Campfire Chat with Sustainable Saratoga

Malta Spotlighter’s Theatre Troupe Auditions

Film:  Vischer Ferry, a Forgotten Crossroads

The film takes the audience through time, capturing each era of Vischer Ferry’s long history. Beginning with Native American occupation and the arrival of Dutch Families, the film’s focus on the Erie Canal is highlighted by a 1975 interview with John Wooden, the last lock tender along the local section of the canal. Other segments include a look at the Van Vranken family through the eyes of the 10th generation to grow up in Vischer Ferry, and the “Three Pillars” of the community today – the church, the fire company and the general store. 31st Annual Northeastern Woodworkers Showcase

The Rise and Fall of Ballston Spa as a Resort

Zoom presentation, 7 p.m. The Saratoga County History Center (SCHC) at Brookside Museum announces a virtual presentation by Theodore Corbett for the “Experts Next Door” series. After the Revolutionary War, the new nation’s earliest resorts were spas, following the tradition of those in England. Ballston Spa was one of the earliest and soon eclipsed its rivals in terms of springs, hotels, and amenities. New York City’s Nicholas Low was the most enterprising of the Spa’s developers. By the 1830s, however, Saratoga Springs’ resort had surpassed Ballston Spa, which continued, using its waterpower and railroad to establish the mills of the Industrial Revolution. The event is open to the public. It is free for SCHC members, and $5 for non-members. Pre-registration is required through the website www.brooksidemuseum.org.

Community Torah Project: Making Parchment from a Local Deerskin

Historian and Education Director at the Schoharie Crossing Historic Site David Brooks will present a talk on “DeWitt’s Duel”, exploring the life of DeWitt Clinton and the politics of early America and New York State. DeWitt Clinton was governor of New York State, a US Senator, and Mayor of New York City. He has been called the “Father of the Erie Canal” for his role in orchestrating the building of the Canal by some, while others called the project “Clinton’s Folly” or “Clinton’s Ditch”. David Brooks will explain how political wranglings and intrigue led to DeWitt’s Duel on the plains of Weehawken, New Jersey, across the river from New York City. Free and open to the public.

1 p.m. | Heritage Hunters – Daniel Bradt will present the program, “An Archaeological Look at the Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad.” The railroad was only the 2nd built in the state and began operating in 1832. A Night at the Aldridge House

9th Annual Chocolate Fest ?

Throughout the village of Ballston Spa | 4-8 p.m. Presented by the Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association. There will be 22 “sweet spots” around town where Ballston Spa businesses have paired up with area chocolatiers to compete to showcase their talents and tastes by preparing small, sample-sized chocolate offerings in 3 categories: Dessert (Sweet), Savory, and Chocolate Beverage. These treats will be judged by Chocolate-fest goers and only cost 1 dollar! While savoring delicious chocolate treats, visitors will also enjoy a variety of special business promotions going on throughout the Village. This year, there will also be various activities specifically for children occurring throughout town in addition to the treat sampling. Please note that most sweet spots are cash only.

11th Annual Chili Bowl Fundraiser ?

Closing Reception and Artist Talk

A video presentation produced and narrated by GPS member Dave Waite on “Ballston Spa’s Mexican War Monument: The Village honors its fallen Sons.”  This 60-minute documentary tells the story of the monument and the year-long effort by members of the Ballston Spa community to retrieve its 175-year-old time capsule and honor the young men who gave their lives in this war. This video production takes you through the history of the war, the work of locating the time capsule, as well as providing thoughts about the war from local students and area historians.
