Ski & Snowboard Movie Benefit: 75

Trombley Auditorium, Maple Avenue, Middle School, 515 Maple Ave., Saratoga Springs | 7 p.m. Alpine Sport Shop in Saratoga Springs will host Warren Miller’s New Ski & Snowboard Movie 75, which celebrates 75 years of ski movies! Tickets are $15 purchased in store, in person at Alpine Sport Shop, 321 Clinton St. Saratoga Springs and $20 at the door, the night of the event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.  All profits will benefit Saratoga High School Alpine Ski Team and Double H Ranch Adaptive Winter Sports Program.

Annual Fall Artisan Sale

Barn at the Bridge, Lake Hill Rd., Burnt Hills | 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Barn at the Bridge is hosting our annual Fall Artisan Sale. Bring the whole family- we have food trucks, live music, farm animals, and 30 + vendors. This curated event features true craftmanship and spotlights so much local talent. Come see familiar faces and many new vendors. Shop for the Holidays and support your local Artisans. The event continues on Sunday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. 

Gem & Mineral Show

Knights of Columbus, 50 Pine Rd., Saratoga Springs | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Eight local mineral, fossil and jewelry dealers will be on hand. Shop for rocks, minerals, gems, fossils, handmade jewelry, metaphysical stones, and more. Admission $5, children under 12 and Scouts in uniform are free when accompanied by an adult. The event continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Fallback 5 Mile Trail Race

Saratoga Spa State Park, 19 Roosevelt Dr., Saratoga Springs | 10 a.m. It’s that time of year! Set your clocks back, fall back in bed for that extra hour, and emerge bright-eyed and bushy tailed, ready to breathe crisp, autumn air and tackle some serious trails in historic Saratoga Spa State Park. The Fallback 5 Mile Trail Racecourse is a combination of hills, ridges, and single track, with a few wide trails, paved sections, and grassy areas, showcasing sections of the park some may have never seen before. This is nature’s original obstacle course at its finest. (There is even a stair climb on a section near SPAC.) Registration and early bib pick up, in person on Saturday, November 2 from Noon – 2 p.m. at iRun Local, 425 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, pre-register fee is $30 (cash or check only). Last minute registration 8:30 – 9:30 on race day, fee is $35.

Galway Preservation Society Meeting 

Galway Town Hall, 5910 Sacandaga Road, Galway | Doors open at 6:45 p.m., followed by this month’s program at 7 p.m. on the American Revolution. This month we shall see a newly released documentary celebrating America’s 250th birthday.  This video focuses on the local area and was created by Ballston Town Historian Rick Reynolds, the film’s director, and Galway resident and videographer Dave Waite.  Both Rick and Dave plan to be in attendance to answer questions after the presentation.  Our programs are open to the public, free of charge.  Annual family or household memberships are available for $10 per year.  Please join us to learn more about America’s history.

Annual Election Day Chili Feast

The Malta Ridge Methodist Church, 729 Malta Avenue Extension, Malta Ridge | 11:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. The menu will feature chili, tossed salad, hard rolls, and homemade cookies.   Eat-in or take-out is available.  Donation is $10. Poetry Reading 

Caffè Lena, 47 Phila St., Saratoga Springs | Sign ups 6:30 p.m. Caffè Lena will present a poetry reading by Joseph Bruchac. An open mic poetry reading will follow. The readings will start at 7 p.m. The host for the event will be Carol Graser and the cost is $5 general, free for students. The featured reading will also be livestreamed. The CCC in Saratoga County and the Adirondacks

Online Zoom Event | 7 – 8:30 p.m. Join Marty Podskoch, historian and author, as he discusses the role and legacy of the CCC in our area. The Civilian Conservation Corps began under President Roosevelt’s New Deal to relieve the poverty and unemployment of the Depression. There were over 200 CCC camps in New York State, including one locally in Stillwater, from where men worked developing Saratoga Battlefield as an historic site. A Zoom link will be sent out within 24 hours of the start. This event is free for members. The event is open to the public. It is free for SCHC members, and $5 for non-members. Washington’s Wartime Cooks

Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center, 648 NY 32, Stillwater | 6:30 p.m. Although there is only one “Washington’s Headquarters” in New York, there are numerous signs around the region stating, “Washington slept here.” Which means he also ate there. Typically, however, not food prepared by the household’s cook, but by his own staff, led by Hannah Till, an enslaved woman, and her husband Isaac. Who were they? What skills may they have had? Join us as we look at current research on Hannah & Isaac and ponder what it may have been like to travel and cook around the region for Washington. Ballston Spa Zoning Meeting

Cornell Cooperative Extension Auditorium, 50 West High St., Ballston Spa | 7 p.m. The Village of Ballston Spa Zoning Advisory Committee will hold the meeting to discuss their recommendations on changes to the Village Zoning Code. The meeting agenda will focus on zoning recommendations for mobile homes, condos, flood maps and flood insurance. The public is welcome to attend in person or5 through the Zoom link posted on the Village’s website at www.ballstonspa.gov.

