New England Convenient Store Chain has Plans for Malta

By Marissa Gonzalez | Business

MALTA — At a Dec. 18 Malta Planning board meeting, a popular convenient store chain in New England, Alltown, proposed a new store location in the town. The chain has over 70 locations in the New England region. This is the second Alltown planned for the Capital Region.

Alltown proposed a 4,800 square-foot convenient store and gas station on the corner of Old Post Road and County Route 9. The store is on roughly 4.74 acres of and on two parcels according to Jaime O’Neill, the Building and Planning Coordinator for the town of Malta. So far there are no cost projections because the Town of Malta does not require cost estimates for any application.

“They just made a concept plan to the Planning Board, so there’s no formal application in. They were just laying out what they thought they would like to do on the site and get a read from the planning board as to if it was positive or negative before they generated an application,” O’Neill said.

According to O’Neill, the traffic is robust at this intersection. She says it is one of the busiest intersections in Malta, if not, the busiest. Previously at this location was a mobile gas station and Dunkin Donuts, which it will be replacing.

“They got a positive feedback from the Planning Board. Everyone thought that it would be a good way to update that existing site because the buildings are aged and so they gave them the nod to go ahead and start pursuing additional engineering aspects,” O’Neill said.

However, the property is in a low-lying wet area, so according to O’Neill there are some concerns about that. She expects the board will not see more from Alltown until February, because the application deadline for January was on Dec. 28.

Alltown is part of the Global Partners family of brands that also includes Xtramart and Honey Farms. Global Partners has a portfolio of approximately 800 owned or supplied gas stations under brands including Mobil, Exxon, Shell, Sunoco, Gulf, CITGO and Global. Alltown carries all typical convenient store items including cooked hot meals as well.

Alltown was contacted in regards to the location and said, “at this time, it is too early in the process for Global Partners to disclose information regarding this location.”
