Local Comic to film  Comedy Special March 29

ALBANY – Local comedian Erin Harkes has announced the live recording of her upcoming comedy album and live special for YouTube. 

The special will take place Wednesday, March 29 at Albany Funny Bone. Doors open at 6 and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. Also on the bill are Jaye McBride (who recently wrapped up a tour with Amy Schumer) and local favorite Jennifer McMullen as the host and emcee for the evening. 

Harkes has been a top comic in the Capital Region for nearly a decade and performs/produces shows across the country year-round. 

The recording marks a follow-up to her debut album in 2021 “Zoloft + Probation,” released on Toronto based label Howl and Roar Records. 

In addition to the recording – also to be released on Howl and Roar – the special will be taped to be released on YouTube later this year.

Saratoga Clay Arts Center Duo Exhibition Opening Reception March 25

SARATOGA SPRINGS – New York City Ballet will virtually audition area children to perform in the company’s production of Firebird by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins during its summer residency at SPAC from July 18 – 22. 

Casting for Firebird includes roles for 14 girls from 9-12 years old who are between 4 feet 7 inches and 5 feet tall. Understudies will also be cast. Applicants should have some ballet training; however, there is no dancing involved in these roles.

The children who are selected will rehearse on Wednesday, July 19 and Thursday, July 20 from 4-6pm at the SPAC School of the Arts studios located behind the National Museum of Dance. The final rehearsal will take place on the afternoon of Friday, July 21 in the SPAC Amphitheater. Performances will be held at 7:30pm on July 21 and at 2pm on July 22.  

Selected children and accompanying adults must adhere to protocols imposed by Saratoga Performing Arts Center and New York City Ballet related to COVID-19.

Scheduled for two performances on July 21 at 7:30 p.m. and July 22 at 2 p.m., Firebird will be featured as part of a program that also includes Balanchine’s Swan Lake and Robbins’ Fancy Free. Firebird illustrates an enchanting Russian fairytale and the fantastical creatures of its strange world with stunning sets and costumes designed by Marc Chagall. The children appear in the last wedding tableau.

Casting Call: NYCB Auditions for Local Children in Firebird SPAC Season

SCHUYLERVILLE – Saratoga Clay Arts Center’s Schacht Gallery presents Architectonic: Wesley Brown & Bryan Hopkins, a duo exhibition showcasing two artists who are pushing the material to its limits – exerting force, pushing the clay as far is it will go – all to achieve pieces that are refined and expressive, with sculptural and functional vessels being the result

Architectonic: Wesley Brown & Bryan Hopkins will run March 25 – April 29, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 25, from 5-7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Both artists will be presenting workshops during the exhibition. 

Founded in 2010 by clay artist and educator Jill Kovachick, Saratoga Clay Arts Center is a ceramic art center located in Schuylerville, offering wheel throwing and handbuilding clay classes for youth and adults, studio space and residencies for artists, and exhibitions featuring emerging, mid-career and established clay artists. Thursday Deadline for Apply for Not-for-Profit Arts Grants 

CAPITAL REGION – Fairgame Arts Grants – a funding opportunity for non-profit arts and cultural organizations will accept applications through Thursday, March 23 at 5 p.m.

Not-for-profit organizations based in 27 counties – including the Capital Region – are eligible to apply for grants from $1,000–$5,000, as announced by the Upstate Theater Coalition for a Fairgame.

Since 2019, the Arts Grant has been awarded to nearly 100 non-profit arts and cultural organizations and distributed more than $300,000 in funding. 

