The Grand Hotels of Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Senior Center, 290 West Ave., Saratoga Springs | 10 a.m. Presented by Charlie Kuenzel.  Saratoga was the number one tourist destination in the United States in the 1800’s. The city was the playground of the rich and famous during the summer months. The Grand Hotels were the social apex for the rich and famous. This presentation will discuss the physical aspects of hotels as well as the social enjoyment they provided during the Gilded Age.

National Poetry Month – Open Mic Coffee House

14th Tree Toga 

Pitney Meadows Community Farm, 223 West Ave., Saratoga Springs | 9 – 9:30 a.m. Sustainable Saratoga’s Urban Forestry Project will hold its 14th Tree Toga planting event, adding an expected 40 large-growing shade trees to Saratoga’s urban forest. Volunteer tree planters will meet at the farm to get a lesson in tree planting before heading off in small teams to their assigned locations across the city. Care for your Cemetery Day

The Ballston Spa Village Cemetery, 130 Ballston Ave., (Garrett Rd., entrance), Ballston Spa | 9 a.m. The cemetery is participating in the statewide program to solicit volunteers to help clean up their hometown cemeteries. Tasks include raking, brush cutting, trimming, seeding, etc. Volunteers are urged to bring gloves, rakes, clippers, loppers, shovels, etc. Also, there are many flush mounted veteran’s markers that are partially covered with sod or soil. Big Truck Day

SPAC Parking Lot, Rt 50, Saratoga Springs | 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Big Truck Day is The Children’s Museum at Saratoga’s biggest fundraiser of the year. During the event, children are welcome to explore all of the big shiny trucks. Some of them will allow the children to go inside and even honk the horn. There will be ice cream, snow cones, barbecue, cotton candy, lemonade, nacho, and coffee vendors on site. Pets are not recommended to attend, but allowed. Service dogs always welcome. This event is loud and may be stressful to your pet. Tickets are $7 to prepurchase online, $8 at the event. Visit www.cmssny.org. 

10th Annual Antique Outboard Swap Meet

Schrader and Company Parking Lot, 850 Saratoga Rd., Burnt Hills | 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Featuring Buy/Sell/Trade, advice from members, parts sources, continental breakfast (for a donation), lunch (nearby restaurants), motor displays, membership information, judging for oldest motor and best restoration. Free admission, great family-oriented event. No vendor fees, display or sell for no charge. Open to the public. Spring Fling Vendor Pop-up Shop 

Greenfield Community Center, 25 Wilton Road, Greenfield Center |9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Town of Greenfield Lions Club is hosting this free event. Open to the public. The Greenfield Lions will be selling fresh baked goods, homemade soups, chili and coffee. There will be multiple local vendors inside and out.

Annual Birthday Party for Horses

Old Friends at Cabin Creek (Bobby Frankel Division), 483 Sand Hill Road, Greenfield Center | Noon – 3 p.m.  Come meet the 16 quarter horses – 16 thoroughbreds and “Patrick,” the 38-year-old quarter horse, for a family-friendly afternoon. Among the residents is Commentator, a two-time winner of the prestigious Whitney Stakes and has a race named in his honor.  That race will be held on Wednesday, June 4 as part of the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga Race Course. Olde Bryan Inn, Triangle Diner, Village Pizzeria, PDT Maison and John Manganelli have donated soups for guests to enjoy as they stroll with volunteer guides to visit “The Boys.” The suggested donation is $10. Genealogy and Local History

The Syrian Bride Film Discussion

Zoom | 7 p.m. Sponsored by Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, a panel discussion of the powerful film The Syrian Bride. The 2004 Israeli and Arab film is loosely based on a 1998 border-crossing incident in the demilitarized zone between Israel’s Golan Heights and Syria. Beyond its political overtones, the film presents the personal and psychological limits faced by women in traditional societies. Dunkerley Dialogue with Penny Arcade and Joseph Cermatori

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, 815 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 6 p.m. Dunkerley Dialogues pair Skidmore professors with artists in a conversation format, which is often a catalyst for new connections and understandings across disciplines, and can spark new ideas for all participants. Penny Arcade, aka Susana Ventura, is a legendary performance artist who was a teenage superstar for Andy Warhol’s Factory, featured in the film Women In Revolt. Earth Week Screening: Roots So Deep

The Heritage Garden Club is a nonprofit garden club devoted to promoting flowers and plants, and civic improvements throughout Saratoga Springs. Guest speaker will be Wendy Mahaney, longtime former volunteer of Sustainable Saratoga, presenting a program on, “Lose the Lawn – Create a Pollinator Paradise.”  The meeting is open to the public. Brookside Museum Celebrated 50 Years 

Greenfield Community Center, 25 Wilton Rd., Greenfield Center | 7 p.m. Presented by Dave Waite in November of 2024, Saratoga County History Center celebrated this milestone with the video “Bringing History to Life: Fifty Years of Brookside Museum.” which presents the story of the museum through the words of those who have been involved, both since the beginning and into today. Dave Waite will be showing this twenty-five minute video at the meeting.  Come at 6:30 p.m. and go to the Town Hall to see the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal display. Display will be there through April 18 during regular Town Hall hours.

Film: How to Save Democracy

Saratoga Springs based filmmaker Michael Wayne recently completed a feature documentary, How to Save Democracy. In the film, he interviewed various democracy experts, all knowledgeable on democracy and the issues facing the U.S. in the present day. The people–Pulitzer Prize winners, journalists, authors, activists, constitutional scholars, and historians–all give depth and perspective on what it would take for the U.S. to realize the true promise of democracy. The film includes archival images and footage from the 19th and 20th centuries. Free admission.

Heritage Hunters Meet 

Town of Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St. in Schuylerville | 1 p.m. “A Hudson Valley Reckoning:  Discovering the Forgotten History of Slaveholding in My Dutch American Family” is the story of journalist Debra Bruno’s Greene County ancestors. Learning that her Dutch ancestors had been some of the most entrenched slavers in a 200-year period in New York State, Debra knew she had to tell the story. She met Eleanor Mire, descended from the people her Coxsackie family enslaved. Ladies Nordic Ski Lesson and Lunch

Kurt is an ecosystem scientist with more than 30 years of experience in forest and soil science.
