Yaddo Open House

Yaddo Gardens, 312 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs | Various Times. Yaddo will host a public tour of its historic Mansion and grounds. Tours will be offered at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4 p.m., each lasting approximately 90 minutes. Guests will explore the Mansion’s first and second floors, West House, Greenhouse Studios, and Saratoga Studio. Tours will run rain or shine, covering varied outdoor terrain and indoor spaces, including stairs. Tickets range from $75–$85 depending on the time selected. All proceeds directly support residencies for artists shaping the future of literature, visual art, music, performance, and beyond. Volunteers are welcome to help bring this special event to life. Super Hero Science

The Children’s Museum at Saratoga, 65 S. Broadway, Suite 105, Saratoga Springs | Various Times. We’re teaming up with children’s museums across the country to celebrate Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play! At the Museum, that means Super Hero Science! The day will be full of playful opportunities for kids to imagine, explore, and create while discovering that learning can feel just as fun as play. We believe every child has unique “superpowers,” from curiosity to creativity to kindness, and this is a chance for families to celebrate those strengths together! 

Pollinator Picnic at the SoBro Triangle

 SoBro Triangle, Saratoga Springs | 11 a.m. Join us in celebrating this vibrant oasis in downtown Saratoga! Chinese Brush Painting 

Galway Public Library, 2112 East St., Galway | 11 a.m.  An Introductory Lesson in Chinese Brush Painting presented by Tari Lee.  Explore the art of Chinese Brush Painting and learn how the principles differ from Western painting.  Try your hand at making ink, using Chinese brushes, and creating a small painting to keep.  Tari Lee studied Chinese Brush Painting for 8 years in Taipei Taiwan with a Master Painter and will share her experiences with you.  This class is for teens and adults.  Space is limited; please register by calling 518-882-6385.

Children’s Book Launch & Reading

Canfield Casino, High Stakes Room, Congress Park, Saratoga Springs | 11 a.m. The Saratoga Springs History Museum is proud to announce a special reading and celebration of Saratoga ABCs: The Alphabet Book of Saratoga Springs, written and illustrated by local artist Lauren Magina. Saratoga ABCs is a beautifully illustrated children’s board book that takes young readers, and Saratoga enthusiasts of all ages, on an alphabetical journey through the rich history and beloved landmarks of Saratoga Springs. In addition to a live reading by the author, the event will feature a presentation by Museum Executive Director James Parillo, who will offer deeper historical context behind the sites and stories featured in the book. Museum fees will be waived from 10 a.m. – Noon on the day of the event.

Historical Encounters Tour

Grant Cottage, 1000 Mt. McGregor Rd., Wilton | Take this unique opportunity to experience Mount McGregor as it was in the Victorian Era. Meet characters from the past who will immerse you in their world as they bring to life the history of the mountain. Tour includes interaction with multiple historic characters on the historic site grounds, the historic cottage and the visitor center. Tours will run approximately 40-45 minutes. Spin Doctors Charity Benefit Concert

Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga, 683 Route 29, Saratoga Springs | 6 – 10 p.m.  This one-of-a-kind event brings together live music, local flavor, and lasting impact in the peaceful setting of our horse farm. Autumn Stroll – Historic Congress Park

Meet at the Brackett gates entrance to Congress Park | 10:30 a.m. Discover the historical significance of Saratoga Springs. The park’s sculptures and monuments commemorate prominent figures, and its development is intertwined with our city’s renowned springs. The motto of Health, Horses, and History is embodied in this place. During the tour, you will learn about the lives of John Morrissey, Spencer Trask, Edgar Brackett, and Ellen Hardin Walworth. You may discover hidden treasures that you have passed by daily without noticing. All Sunday morning tours last approximately 90 minutes and requires walking and standing on varied terrain. Meet the brave and adventurous souls whose unquenchable thirst for exotic plants took them at great personal risk to remote areas in Asia, Africa, South America, and beyond. Their spellbinding stories changed landscapes forever. The dedication of the James Mann Victorian Shade Garden will follow. Fourth Annual Public History Awards

Greenridge Cemetery Tour

Greenridge Cemetery, Lincoln Avenue, Saratoga Springs | 1 – 2:30 p.m. The Saratoga County History Center has announced an additional walking tour to conclude our 2025 season.  Experienced tour guide Gloria Marceau will lead a fall walkabout of the Greenridge Cemetery on Lincoln Avenue in Saratoga Springs. This tour is focused on Civil War veterans and their stories and will include a ghostly tale appropriate for the season.  Attendees will meet at the Lincoln Avenue gate.  Registration is required.

