She transcribed 30 special letters, part of a large collection of correspondence donated to the Museum by the Smith Family. Christine will talk about what she learned from the letters and about the resulting book entitled, Dear Friend: Letters from Union Soldier Gustavus Wintermeyer to John A. ‘The Masterpiece’

Saratoga Springs Booster Club Field Hockey Camp

 The Saratoga Springs Booster Club will be hosting its annual field hockey camp beginning on June 24 and ending on June 28 at Saratoga High School from 8 – 11 a.m. each day (except Monday- 5 -8 p.m.) on the turf.  The program is open to grades third through twelfth. No experience needed.   The camp includes extensive individual instruction along with daily participation in game situations.  The goal is to teach the fundamentals of field hockey, while ensuring that each player leaves the camp with a new appreciation for the game.  The camp brochure can be downloaded from the Booster Club’s website at www. Town of Milton’s 250th Revolutionary War Committee Ceremony

This event, taking place on June 29 at 11a.m., is to commemorate a sign honoring veterans of the Revolutionary War at Grenell Cemetery on Grenell Road. “Children of Peace” Documentary

Temple Sinai, 509 Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 7 p.m. Israeli Director Maayan Schwarz will join us for a discussion after the film. Maayan and his family grew up in Israel in the only community in the world where Palestinians and Israelis have chosen to live together. The village is called Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam, “oasis of peace,” a social experiment that became reality. The film explores the lives of children who grew up as best friends – but as adults, became aware of and lived with the daily, ongoing conflict around them between Israelis and Palestinians. This documentary was made before the crisis of October 7 but is more relevant now than ever as people discuss the future of this complex place. Advance registration is required. Genealogy and Local History

Town of Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St., Schuylerville | 1 p.m. Join Heritage Hunters and Joseph W. Zarzynski, a maritime archaeologist from Wilton and a former Social Studies teacher in the Saratoga Springs School District, who will be the speaker. He will tell the story of the 44 ft. long British warship that had been burned and then sank into Lake George during a 1757 French raid upon Fort William Henry. In 1903 it was raised and unceremoniously cut up for souvenirs. Zarzynski will examine its history, with photographs and the story of surviving and repurposed artifacts. The public is welcome. Four Seasons Lodge Panel Discussion

Zoom Program | 7 p.m. Saratoga Jewish Community Arts and the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York present a panel discussion of the documentary Four Seasons Lodge. A Veteran Speaks: Oscar Kemp of the 115th NY and the Grand Army

What happened to the survivors? What were their stories and how did they transition back into civilian life? Ben’s Bed: Recreating a Resting Place Fit for a General

Saratoga National Historical Park, Visitor Center, 648 Route 32, Stillwater | 6 p.m. Recent significant changes to the furnishings of the Neilson House were made to better reflect its appearance in the fall of 1777. It was determined that a folding camp bed was the perfect choice to represent the presence of General Benedict Arnold in his divisional headquarters. Support was offered by donors and the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield, and the process of finding craftspeople who could replicate the techniques and skill of their 18th century counterparts in recreating such a bed began. Join us to discover from the people involved how this project progressed from the archives to the workshop to the Neilson House! Downtown Ballston Spa | 4 – 7 p.m. Downtown Ballston Spa will come alive with the sights and sounds of local art displays and activities. The event is a collaboration between the BSBPA and the Ballston Spa Central School District. Visitors can expect to see artwork created by local students from pre-K to high school, on display in participating businesses throughout the downtown area. The Malta Ave Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team will be holding an ice cream fundraiser in Wiswall Park from 4:30-7 p.m., with all proceeds going towards their trip to World Finals in Ames, Iowa at the end of May. New Exhibits Opening Reception

Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa | 2-4 p.m. The Saratoga County History Center will officially open three new exhibits for the 2024 season to complement our main exhibit, Saratoga County our Home which opened in 2023. Brookside Through the Years in the front hallway examines the people and businesses that have called Brookside home throughout its 232-year history. In the Long Room gallery, visitors can explore images of Broadway storefronts from Saratoga Springs in the late 1860s and discover the history of the early entrepreneurs and which modern businesses are housed in the surviving buildings.  Another new exhibit, Unmentionables, invites visitors to consider the history of undergarments and displays petticoats, hoop skirts, shirts, stockings, bustles, and corsets from the museum’s extensive textile collection.

Sustainable Saratoga’s Urban Forestry Project will hold its 10th year of TREE TOGA planting event, adding an expected 35 large-growing shade trees to the urban forest. Volunteer Tree Planters get a lesson in tree planting before heading off in small teams. Once the trees are in the ground, Tree Host homeowners and other volunteers provide the care that is critical to tree survival and the success of Sustainable Saratoga’s mission to preserve and expand Saratoga’s urban forest. Northeastern Woodworkers Open House

NWA Herm Finkbeiner Learning Center, 97 Railroad Ave., Albany | 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Celebrate Arber Day by Joining NWA at the open house. Long after a tree comes down it continues to protect our environment and enrich our lives. Several years ago, one of those trees, a black walnut, which was planted by then Union College President Eliphalet Nott (1805-1866), sustained serious damage. Logs from that tree found their way to the Northeastern Woodworkers Association (NWA). Members milled and dried that log. Six months ago, using lumber from the 200-year-old tree, club members began construction of two trestle legged, live-edged tables. Both tables will be on display at the open house. Free Narcan Training 

Halfmoon Town Hall, 2 Halfmoon Town Plaza, Halfmoon | 4 – 6 p.m. The Town of Halfmoon in collaboration with the Saratoga County Department of Health and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office to offer a free lifesaving Narcan Training session. “Impression” Opening Reception

Vischer Ferry, A Forgotten Crossroads 

Vischer Ferry Firehouse, 360 Riverview Rd, Rexford | 7p.m. Video presentation of Vischer Ferry, A Forgotten Crossroads. The third in the Forgotten Crossroads series created by the History Center highlights Vischer Ferry, a quant village along the original path of the Erie Canal in the southern section of the Town of Clifton Park. The story is captured through interviews with three generations of residents, who shared their proud history and memories as well as their plans for the future.

Saipan: The Friction of War

Saratoga Town Hall at 12 Spring Street, Schuylerville | 7 p.m. The Old Saratoga Historical Association will host the multimedia presentation Led by World War II historian and retired US Army officer Patrick J. Chaisson. This discussion details one of the war’s most brutal and controversial battles. Saipan, located in the Mariana Islands of the Central Pacific, was an objective the Americans desperately needed to capture. Instead, it took six weeks of bloody, relentless fighting before Saipan’s Japanese defenders were defeated. This program is free to the public. Trivia Night

Anne’s Washington Inn 111 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 6 – 9 p.m. This event, hosted by Saratoga County History Center will support the programs of Brookside Museum. The event will include an Italian style buffet dinner generously provided by Mama Mia’s Restaurant, dessert, and coffee.  A cash bar for beer and wine will be available to our guests aged 21 and over.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will begin at 6 p.m.  Well-known local Trivia Night host Casey Blum, “That NY Trivia Guy” will open the friendly competition beginning at 7 p.m. Trivia categories will include questions on local history as well as the standard trivia topics. Town of Greenfield Historical Society Meeting

Town of Greenfield Community Center, 25 Wilton Rd., Greenfield Center | 7 p.m. 

Program: Ice Harvesting hosted by Tom Ragosta, President of the Watervliet Historical Society and Watervliet City Historian. The program will include a brief history of ice harvesting during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as well as the process used in storing natural ice. The program will include a display of various artifacts used in the ice harvesting process. The event is free and open to the public.
