With summer in full swing, it’s the season for county fairs, farmers’ markets, and food preservation classes. Take advantage of the great resources in this area and learn more about local agriculture and better nutrition for you and your family.

Here are some of the events for the remainder of July:

7/11 – Clifton Park Farmers’ Market opens for the season at 912 Route 146 (parking lot of St. George’s church, near the corner of Moe Road). The market will include several vendors selling vegetables and fruits, sweet and savory baked goods, specialty crackers, jams, prepared entrees, plants, and more.

7/16-7/21 – Saratoga County Fair, Ballston Spa, NY.  Yes, there are rides and “fair food,” but don’t forget to tour the agriculture displays, 4-H projects, and livestock barns to learn about Saratoga County’s farms.

7/16 – Benefit dinner with Slow Food Saratoga Region and Old Friends at Cabin Creek in Greenfield invite you to feast on local food, meet the retired thoroughbreds, dine in the barn, and otherwise enjoy a lovely evening benefit. Details here. Those who arrive early will have a private tour to meet some of the famous four-legged retirees.

7/17 – “Farm Fresh” at Saratoga Farmers’ Market, 3-6 p.m. at High Rock Park, with a focus on blueberries and other summer fruit. This event continues the market’s Wednesday-market educational series. Market talk and introduction to fruit farms at 4:45 at the red tent across from the market’s information shed. In addition to the market talks, throughout the market you’ll spot the vendors selling summer fruits by the balloons at their tables, and be able to pick up prep tips and recipes. (Saratoga Farmers’ Market is also open Saturdays from 9-1 each week.)

7/20 - Making Jam, Jelly & Dried Fruit Rolls, 10:00 am - 12:30 pm at Cornell Cooperative Extension office, 50 West High Street, Ballston Spa. Participants will use fresh fruit to make a reduced-sugar jam, and freezer jam. Will also make dried fruit rolls; a great snack for kids. Participants will take home a jar of jam made at the workshop. Register by calling 885-8995. $15 per person. Part of the four-part 2013 Food Preservation Class Series.

7/23 – Malta Farmers’ Market, open every Tuesday from 3-6 at the Allerdice parking lot on Route 9, near Malta Community Center, will have special educational activities for adults and kids. Check the market’s Facebook page and www.maltafarmersmarket.org for details as the date draws closer.

7/24 – “Farm Fresh” at Saratoga Farmers’ Market, 3-6 p.m. at High Rock Park, with a focus on dairy: milk, cheese, and yogurt. Market talk and introduction to milk and cheese farms at 4:45 at the red tent across from the market’s information shed.

7/31 – “Farm Fresh” at Saratoga Farmers’ Market, 3-6 p.m. at High Rock Park, with a focus on two of summer’s favorite vegetables: corn and tomatoes. Market talk and introduction to produce farms at 4:45 at the red tent across from the market’s information shed.
