Saratoga Film Showcase

Various location | Now in its second year, the weekend-long showcase on January 23 – 25 will feature 31 short films, nearly double last year’s lineup – with all but on filmmaker attending in person. The Saratoga Film Showcase offers a dynamic mix of film screenings, panels, live programming, and social gatherings designed to foster connection between artists and audiences. Book Sale

Chili Dinner

Monthly Indoor Craft and Garage Sale

Film: How to Save Democracy

Barn at Bassett House, 338 River Rd., Greenwich | 1 p.m. Saratoga Springs based filmmaker Michael Wayne’s 2025 feature documentary, How to Save Democracy. In the film, various democracy experts are interviewed; the people–Pulitzer Prize winners, journalists, authors, activists, constitutional scholars, and historians–all give depth and perspective on what it would take for the U.S. to realize the true promise of democracy. Love is the Greatest Force: The Theory and Practice of Nonviolent Resistance

Experts Next Door: Write, Fold, Seal: Letter Writing in the Victorian Age with Catherine Golden

Live on Zoom | 7 p.m. Long before e-mail, Facebook, and Instagram, letter writing was the only way to communicate. The recipient, not the sender, had to pay to receive a letter at the time of delivery. Postage rates in early Victorian Britain were so high that many people dreaded the postman’s knock. But all that changed in 1840 with the Penny Post. In this Zoom presentation, we will journey to Victorian England to learn about the first adhesive postage stamp, called the Penny Black, and a method for prepayment, which quickly became the model for other nations including the United States. Kristen will guide attendees step-by-step through the setup process and demonstrate how to borrow and enjoy digital materials including eBooks, audiobooks and more! Family Saturday: The Pillows Where We Rest gives participants the opportunity to explore the exhibition, discuss tools we use for rest, and create their own pillows from tote bags, ribbons, Velcro, and batting. Family Saturday programs emphasize creative cooperation through looking at artwork, discussing it, and engaging in a hands-on art activity. Snowshoe and Cross-Country Ski Rentals

Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park, 90 Scout Rd., Gansevoort | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Come get your rentals from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Welcome Cabin in Parking Lot #1. We will be open every Saturday and Sunday from January 3 to March 28. Rentals will be weather dependent, but the Welcome Cabin will always be open during these times. Additional days for rentals include Monday, January 19 and the school vacation week of February 16-20. All rentals must be returned by 4 p.m., last call is at 3 p.m. Don’t hibernate all winter! Get outside and explore the trails during the winter at Camp Saratoga! Rentals may be used only at Camp Saratoga. Rentals are $10/adults and $5/children and students. No registration required.

Two Vanished Villages

Galway Town Hall, 5910 Sacandaga Road, Galway | 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Galway Preservation Society Program, Jack and Jan McEneny will present ‘Two Vanished Villages’, the story of their personal searches for the villages where their respective ancestors lived.  Both families emerged from the Irish famine in County Mayo and immigrated to new homes at the “Glass Factory Village” near Lake Desolation in Saratoga County. Jack spent 19 years in the New York State Assembly and is currently Historian for Albany County. Film Casablanca Panel Discussion

Henry Knox Noble Train of Artillery

1 Van Schaick Ave., Cohoes | 10:30 a.m. Join us for the ceremonial linstock hand off from Saratoga 250 to Albany 250 in honor of the 250th anniversary to commemorate the formidable, fearless, and successful winter of the 1775 journey of Henry Knox and the patriots who delivered the vital cannon artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to the high ground above Boston Harbor that caused the British to leave the city. The public is invited to watch the procession go by and then follow it to the mansion grounds. The festivities include time to interact with the regimental interpreters accompanying the sleds and see the draft animals. There will also be an open house with 18th century refreshments, musket and cannon firing demonstrations and a dedication ceremony at Noon. The event is free.

Holiday Display

Saratoga Spa State Park Warming Hut | 4 – 6 p.m. The Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park are creating a holiday display at the Avenue of the Pines entrance and we need your help!  All are welcome to join us in decorating five trees with our handmade natural ornaments. The event will begin in the Warming Hut (parking available) where you can enjoy light refreshments and select one of the provided ornaments to place on a tree in the display. Genealogy and Local History Heritage Hunters

Town of Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St., Schuylerville | 1 p.m. Kathy Craine, a former National Park Service employee, will offer a visual walk-through of the immigration processing at Ellis Island with images from the National Archives, the Library of Congress and the National Park Service. Kathy will guide us through changes made to both the island and buildings to accommodate the flow of immigrants at the busiest port of entry in the United States. Operation Toy Train

101 Canty Rd., Greenfield | 2 p.m. Operation Toy Train will be arriving to Greenfield for an official kick-off to the holiday season and this year’s Greenfield “TOGether Gift Drive.” Santa & Mrs. Claus will be joined by Buddy the Elf, some local leaders and other friends on a Saratoga Corinth & Hudson holiday train. The event is free and should last approximately 45 minutes. Cocoa and cookies will be distributed and there will be plenty of opportunities to take photos. When the train arrives, a boxcar will open to reveal the local band Rustic Spirit and a short concert. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The Rise and Fall of Victory Mill

The obvious question is in an era before instant communication what was life like here? That question is for both those who were seasonal guests of the village and equally important, those who were year-round residents. Noted local author Hollis Palmer, will explore what it must have been like to spend the “season” or even a day at the spas. There will be special pricing on all six of Hollis’ books about Saratoga.
