s line-up:

Already open: Saratoga Farmers’ Market, on Wednesdays 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in High Rock Park in Saratoga Springs. Voted favorite farmers’ market in New York State in 2011 and 2012, this market celebrates its 35th anniversary this summer. 50+ vendors under three pavilions and on the lawn. 

Tuesday, 6/4Malta Farmers’ Market opens for the season. Open every Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at 2570 Route 9, in the Allerdice ACE Hardware parking lot. Get all the details about opening day, including free face painting for the kids. This market is run by the Saratoga Farmers’ Market Association, so you can expect high-quality, locally grown and produced items, including vegetables, apples and berries, plants and flowers, cheese, meat, poultry, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, sewn handcrafts, and a knife and garden tool sharpening service.

Sunday, 6/9Spa City Market opens at the Spa State Park, 99 South Broadway, Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Thursday, 6/13Farm Tour in Washington County. Join the Cornell Cooperative Extension for a tour of two local farms and learn about the nutritional and environmental benefits of grass-fed farming. The tour will begin at the Saratoga Farmers' Market pavilion at High Rock Park at 8:30 a.m. From there, the group will head to Argyle, to Mack Brook Farm, which sits on 300 acres of land and specializes in free-range, grassfed beef.  Second stop: Homestead Artisans at Longview Farm, which focuses on pasture raised meats and free-range eggs. The farm also produces fresh and aged cheeses from their own goats and local dairy cows. To register, call (518) 885-8995.

Thursday, 6/13Ballston Spa Farmers’ Market begins, 3 to 6 p.m. (Thursdays) and 9 a.m. to noon (Saturdays) from June 13th to September 28th in Wiswall Park.

Friday, 6/14 – Food Demonstration at Saratoga Olive Oil, 484 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 6 to 8 p.m. Saratoga Olive Oil's personal chef, Hayley Miller, has created a five-course selection of tapas dishes focusing on the cuisine along the Cote d'Azur in southern France. $20 per person. Saturday, 6/15 – Food tent opens at Saratoga Farmers’ Market. (High Rock Park, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays). On Saturdays, the tent will feature several vendors of ready-to-eat food, so you can have a meal at the market and relax at the tables, before or after you shop. On Wednesday, the market will use the tent space for special activities. 

Sunday, 6/16Sundae on the Farm. McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, noon to 4 p.m.  A family event, featuring Stewart’s ice cream, milk, and pie a la mode. Learn about agriculture, take a tour of equine facilities, enjoy food demos by local chefs, horse-drawn wagons, and more. 

Thursday, 6/27 – Making Jam, Jelly, and Dried Fruit Rolls, 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension office, 50 West High Street, Ballston Spa. Register by calling (518) 885-8995. $15 per person. Part of the four-part 2013 Food Preservation Class Series.

Deb Czech harvests a fresh crop of local food and farming news each week. Drawing on her promotions work for Saratoga Farmers’ Market, as well as her connections to other regional food and agricultural projects, she serves up tasty insights to help put more local products on our plates.

Active in the Saratoga community through her business, Miles Ahead Communications, and as a member of Saratoga Springs Rotary Club, Deb lives with her husband and two children in Wilton.

  • Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office  A 20-year-old Watervliet man was charged with first degree manslaughter after allegedly “striking another person with a large wrench and causing that person’s death,” according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said they received a call of a fight in progress on Sparrow Drive in the town of Malta and the Investigation into the complaint led to the arrest of Cyrus J. Tetreault, 20, of Watervliet.  The victim was identified as 53-year-old Malta resident Brian M.
