Helen L. Berrigan
SARATOGA SPRINGS – Helen L. Berrigan of Lincoln Ave. and Friends Lake, Chestertown, passed away peacefully Friday, January 11 at Saratoga Hospital, after a brief illness. She was 91.
Born in Stillwater, she was the daughter of the late James D. McBride and Marie Farnan McBride. She started school in a one room schoolhouse in Stillwater then moved to Saratoga Springs and attended #3 School on Catherine St. Helen was a 1939 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School.
She was employed as a bookkeeper at T.J. Grippen Store on Caroline Street and during the war worked at GE in Schenectady in the turbine department until her marriage to Thomas F. Berrigan III. Helen, Tom, their family and many friends enjoyed summers at their home/camp in Valentine Park on Friends Lake. She loved her gin, playing cards, bowling, fishing, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and most of all, dancing with Tom.
In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her husband, Tom; her brother James McBride; her sister Margaret McBride and a granddaughter.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas F. (Carol) Berrigan of Schuylerville, Joseph P. (Patricia) Berrigan of Saratoga Springs, George M. (JoAnn) Berrigan of South Glens Falls; two daughters, Margaret Berrigan (Ed Papero) and Nancy (Jack) Reap all of Houston, TX; a sister, Jane M. James of South Glens Falls; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Helen’s family would like to give special thanks to the Saratoga Springs Fire Dept., Dr. Case and the nurses in the emergency room, Dr. Ares and the nursing staff on C3 for the excellent care given to Helen during her stay at the hospital.
Graveside services will be at the Chestertown Cemetery in the spring, at the convenience of the family.
