Full Moon Winter Party

Brookhaven Winter Park, 333 Alpine Meadows Rd., Greenfield | 6 p.m. This is a fundraiser for the park. The $10 cost overs the cost of a cocktail of your choice at the bonfire from The View Restaurant. Guests will walk, snowshoe or ski along a lit path to a large bonfire on the golf course. Snowshoe and ski rentals are available the night of the event at our ski shop. The fun conti8nues after with live music and specials at The View Restaurant. No registration is required. Brookhaven Winter Park is the Town of Greenfield’s free Nordic ski and snowshoe park. This year the park added a winter rental and gift shop, Thursday through Sundays. Guests may rent both Nordic skis or snowshoes on a first-come, first-serve basis. The park features seven cross-country trails and two snowshoe loops, a total of 20 kilometers of trails.

By making a $2.50 community bag purchase, shoppers give a $1.00 back to a local nonprofit selected monthly by store leadership at 95 Weible Ave. location. Founded in 1992, the Academy is a nonprofit, membership organization whose members share a love of learning. A self-funded entity, A.L.L. is designed to offer lifelong learning and comradery among seniors. A.L.L. offers spring, fall and winter courses, Special Interest Groups, (SIGs) and special events that are held throughout the year. Southern Saratoga County Art Exhibits

SSAS will be hosting Art Exhibits throughout the area. The Clifton Park Senior Community Center Gallery, 6 Clifton Common Blvd., will show a “Gentlemen’s Art Exhibit” featuring artists and members of SSAS, Brian Skanes, David Mayack, Frank Coletta, John Morrette and William Daisak during the months of January and February 2025. Mechanicville Library, 190 N. Main Street, will show the artwork of SSAS member and artist, Jane Morrison, during the month of January 2025.   Stop in and view these amazing artists. MLK Saratoga’s Annual Dr. King Celebration Weekend

The weekend kicks off Friday, January 17. This year’s theme is inspired by a 1967 speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave in Atlanta, GA. titled “Where Do We Go from Here?” Friday night Kickoff Party – a free evening of food, music and performances, hosted by Emcee Bakari Grady-Willis. There will be workshops, children’s programming, a Sunday Gospel service, exploring Restorative Justice, film screening and a special tribute to Odetta by Gina Coleman and Misty Blues at Caffè Lena, volunteer projects, and Monday afternoon’s Community Celebration, featuring a keynote address by author and Skidmore professor Dr. Tammy Owens, with inspirational music by Soulist Garland Nelson. Winter Concert Series: String Theory Trio

The String Theory Trio is a newly formed ensemble comprised of three friends, Brian Mooney, Dana Probeyahn-Smith, and Kathryn Tomlin who recently began exploring the repertoire that exists for two violins and a cello. They will be performing in the Long Room at The Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa, on Saturday, January 18 at 3 p.m. The concert is open to the public and free, though donations are always appreciated, either online or at the event.

Prepare for Planting 2025 ReLeaf Workshop

Saratoga County 4-H Training Center, 556 Middleline Rd., Ballston Spa | 8:30 a.m. Check-In, Program begins at 9 a.m. Join the Eastern Adirondack ReLeaf Committee on January 22 for a half-day workshop on how to plan for your planting project. Attendees will learn how to find funding for planting projects, engage communities in planting trees, plant the right tree in the right place, and more. Program speakers are Christina McLaughlin – NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Duane Dickinson – National Grid and Caroline Rothaug – Sustainable Saratoga. America 250: The Ballston Connection 

A Documentary – A committee representing the Town of Ballston, Saratoga County has produced a documentary celebrating the Town’s role in the history of the American Revolution. “America 250: The Ballston Connection” will be screened at the Ballston Community Library, 2 Lawmar Lane, Burnt Hills at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 23. The program is free and open to all. It’s an opportunity to learn about the local heroes and, yes, the villains, of Revolutionary times!

Cloaks and Greatcoats – 18th Century Outerwear

Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave. Ballston Spa | 7 p.m. Join well known historical clothing expert, Henry Cooke, to learn how people kept warm in the 18th century and view original and replica garments. Learn about capes, cloaks and greatcoats in the late 1700s. By looking at original and replica garments, as well as artwork from the era, participants will discover the materials, construction techniques and fashionable styles of outerwear for men and women. The event is free and open to the public, though donations are always welcome. (In case of inclement weather, please check with Brookside Museum). This event has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of the 24th Regiment of Foot in North America and is supported by the Campaign for Saratoga 250, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to highlighting the importance of the Saratoga Region during the American Revolution.

Santa’s Playland

Quick Response Restoration, 2077 Route 9, Round Lake | 5 – 11 p.m. Drive through our magical holiday lights display featuring hundreds of dazzling, animated light displays, set to cheerful holiday music, right from the comfort of your car. Open to the public Wednesday – Sunday. The last day for this season will be on Sunday, January 5. Admission is free.