The Upstate Theater Coalition for a Fairgame was created in partnership with the State of New York and the casinos in the three gaming regions: Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady, Resorts World Catskills, del Lago Resort & Casino and Tioga Downs Casino Resort. Coalition members are: Bardavon Presents (Poughkeepsie), Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (Bethel), Clemens Center (Elmira), Forum Theatre (Binghamton), Palace Performing Arts Center (Albany), Proctors (Schenectady), Rochester Broadway Theatre League’s Auditorium Theatre (Rochester), Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs City Center, State Theatre of Ithaca, Times Union Center (Albany) and Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

SPAC’s CulinaryArts@SPAC Presents: Wines of the Finger Lakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Saratoga Performing Arts Center has announced the latest CulinaryArts@SPAC event, Eric Asimov: Wines of the Finger Lakes, will take place 6-8:30 p.m. April 20 at Canfield Casino.

Eric Asimov, New York Times chief wine critic and author, will lead guests through an expert guided tasting of six different wines from New York’s Finger Lakes region including Riesling, the signature wine of the region, as well as a selection of reds from Ravines Wine Cellars, Forge Cellars and Bloomer Creek Vineyard, in addition to a sparkling wine from chëpìka. Hors d’oeuvres to complement the wines will also be served. 

Asimov’s column appears in the Food section of The Times. On his participation in the upcoming CulinaryArts@SPAC event, Asimov said in a statement: “The Finger Lakes is the most exciting wine region in New York and one of the most interesting in the United States.”

TLC, Shaggy, En Vogue to Stage Tour at Saratoga in June

SARATOGA SPRINGS – TLC and Jamaican icon Shaggy have announced they will join forces to bring their most beloved hits to stage with TLC & Shaggy: Hot Summer Nights Tour 2023. 

The tour will also feature performances from special guests En Vogue and Sean Kingston.

Fans can expect the artists to perform their biggest hits including TLC’s “Waterfalls,” “No Scrubs,” “Unpretty,” and “Creep”; Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me,” “Boombastic,” and “Angel”; En Vogue’s “Hold On, My Loving (Never Gonna Get It)”, and “Free Your Mind”; and Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” and “Take You There.” 

The tour kicks off on June 1 in Pelham, AL., and includes a stop at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, on Friday, June 16.

Vance Gilbert – Live at Caffe Lena Sunday Night

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Singer, songwriter and performer, Vance Gilbert, will stage a show Sunday, March 19 at Caffe Lena.  

Gilbert’s 14th studio album, The Mother of Trouble, is scheduled for release May 5. The songs on the LP include the stories of 4 bullies, 3 deaths (2 of them murders), 2 accidents, 2 moms, 2 black people, 1 dog, 1 ball, and 1 missed flight from a vital storyteller at the top of his game. 

Blurbage: The songs on The Mother of Trouble traverse sonic landscapes including country rock, folk, R&B, Jazz, and Americana. Gilbert is known for his wordplay, engaging and vibrant storytelling, sonic exploration, and bringing levity to the human experiences he writes about. Thirty years into his career, the songwriter’s influence can be felt all over the contemporary Folk and Americana realm as he has helped pave the way for many of the BIPOC artists who have followed.

Counting Crows / Dashboard Confessional at SPAC July 5

SARATOGA SPRINGS – After performing to sold-out crowds worldwide on the Butter Miracle Tour over the last two years, Counting Crows this week announced their return to the US in 2023 with the Banshee Season Tour. 

After years of collaboration, cult-favorite rock band and long-time friend of the band, Dashboard Confessional, will be joining as support on the upcoming run, with English singer/songwriter Frank Turner joining the tour for select dates. 

The 56-date mega tour will kick off on June 13 in Omaha, NE, with a stop at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, on July 5.