Writing in Nature Workshops

5th Annual Saratoga Book Festival

Various Locations throughout Saratoga Springs | October 2–5.  This four-day celebration will bring together more than 50 authors and presenters for conversations, performances, panels, and family fun—across downtown Saratoga Springs. Most events are free and open to the public. The festival also features special live music performances, panels on AI, highlights like KidZone with crafts and readings, a Jane Austen tribute at Caffe Lena featuring teatime celebration, Genre Panels ranging from crime to fantasy to historical fiction and Home Inspiration. Art of Remembering: Indigenous Language Reclamation & Regional History

Ghosts of Saratoga Trolley Tour

2 starting points: The Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, 297 Broadway or The Saratoga Springs History Museum, Congress Park | 7 – 8:30 p.m. This 90-minute tour blends history, folklore, and the paranormal for an unforgettable fall evening. Guests will ride the trolley through Saratoga’s most storied streets, hearing ghostly accounts documented by renowned ghost hunter David Pitkin and other investigators. Heritage Hunters

Alcohol Ink Art Demonstration

From the Ground Up: How Responsible Metal Detecting Connects Us to Local History

Brookside Museum 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa | 7 – 8:30 p.m. Join us for an engaging and informative talk that delves into the fascinating world of metal detecting, a hobby that connects us directly to the past. Over the last 8 years, local detectorist Brandon Dingeman has traversed Saratoga County and beyond, bringing to light incredible stories through relics hidden just beneath our feet. In this session, you will learn the fundamentals of responsible metal detecting, including the “golden rules” for ethical detecting, essential equipment and site strategy. We’ll explore the critical role of historical research and the use of digital tools to find sites of interest and record crucial situational context of items found. All These Growing Things

The Tang Museum, Skidmore College, 815 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, 3 – 8 p.m. An open house and public reception. This is a yearlong exhibition of contemporary and historical paintings, prints, textiles, photography, and sculpture from the Tang Museum collection that explores questions of becoming and belonging.  The exhibition raises compelling questions about how we experience and understand the world—now and in the future. Many of the works on view are recent acquisitions that are being exhibited at the museum for the first time. Free admission, no reservations required.

NatureFest

What We Do for One Another: Death and Jewish Ritual

Galway Preservation Society Meeting

Galway Town Hall, 5910 Sacandaga Road, Galway | Doors open at 6:45. A brief member meeting at 7 p.m. followed by a program. The Galway Movie Club was formed in 1937 by the faculty of Galway High School and other nearby rural schools. They produced several films in the ensuing years about local daily life, farming, church, quilting, scenes of Galway Lake, camps, local sporting activities and historical events in Galway’s past.  Galway Preservation Society has digitized these reels in its archives into two films.  The program this month will be the debut of the digitized compilation of the first movie, narrated by Galway Historian Darby Knizek-Neahr. Seneca Ray Stoddard and Jesse Wooley: Kindred Spirits  

Brookside Museum 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa | 7 p.m. Dr. Way, retired primary care physician from Glens Falls, and Stoddard’s great great nephew, will, through many examples of their photographs, discuss the careers of the well-known, Saratoga County born photographers, Stoddard and Wooley, and examine what little is known about the connections between them. Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series

Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., Saratoga Spring | Noon – 1 p.m. “A Veteran Speaks: Oscar Kemp of the 115th NY and Grand Army”. The Civil War is one of the most studied conflicts in American history, but much of the emphasis is on battles, leaders, and soldiers during the four years of war. What happened to the survivors? What were their stories, and how did they transition back into civilian life?  Many of the veterans joined fraternal organizations for support, the largest being the Grand Army of the Republic. Join Civil War veteran Oscar Kemp (portrayed by relative and Grant Cottage staff member Ben Kemp) as he recounts his war experiences with the 115th NY and then discusses the experience of veterans after the war and the Grand Army of the Republic. “Thank You, Mom” Book Signing

