Community Torah Project: Making Parchment from a Local Deerskin

Tang Teaching Museum,

A hands-on educational workshop with Rabbi Linda Motzkin, the public is invited to take part in the Community Torah Project. Participants will help with the stretching and scraping of a local deerskin. This immersive educational activity will engage the Skidmore community and public in the sacred production of parchment, which will ultimately be used in the creation of a Torah scroll. Galway Preservation Society Program

Historian and Education Director at the Schoharie Crossing Historic Site David Brooks will present a talk on “DeWitt’s Duel”, exploring the life of DeWitt Clinton and the politics of early America and New York State. DeWitt Clinton was governor of New York State, a US Senator, and Mayor of New York City. He has been called the “Father of the Erie Canal” for his role in orchestrating the building of the Canal by some, while others called the project “Clinton’s Folly” or “Clinton’s Ditch”. David Brooks will explain how political wranglings and intrigue led to DeWitt’s Duel on the plains of Weehawken, New Jersey, across the river from New York City. Free and open to the public.

Celebrate a Bit of Irish

Master Martial Arts instructors John Borter and Trish Chiovari will demonstrate the Irish Martial Art of “Bataireacht,” or Shillelagh Fighting. The rich history and story of the blackthorn, the trees shillelaghs are traditionally made from, will be told by Christopher Shaw, who will also sing a few Irish songs and bend your ear with a story or two. Genealogy and Local History

1 p.m. | Heritage Hunters – Daniel Bradt will present the program, “An Archaeological Look at the Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad.” The railroad was only the 2nd built in the state and began operating in 1832. Portions of it have been the subject of archaeological digs in recent years. Dan has assisted in the digs and has worked on several other archaeology projects in Saratoga County. 9th Annual Chocolate Fest ?

Throughout the village of Ballston Spa | 4-8 p.m. Presented by the Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association. There will be 22 “sweet spots” around town where Ballston Spa businesses have paired up with area chocolatiers to compete to showcase their talents and tastes by preparing small, sample-sized chocolate offerings in 3 categories: Dessert (Sweet), Savory, and Chocolate Beverage. These treats will be judged by Chocolate-fest goers and only cost 1 dollar! A video presentation produced and narrated by GPS member Dave Waite on “Ballston Spa’s Mexican War Monument: The Village honors its fallen Sons.”  This 60-minute documentary tells the story of the monument and the year-long effort by members of the Ballston Spa community to retrieve its 175-year-old time capsule and honor the young men who gave their lives in this war. This video production takes you through the history of the war, the work of locating the time capsule, as well as providing thoughts about the war from local students and area historians. Messages From Survivors: One Family’s Holocaust Legacy ?

Clifton Park Halfmoon Public Library, 475 Moe Rd., Halfmoon | Month of February. The exhibit is built on 40 years of filming a family of Holocaust survivors in the Bronx, Miami, and a bungalow colony in the Catskills between 1962 and 2016. Six short videos introduce the Holocaust through powerful personal stories of a family of survivors. Six exhibit panels researched using the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s resources provide historical context for the video footage. The exhibit covers the family’s experiences from 1938 through the 21st century. Take-home cards keep the story alive once visitors return home. Each card contains stories of family members-some who survived and some who didn’t along with QR code links to the videos.

Knee-high Naturalist ?

10 – 11 a.m. | Geared toward children aged 2-5, (siblings welcome) Knee-high Naturalist is a fun introduction to nature. We meet in the Nature Center where we begin by reading a book or two and then take a short walk together outdoors, keeping our eyes open for animal tracks, shells, feathers, and other signs of the natural world around us. Light in the Darkness

7 p.m. | Christmas can be a painful time. The constant, inescapable refrain about the happiness of the season reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. Broken or lost relationships, employment and financial insecurity, poor health, depression–all of these can be more difficult as the nights lengthen and the cold intrudes. Recognizing that Christ came to comfort those who struggle with sadness and pain, First Presbyterian Church will host a community service of scripture, prayer, music, and candle lighting to invite God’s Word to shine light into our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church background (or no religious affiliation) is welcome.
