Sept. 18: “Let us have Peace” at Grant Cottage

WILTON — U.S Grant’s presidential campaign slogan after the Civil War was “Let us have Peace” and on Sunday, Sept. 18, U.S. Grant Cottage marks International Peace Week, by hosting a special event featuring members of the Peace Corps and former Congressman Chris Gibson.

Grant was the general who led the first million-man army and won the Civil War, but he also knew that “Peace is not won; Peace is built.” Grant started the U.S. Department of Justice, rounded up 3,000 members of the Ku Klux Klan and prevented President Andrew Johnson from hanging Robert E. Lee for treason. Grant knew peace required reconciliation.

Siena College president, Dr. Chris Gibson will speak about his experiences as a combat veteran in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo. Several Peace Corps volunteers, an army of a different sort, will speak of their experiences building peace with international service.

Additionally, former Congressman Joseph Kennedy III will join the event by video, Grant Re-enactor Steve Trimm will portray Ulysses Grant as president, folksinger Dan Berggren, and several Returned Peace Corps Volunteers will share personal stories and experiences, while in service to different countries, around the globe.

The event takes place 2 – 4:15 p.m. Sept. 18 at Grant Cottage, Wilton. For more information, go to:  www.grantcottage.org.

Inspired by the Velvet Underground and the New York Mets: Yo La Tengo Stages Show Sept. 26

The legendary band Yo La Tengo, as captured in a city image by the legendary photographer David Godlis. Photo: Matador Records.

ALBANY —  The 1962 New York Mets, a team so charmingly inadequate – 40 wins, 120 losses and 60 games out of first place – their play inspired legendary scribesman Jimmy Breslin to pen a book about them, titled “Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game?”

Ira Kaplan, long before he would wed Georgia Hubley and the musical pair formed their seminal band, was born in the borough where the Mets made their marvelous mess when he was five years old.  Now as the story goes, despite advance calls of warning to verbally signal “I Got It!”  Mets’ fielders Elio Chacon and Richie Ashburn collided into one another so often while chasing fly balls atop the Shea Stadium grass that Ashburn eventually asked his Venezuelan teammate how to say “I Got It!” in his native tongue. “Yo La Tengo!” Chacon reportedly responded and from then on out the call would bellow across that Flushing, Queens field of dreams.

Fast-forward a couple of decades and Yo La Tengo – the musical trio – was born in Hoboken, N.J. More than a dozen studio albums later, the band is making their way across the east coast and will stage a show at Albany’s Lark Hall on Hudson Avenue, Monday, Sept. 26. If you know Yo La Tengo, you know; if you don’t, google their music to learn what you’ve been missing. For show info, go to: https://larkhallalbany.com/.

George Lorenz Muller

GREENFIELD CENTER — George Lorenz Muller left this earth very peacefully at home and his spirit was brought up to the heavens, just as he wanted, on September 6, 2022. He was 85 years old.

George was born in Brooklyn, NY. Later, in 1945 his family moved to Greenfield Center. During his early years, he remembered living with his beloved grandmother Inga (Mormor), whom he thought of as an “Angel of God ” and the “most caring person he knew;” and his caring grandfather, Arthur (Betta). He attended Saratoga City Schools, graduating in 1954. George enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduation, proudly serving for 4 years learning to be a dental hygienist. Upon the honorable completion of his service, he then worked for Norton Star Company in Syracuse, followed by Sullivan-Schein in Saratoga as a dental equipment repair technician for many years. George enjoyed traveling to many different dental offices and was well known and sought out for his ability to repair dental equipment. He always talked very fondly about his work partners, Al and Lloyd and their work adventures.

George was an avid flight enthusiast and obtained his pilot license in 1969. He loved to go to the airport, especially with his children and grandchildren to watch planes take off and land. He thoroughly enjoyed his job repairing dental equipment. George’s main avocation, especially during his retirement, was to answer the call of his children to come and fix (anything). He always displayed sheer determination and a laser focus to solve whatever mechanical problem was presented to him.

George was the son of Esther Marie Trulsen Muller and George Lorentz Stilo Muller, of Fevik Norway, Brooklyn and Greenfield Center. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, (David and Peter). He is survived by his loving family, his beloved wife and loving mother of his five children, Virginia Chase Muller and son, George Muller and his wife, Lisa and daughters, Brenda Crawford and her husband, James, Pamela Muller, Cathleen Mele and her husband, Robert and Christine Neal and her husband, Matthew; grandchildren Mindy Nyarady, Corinn Crawford, Matthew Crawford, Megan Johnny, Robert Mele, Katelyn Muller, Lydia Baptist, George (Jake) Muller and Ethan Mele and great-granddaughter, Iris Sage Muller. He is also survived by his brothers, Fredrik, Robert, Daniel, Leonard, Glenn, John and sister, Elizabeth and many extended family members and friends.

George was an excellent provider to his family and loved all his children and grandchildren. He was a very generous man, especially in the giving of his time. George was always thinking, using his wisdom, and reflecting so he could give precise guidance to help solve any problem that we might have. He was a caring grandfather and took a keen interest in his grandchildren. His presence in all our lives will be sorely missed, but he will remain in our hearts forever.

A funeral with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Gerald B. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd. Schuylerville, NY 12871. Please arrive at 10:45 a.m.