Northshire Bookstore, 424 Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 6 p.m. Jerry Crouth, local Fun FM 93.3 radio DJ will present his new book, “Thank You, Mom”: My Life’s Stories Growing Up in the Forties. The book pays tribute to Crouth’s mother, who brought up young Jerry and his five older siblings after his father was permanently hospitalized in Marcy Mental Hospital one month before Jerry’s birth. The book acts as a testament to the strength the family found in each other, and includes memoirs written by the author’s mother. Summer Sunday Stroll: Historic West Side

Meet at the entrance of Gideon Putnam Burying Ground, located on South Franklin Street, Saratoga Springs| 10:30 a.m. – Noon. George DeMers leads the season’s final Summer Sunday Stroll. Explore the diverse historic West Side neighborhood where Saratoga Springs’ Irish and Italian immigrants and Black community lived. The tour will highlight the settlement of this neighborhood, its rebirth as an arts district, and the rehabilitations that took place in the early 2000s. In addition to highlighting the historic architecture of this area, George will discuss the history of its residents, restaurants, stores, and clubs as well as the impacts of Urban Renewal and revitalization efforts.  The cost is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. Fifth Annual Lemonade Stand Benefit

30th Annual Turning Point Parade and Festival

Broad St., Schuylerville | 1 – 2:30 p.m. Enjoy a parade with small-town charm featuring over 100 units, including marching bands, fire and rescue teams, law enforcement, reenactors, and military groups. The route follows Broad Street. The Turning Point Festival runs through August 9. Travel back to Revolutionary Saratoga with 12-year-old Nathaniel. Living in his family’s tavern, he overhears exciting, worrying – and sometimes confusing – talk about freedom and big changes coming to his town. This graphic novel, illustrated by Alex Portal, brings Saratoga’s Revolutionary story to life for young readers. After the reading there will be a book signing with the author and the book will be available for purchase.

Heritage Hunters 

Town of Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St., Schuylerville | 1 p.m. Bobbi Reno, historian for the town of East Greenbush, will present the program “The Illegal Execution of Pvt. Samuel Helms.” Samuel Helms, stationed in Ulster County during the War of 1812, was arrested and charged with desertion in 1813 and brought to the U. S. Army post, the Greenbush Cantonment, to face a court martial. His execution took place later in 1813. Bobbi’s 15-year research shows that he should only have been charged with going AWOL. She is determined to have his name cleared and to locate his grave. Public is welcome. For information call 518-885-9309.

Frances Day 2025

Tang Museum, Skidmore College, 815 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 2 p.m. Celebrate the Tang’s 25th anniversary at our annual summer open house with art, artmaking, tours, music, food and more. Summer Garden Program: The Victorian Fascination with Plants

Tradition in Ink: The Art of Rabbi Linda Motzkin

Temple Sinai, 509 Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 3 – 5 p.m. Rabbi Linda Motzkin is one of a handful of women in the world trained as a Hebrew scribe, a role traditionally reserved for men. She is unique among female scribes in that she is the only one who makes her own parchment. Rabbi Motzkin will discuss how she repurposes pieces of parchment into original works, incorporating Hebrew calligraphy drawn from Jewish sacred texts, including the Bible. She also will explain her specific process for making these pieces. Several of her artworks will be available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Temple Sinai. 2025 Grand, Gilded, and Glorious: A Saratoga Stroll Walking Tour Season

Community Compost Workshop and Tour

Ulysses S. Grant Reflects

Grant (portrayed by Dr. Curt Fields) as he looks back on his incredible life and career during his last days on Mt. McGregor. Find out how the support of fellow veterans, a grateful nation, and his loving family made a difference as he raced death to finish his Memoirs for the sake of his family. As part of our Literary Landmark Author Series Dr. Fields will be signing copies of Grant at 200: Reconsidering the Life and Legacy of Ulysses S. Grant and his recently published book Unconditional Surrender: Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War.

Concert in the Park

Twelve Years a Widow

Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa | 7 p.m. Join Yale historian and Middlebury College teacher, Connor Williams, as he sheds some light on the story of Anne, not only about her life, but also about the challenges of uncovering that story. Anyone who has done historical research knows the difficulties in tracking down the stories of women, particularly working-class women, and especially women of color. The story of Anne Hampton Northup is remarkable. A much sought after cook, she was born free in Washington County and is best known for being the wife of Solomon Northup, who was kidnapped in 1841 and subsequently enslaved for twelve years. But who was Anne, and how did she manage as a single woman, bringing up three children, for twelve years until her husband’s return?
