Nov. 6 Ceremony to Honor 2022 Veteran of the Year

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A ceremony honoring the Veteran of the Year for 2022 will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 at 1 Elks Lane, Saratoga Springs. The event is free and open to the public. Face masks are optional.

Veteran of the Year 2022 is David T. Wallingford, Capt, USMC a resident of Malta. Wallingford was born and raised in Albany, graduated from the College of The Holy Cross, Worcester, MA in 1966 and in 1967 was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 with the 3rd Marine Division in I Corps along the DMZ and was Honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1970 as a Captain.  

For his service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation and various campaign medals and ribbons. 

Wallingford was wounded in Vietnam on March 25, 1969.  He was medevac’d through several RVN sites before being evacuated to the USNH Yokosuka, Japan. While convalescing at the USNH he met Navy Nurse Lieutenant Helene Hill. They have now been married 52 years and are the proud parents of four children and proud grandparents of eight grandchildren.

The annual award is co-sponsored by the Friends of the New York State Military Museum and the Capital District of New York Chapter of the Association of the United States Army. Presidents of the two co-sponsor organizations will present the award. Saratoga County Supervisors Chairman Todd Kusnierz will present a Proclamation from Saratoga County. New York State Senator Jim Tedisco will present a Proclamation from the New York State Senate. A US Congressional Proclamation and a flag will be presented by Congressman Tonko and remarks by the Adjutant General of the State of New York will be given. 

Saratoga Chips and Beer Festival at Brookside Museum on Nov. 12

BALLSTON SPA —The Saratoga County History Center has announced the Saratoga Chips and Beer Festival that will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa.  

Saratoga Chips are the feature of the museum’s current exhibit, “In the Saratoga Style: Potato Chips and Their Regional Folklore.” Festival goers can enjoy Saratoga Chips, represented by Mechanicville’s DeCrescente Distributing Company. 

John Kirk and Trish Miller of Greenfield Center will provide live music. To round off the festival, there will be a campfire, a S’mores station, a silent auction, and a game of potato chip trivia. 

The festival, a benefit for the Saratoga County History Center, is $20 in advance, and $25 on the day of the event, while designated drivers will be $10. SCHC members receive a $5 discount. Snacks and the first beverage are included in the ticket price.

Saratoga County History Center Celebrates its 60th Birthday

BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga County History Center (SCHC) stages its 60th annual meeting at the Brookside Museum on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in Ballston Spa. 

The trustees offer a “show and tell” featuring some of their favorite items from the SCHC collection, an overview of upcoming exhibits, and their vision for the future. The annual budget will be presented, and there will be voting for new trustees. The event is open to the public.

The Saratoga County History Center was organized in 1962 as the Saratoga County Historical Society. In 1970, the organization acquired the former Aldridge House resort hotel and opened it as a museum. The History Center holds its annual meeting in November. Fall Fest Continues with Family-Friendly Scavenger Hunt 

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Saturday, October 22, the Downtown Business Association hosted their annual “Fall Festival.” It was a day full of entertainment, with activities like trick-or-treating, pumpkin rolling, costume contests, sidewalk parades and, at the end of the night, a Hocus Pocus on the big screen. While many businesses participated in the festivities throughout the day, for some, the festivities are ongoing. The DBA has announced a two-week-long pumpkin scavenger hunt that will conclude on Sunday, October 30. 10 pumpkins painted with famous Saratoga scenes or landmarks have been scattered throughout the town in a variety of businesses. To begin the search, follow the DBA on social media (@downtownsaratoga) and look for posts that provide clues as to where the pumpkins could be! Once all 10 are found, drop off the sheet (a printable version can be found on the Downtown Business Association’s website) at Impressions of Saratoga, Menges & Curtis or Celtic Treasures to be entered to win a downtown Saratoga gift basket, valued at $200. The winner will be notified on November 1.