Northeast Woodworkers Showcase

The Northeast Woodworkers Association will be celebrating 30 years of presenting one of the premiere woodworking shows in the country at the Saratoga Springs City Center, 522 Broadway, Saratoga Springs on March 25 and 26, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is $15, children under 12 free. Audition Announcement

Malta Spotlighter’s Theatre Troupe announces auditions for ‘The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree’; produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Services; directed by Elyse Young. Auditions are by appointment only – Sunday, March 26 and Monday, March 27.  ‘The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree’, a swashbuckling musical comedy set in the late 1800s aboard the merchant ship “Kayla May”, will be performed Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 on the Malta Community Center Stage. Polka Dance

The Knights of Columbus Assembly #245 will be hosting a Polka Dance on Sunday, April 2, from 2 – 6 p.m., to benefit the Veterans & Community Housing Coalition (VCHC), Ballston Spa.  It will be held at the KOC Hall on 50 Pine Road, Saratoga Springs, music will be provided by Tony’s Polka Band. 2nd Annual Awards Ceremony

The trustees and staff of the Saratoga County History Center are thrilled to announce the second annual Saratoga County Public History Award ceremony.  The gala event will be held at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa on April 13 at 7 p.m. The April gala will be both a celebration of the award winners and a preview of the May re-opening of the beloved museum. Southern Saratoga Art Society Exhibits

The Clifton Park Senior Community Center Gallery, 6 Clifton Commons Ct., in Clifton Park and the Southern Saratoga Art Society will be hosting a show during the month of March featuring selected artwork of Shenendehowa High School students.   There will be 30 pieces of artwork including a variety of media.  The Mechanicville Library, 190 N. This year’s event will be 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the Saratoga National Golf Course. All proceeds raised go towards our education programs through the Collaborative School of the Arts, which is an incredibly important aspect of arts for youth in our area. Spring Fling Festival

  The Spring Fling Festival is benefiting the Adirondack Vets House, Inc by bringing our area’s businesses together to create a day of fun in the sun for everyone! Free admission, open to the public.  There will be pony rides and farm animals, bounce houses, a dunk tank, cornhole tournament, face painting, food trucks, candle making, local vendors, live music, raffle baskets, carnival games and more! The goal is to maximize attendance and support local business all while raising very critical funds for the Adirondack Vets House, Inc.  The Car Shoppe will be hosting the first Annual Spring Fling Festival on Saturday May 20 from Noon – 5 p.m.  Rain date is May 21, noon-5 p.m.

Northeast Woodworkers Showcase

The Northeast Woodworkers Association will be celebrating 30 years of presenting one of the premiere woodworking shows in the country at the Saratoga Springs City Center, 522 Broadway, Saratoga Springs on March 25 and 26, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is $15, children under 12 free. Audition Announcement

Malta Spotlighter’s Theatre Troupe announces auditions for ‘The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree’; produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Services; directed by Elyse Young. Auditions are by appointment only – Sunday, March 26 and Monday, March 27.  ‘The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree’, a swashbuckling musical comedy set in the late 1800s aboard the merchant ship “Kayla May”, will be performed Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 on the Malta Community Center Stage. Over 26 speaking and/or singing solo roles are available for kids, teens, and adults. ADK Tabletop Day 2023

Adirondacon presents the Tabletop Gaming Convention at the Charles R. Wood theater, Glens Falls on April 1. Game demos, open gaming, large lending library, vendors, door prizes, raffles, and more. Polka Dance

The Knights of Columbus Assembly #245 will be hosting a Polka Dance on Sunday, April 2, from 2 – 6 p.m., to benefit the Veterans & Community Housing Coalition (VCHC), Ballston Spa.  It will be held at the KOC Hall on 50 Pine Road, Saratoga Springs, music will be provided by Tony’s Polka Band. 2nd Annual Awards Ceremony

The trustees and staff of the Saratoga County History Center are thrilled to announce the second annual Saratoga County Public History Award ceremony.  The gala event will be held at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa on April 13 at 7 p.m. The April gala will be both a celebration of the award winners and a preview of the May re-opening of the beloved museum. Southern Saratoga Art Society Exhibits

The Clifton Park Senior Community Center Gallery, 6 Clifton Commons Ct., in Clifton Park and the Southern Saratoga Art Society will be hosting a show during the month of March featuring selected artwork of Shenendehowa High School students.   There will be 30 pieces of artwork including a variety of media.  The Mechanicville Library, 190 N.