Library Visits the Farmers Market

Poetry Reading

Caffe Lena, 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs | 7 p.m.  Caffè Lena will present a poetry reading by Susan Oringel. An open mic poetry reading will follow. For the month of January, Gateway House of Peace, located at 479 Rowland Street has been selected. GHOP is an organization that provides 24-hour care to individuals who have been diagnosed to have three months or less to live and can no longer stay safely in their home. GHOP receives no public funding or insurance reimbursements and relies on community support and fundraising.

The Mural Opening

The Children’s Museum, 65 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 4 – 5:30 p.m. Join us on December 28 at The Children’s Museum for the exciting opening of our vibrant new mural, featuring a fun array of aquatic animals! To celebrate, we’ll host a hands-on workshop where you can create flying fish lanterns using paper bags, guided by the talented Frank Lombardo. Enjoy complimentary water, fish crackers, and seaweed snacks while learning about the artistic journey behind the mural. We’ll also share the life story of Ed Koch, the artist who hand-carved and painted the 200+ wooden fish hanging in our hall. Don’t miss the slideshow showcasing the making of the mural!

Annual Mitten Tree

Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, 297 Broadway, Saratoga Springs | Warm Hands and hearts. Our mitten tree is in need of donations of new and handmade hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, socks and winter wear. All items hung on our tree will be donated to local charitable organizations for distribution to those who need a little help staying warm this winter. Donations will be accepted through January 4, 2025.

Tea and Talk: Historic Holidays 

Galway Public Library, 2112 East Street, Galway | 3 p.m. An adult program presented by Charlene DuBuque, Education Director of Brookside Museum.  Come hear about ways that Saratoga County residents have celebrated holidays in the past.  Participants are encouraged to share their own memories of holidays that are important to them.  Tea and light refreshments will be served.  Registration is requested, but not required, at 518-882-6385.

Holiday Hints for Caregivers: Managing the Busy Holiday Season

The holidays are a time for family togetherness and memories but can also be a time filled with stress and sadness for the person living with dementia and his or her caregiver. Free Talk – Physical Therapy in Knee Arthritis and Replacement

Genealogy and Local History

Town of Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St., Schuylerville | 1 p.m. Heritage Hunters will meet  for a program presented by Jack and Jan McEneny titled, “Two Vanished Villages.” They will share their personal searches for the villages where their ancestors lived. Both families emerged from the Irish famine that gripped County Mayo and made new homes at the “Glass Factory Village” near Lake Desolation in Saratoga County. Canadian Pacific Kansas City Holiday Train

The Holiday Train is back on the rails, bringing holiday joy and supporting local food banks across North America. Franklin Community Center has been selected as the local beneficiary for the Saratoga Springs stop at Saratoga Springs Train Station, 26 Station Lane. The event will take place on Monday, November 24 at 7:20 p.m., which is free to attend. Live performances by James Barker Band and Clerel, offering festive entertainment for the whole family. Enjoy complimentary hot chocolate, sponsored by B&B Plumbing and Heating, along with cookies and candy canes. Donations of non-perishable food or cash are encouraged.

Saratoga Turkey Trot

This Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, the Christopher Dailey Foundation will host their 23rd Annual Christopher Dailey 5K Saratoga Turkey Trot. The Run/Walk will be held on Broadway in Saratoga Springs starting at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds from the event will support the Christopher Dailey Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting youth needs in the Saratoga Community since 2002. The Town of Greenfield will hold a “Sip & Shop” event at Brookhaven Golf Course, 333 Alpine Meadows Rd., from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on November 30. 2024 Winter Photography & Hiking Series

Led by Saratoga nature photographer Louis Valenti. This series of photo hikes is open to beginner photographers and will explore the uniqueness and beauty of the Geyser Creek trail. The Photo Hikes will begin on Sunday, December 1, and will be held every Sunday through December 22, 2024, from 10:30AM – 12:00PM. Each hike will provide photographic opportunities and will introduce participants to key fundamentals of photographing nature. All hikes will depart at 10:30AM from the SPAC parking lot, section A. Veterans Day Commemoration and Family Fun Day

Saratoga National Historical Park, 648 NY 32, Stillwater | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a ceremony honoring those who have served from the earliest American veterans in the Revolutionary War to today. This short ceremony will include speakers and a moment to remember those who are no longer with us. Following the ceremony, representatives of veteran’s services, organizations, and local military units will be on hand to provide information and celebrate. Refreshments and family friendly activities will continue until 2:00 pm. Movement Workshop and Performance of Vignettes from the Nutcracker

From Malta to the Moon: The Rocket Test Station

Brookside Museum 21 Fairground Ave. Ballston Spa, 7 – 8:30 p.m. Paul Perreault, former Town of Malta Historian, will use images and video clips to tell the story of how and why Luther Forest in the Town of Malta was selected to begin America’s space program. Developed almost 75 years ago by the Federal government in collaboration with General Electric, this rocket test facility is in our own backyard and remnants still exist today. This event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Pomeroy Foundation and the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). She will also discuss the work being done in the county to commemorate the veterans and reveal a few fascinating stories of these Revolutionary War Patriots.
