Schuylerville Boys’ Soccer Currently Top of Foothills Council
The Schuylerville Varsity boys’ soccer team is currently first in the Foothills Council with a record of 4-0-1 in league play and 6-1-1 overall.
The Black Horses won the Foothills council last year but were bounced out of the Section 2 Class B tournament by Broadalbin-Perth in the quarterfinals.
This year the team is gaining traction before a sectional run.
The #8-ranked Peru Nighthawks in NYS Class A traveled south to take on the #13-ranked Schuylerville Black Horses in Class B in a highly competitive matchup on Saturday, September 26.
Peru came out strong, creating some scoring opportunities from long range, but Schuylerville goalkeeper Ethan Spodnick was up to the challenge, making a few saves to keep the Nighthawks off the scoreboard.
As the first half progressed, Schuylerville settled into its game and began moving the ball through the midfield. The Horses were rewarded for their pressure when Colden Harrison found the back of the net with a beautiful strike to give Schuylerville a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Horses came out quickly in the second half and doubled their lead when Thomas Tyler redirected a Carter Jennings throw-in into the goal.
Peru refused to go away, however. Deacon Whitmarsh was able to get behind the Schuylerville defense and calmly slot a shot home to cut the deficit to 2-1. Ten minutes later, Whitmarsh found himself in nearly the identical situation and finished again, bringing the Nighthawks level at 2-2.
With 15 minutes remaining, Schuylerville was awarded a penalty after Dean Barraclough was taken down in the box. Tyler stepped up and calmly converted the opportunity, completing his second goal of the night and giving the Horses a 3-2 lead.
Schuylerville held on over the final minutes to secure an exciting victory over a talented Peru team.
It was a great match from both teams, with plenty of intensity, quality play and determination from start to finish.
