Solo Exhibit by Victoria van der Laan Opens at Springs Street Sept. 17

Victoria van der Laan “Remembered Geometries.” Photo provided.

SARATOGA SPRINGS —Victoria van der Laan shares a collection of works called “Remembered Geometries,” at Spring Street Gallery Sept. 17 – Nov. 2

An opening reception will be held 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Remembered Geometries presents works based on traditional housetop quilt patterns. The technical use of fabrics and thread, color, line, and texture contributes to the overall complexity and magnetism of the exhibit. Van der Laan shares her craft with brilliant, sophisticated simplicity.

In addition to the traditional sales, van der Laan presents “Pay What You Wish.” “These works are 8” x 8” stretched gallery wrapped textile sketches offered at whatever price feels good to the buyer, no floor, no ceiling. The intention of this project is to promote equitable access to art and to cultivate a spirit of generosity,” said Van der Laan, in a statement.

A portion of the proceeds sold through Spring Street Gallery will benefit Youth FX. Based in Albany, Youth FX primary mission is to work with diverse groups of youth from communities that have been historically under-served and in need of opportunities to learn filmmaking and acquire skills in emerging media technologies.

Remembered Geometries is open to the public Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 am – 1 pm and by appointment on weekends. Additional hours will be announced at: springstreetgallerysaratoga.org.

Presentation: Celebrating the Feast ofSt. Michael in Saratoga Springs Sept. 27

The Bandstand on Oak Street, ca. 1950. Photo by Mario Izzo.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — City Historian Mary Ann Fitzgerald will deliver a presentation about the Feast of St. Michael, celebrated on the city’s west side dating back to the early 20th century.

The event, free and open to the public, will take place 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at The Saratoga Springs History Museum, 1 East Congress St.

Starting in 1914, the Feast of St. Michael was celebrated in late September in Saratoga Springs’ Dublin neighborhood, which had started as an Irish enclave, then became home to Italian immigrants and African Americans, among others, and is now known as the Beekman Street Arts District.

As the statue of Saint Michael was paraded down Beekman Street, people pinned money to him, which benefited the Principessa Elena Society, a community resource for newly arrived Americans that still exists today in the neighborhood. The “Festa” grew into a widely beloved celebration that embraced live music, plentiful cuisine at Dublin’s numerous Italian restaurants, and even fireworks on the outskirts of town. It ended in the 1970s, occasionally revived between 1997 and 2001.

“Everyone in Saratoga Springs went to the St. Michael’s Feast street celebration, not just Catholics and not just Italians,” says Fitzgerald, co-founder of the Saratoga Springs West Side Oral Narrative Project, which is the basis for the presentation. Funding for the event is provided by the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust.

“One commonality of the interviews in the project,” Fitzgerald says, “was that everyone remembered the Feast of St. Michael, and everyone wished it could come back.”

Schuylerville Boys Soccer Overcomes South Glens Falls in OT Thriller

SCHUYLERVILLE — On Monday, September 12, the Schuylerville Black Horses squared off against the South Glens Falls Bulldogs. South High opened the scoring midway through the first half when James Thompson elevated a shot over the outstretched arms of Griffin Brophy, Schuylerville’s goalkeeper. The score remained that way until Schuylerville’s Chris Jones evened the scoreline with 13 minutes left in the match. While the momentum seemed to be with the Black Horses, South High’s Charlie Bammert slid one home with under five minutes remaining to put the Bulldogs up 2-1. With a few ticks of the clock left, Schuylerville’s Sam Tyler took advantage of a deflected pass and tied up the game 2-2 just before the final whistle. In the first few minutes of OT, Schuylerville was awarded a free kick from 30 yards out. Corey Cottrell stepped up and found the back of the net for a game winner. The game finished 3-2, in favor of the Black Horses. Schuylerville improves to 2-0-1 in the league and 2-1-1 overall. South Glens Falls moves to 1-1 in the league and 2-2 overall.

WSWHE BOCES Set to Host CTE Works! on October 4

SARATOGA  — On Tuesday, October 4, local industry partners and Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex (WSWHE BOCES) will host CTE Works! at the Saratoga Springs City Center. CTE Works! brings 8th and 9th graders from school districts throughout the WSWHE BOCES service area to a one-day interactive career exploration event. The event exposes students to the world of work in our region and attempts to show students the career opportunities available right in their own backyard. Local employers will be on hand to discuss the pathways in their industries, what they have to offer and provide interactive activities that are examples of their work.

“It is critically important that young people meet local industry partners, experience a bit of what they do and learn about the outstanding opportunities they can have working right here in their own city or town. We encourage these interactions. CTE Works! is one of many experiences we offer that allows students to figure out what they like to do, what they want to do and what they dream they can do in the future,” said Principal for Innovative Programs at WSWHE BOCES and CTE Works! Committee Member, Michelle Maddalla.

The CTE Works! expo is designed to highlight careers throughout the region, including but not limited to:

Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources; Architecture & Construction; Arts, A/V Technology & Communications; Business, Management & Administration; Education & Training; Finance; Government & Public Administration; Health Sciences; Hospitality & Tourism; Human Services; Information Technology; Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security; Manufacturing; Marketing; Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics; Transportation, Distribution & Logistics and more.

“Truck Rodeo” to Highlight CDL Career Path

SARATOGA—The need for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders is growing exponentially across the United States. In response to the shortage of CDL Truck Drivers across our region, the Saratoga-Warren-Washington Workforce Development Board (SWW WDB), along with local trucking businesses, is hosting their first “Truck Rodeo” on September 24 to highlight the features and benefits of this career path. Organizations with truck fleets and CDL drivers interested in competing in the event are encouraged to participate. The event will take place at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The competition offers several categories of competitive vehicle classes to highlight the variety of fleets across the region, and to provide a realistic job preview of the roles and responsibilities of drivers. This event is open to all members of the public and will include a “Touch-a-Truck Corral” while representatives from the Workforce Development Board educate the community on the truck driving industry.

The modern truck driver is part of a transportation and logistics industry that moves materials across the region, state and country. E-commerce has been a catalyst for the high demand for drivers, and the pandemic has only exacerbated the worker shortage resulting in supply-chain shortfalls.

The American Trucking Association estimates that by 2028, America will need 160,000 additional drivers nationwide. The future of the industry depends upon attracting and retaining new drivers to this growing career field. Federal training dollars and other funding opportunities are available to help those seeking financial support to obtain either Class A or Class B commercial driver’s licenses. And, effective May of 2022, New York State has lowered the qualification age from 21 to 18 years old.

The goal of this upcoming event is to highlight that the perceptions of driving a truck for a living are changing. The SWW WDB want to educate and inform the community, demonstrate the skill-level and professionalism of our trucking community, and highlight the regional opportunities and significant earning potential of this career path.