Saturday: Witch Walk & Dance To Support Animal Organizations

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 2022 Witch Walk & Dance takes place 3-11 p.m. in downtown Saratoga Springs on Saturday, Oct. 22. 

The event  – a fundraiser/benefit to raise donations to support animal organizations, encourages folks to put together their most imaginative “witchy attire” and decorate the streets with their beautiful hats, brooms, and costumes all for a cause. 

For 16 years (originally the Ballston Spa Witch Walk) the event has offered the opportunity for dance fun, flash mob-like dances to lively music throughout the evening, in various locations. 

Organized by Witch Walk SOSA, registration and wristband pickup is from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Soundbar, 6 Caroline Street.

The Witch Walk originated as an evening pub crawl back in 2005 and has grown to be a fun evening out not only focused on pubs but also for those that just love the ambiance, dancing, and the event’s mission to raise money for various animal organizations. The Witch Dance was started in 2016 thank you to a German witch dance group Wolfshager Hexenbrut, and the Happy Haggs Dance Troupe from western N.Y. In 2019, over 500 “witches” participate in the event with many spectators coming out to donate and enjoy the festivities. 

Bars included in the open pub crawl in Saratoga Springs for 2022 are: The Soundbar / The Misfit / Caroline Street Pub / Spa City Tap and Barrel / Saratoga City Tavern/ The Icehouse. They will be offering Tito’s Vodka drink specials and other specials for all wristband participants.

The Life of U.S. Grant Exhibit at Brookside Museum

BALLSTON SPA —To celebrate the Bicentennial of Ulysses S. Grant’s Birthday, the Presidential Library at Mississippi State University has created a traveling exhibit about Grant’s life.  

Banners describe his life from his humble beginnings until his accession to the United States presidency.

The exhibition will be presented at the Brookside Museum at the Saratoga County History Center as part of a special agreement between Friends of Grant Cottage. The exhibition runs to Nov. 11 during regular business hours (Thursday-Sunday from 1-5 p.m.).

Campfire Concerts at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park

WILTON — Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be hosting a fun and warming day of campfire concerts on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 1-4 p.m. While the focus will be on live music, there will also be refreshments, roasting marshmallows, a fall scavenger hunt and more… all while warming up by the campfire. 

In keeping with their work with the endangered Karner blue butterfly the musical performers will feature “blue”grass and the “blues.” The Red Spruce Band and Thomasina Winslow will be the featured artists. At last year’s concert, Winslow collected information from the audience about the Karner blue butterfly and she will be performing her Karner Butterfly Blues for the first time in front of an audience.

This is a free program. Saratoga Arts made this program possible with a Community Arts Grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Saratoga International Flavorfeast Returns on Saturday, Oct. 8

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The seventh annual Saratoga International Flavorfeast will take place 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. The popular local food festival marks its returns after a two-year pandemic hiatus. 

During the event attendees may travel the streets of downtown Saratoga Springs and experience a feast of flavors from around the globe while enjoying multi-cultural street performances throughout the day.

“Our inspiration for creating this event was to showcase the variety of restaurants we enjoy in this region and to highlight the tremendous skills of our local chefs,” event co-organizer Ashley Dingeman said, in a statement. “Fall is a beautiful time of year to walk the streets of Saratoga, and sample incredible tastes from local restaurants representing countries from all around the world.”

Flavorfeast “passport-maps,” which display participating restaurants/businesses can be picked up in front of Fingerpaint Marketing on the corner of Broadway and Division Street, beginning at 11 a.m. on festival day. 

Food samples will be available for $1 or $2. Participating venues include: Ben & Jerry’s, Boca Bistro, Brick at 2 West, Cantina, Cardona’s Market Saratoga, Gaffney’s, Henry St. Taproom, Kaleidoscope Café, Karavalli, Saratoga Olive Oil Company, Solevo, Sushi Thai Garden, The District at 43 Phila, The Parting Glass, Trattoria Fortunata and West Avenue Chicken.