Haunted Saratoga Ghost Tours

Come walk with us and hear the stories of Haunted Saratoga. Hear the stories that have lived on in our city for hundreds of years. They will enchant, entertain, and perhaps even scare you. Our 90-minute-long walking tour will take you in search of the countless ghosts rumored to haunt the city. Total walking distance is less than a mile, covered at a very leisurely pace so that you can enjoy Saratoga’s many infamous ghosts and haunted locations. ZOMBIE ZIPS – A NIGHT OF TERROR

Mountain Ridge Adventure, 300 Weatherwax Rd., Schenectady. Your nightmare begins with a corpse-guided tour along a serial killer infested forest to then be hauled into the trees among complete, utter horror. Once in the trees you will be launched in complete darkness … alone, afraid and vulnerable … along a screaming steel cable hundreds of feet along Mountain Ridge Adventure’s awesome Zip Line Park. Are you wondering what comes out at night in the corn maze? Stop by and enter our Field of Screams Friday and Saturday nights in October to find out! You will never experience anything quite like the Field of Screams! Every twist and turn in the maze will hold a new surprise for you. As you navigate your way thru the corn maze, with just a flashlight to light your way, anticipation and fear will build inside of you. There are demons and ghouls around every bend…masked men with chainsaws following behind you…haunted buildings within the maze to pass thru…and many more surprises that will make you laugh and cry. NIGHTMARES AT LIBERTY RIDGE FARM

At Nightmares at Liberty Ridge Farm, you will find a variety of haunted attractions, all full of the scariest monsters and creepiest creatures you can dream up. Each attraction is scarier than the one before, and they’re sure to leave everyone who enters trembling with fear. Featuring multiple haunted attractions for the price of one! FIELD OF HORRORS

Located at 100 Farrell Rd., Troy. Field of Horrors offers several different attractions for the price of one! Check out Return of Mummy’s Curse, The Crypt, Insanity, Condemned Manor, and more, including the “Walking Trail of Terror.” Field of Horrors is not recommended for children under 10. Strobe lights are in use throughout the premises. All fog machine liquid is water based. This is not a handicap accessible facility. Each wagon has a narrator on board to guide the way through the darkness. Around each and every corner there’s a frightful scene and behind each and every tree lurks an uninvited guest waiting for you! ANNUAL ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW FUNDRAISER

Get ready to do the time warp once more! RISE Housing and Support Services is thrilled to announce the third annual Rocky Horror Picture Show fundraiser happening on Friday, October 25, at 6 p.m., at the Universal Preservation Hall, 125 Washington St., Saratoga Springs. This year, the venue will once again transform into a scene straight out of Dr. Frank N. Furter’s mansion, as attendees enjoy a unique and interactive viewing of the cult classic film. The event begins with a special VIP cocktail hour, complete with passed hors d’oeuvres and food stations provided by The Adelphi, an open bar, and live music by Stretch. Haunted Railbike Weekend 

Revolution Rail Co. (Rev Rail) is excited to announce its Haunted Railbike Weekend from October 25 – 27, 2024, in North Creek. Combining eerie Halloween thrills with community support, this unique railbike event will benefit Operation Adopt a Soldier, a Saratoga County nonprofit that aids active-duty soldiers. A portion of the Haunted Railbike Weekend proceeds will be donated to the charity, and riders who bring three non-perishable items for care packages will receive a 10% off coupon for a railbike ride in 2025. ANNUAL HAUNTED HOUSE FOR CHARITY

The Fraternal Order of Eagles #2486’s Annual Haunted House is back on Friday, October 25, 6 -10 p.m. and Saturday, October 26 from 5 – 10 p.m. at 80 Main St., South Glens Falls.  Admission is free but donations are encouraged to help local charities and families in need. Don’t be a Scaredy Cat, bring your friends and family for a scary good time! 

STILLWATER FALL FETIVAL

Saturday, October 26, Noon – 4 p.m. Various locations in Stillwater. Walk through the Village while trick-or-treating and playing games for free! Some organizations have food, some have snacks, all have the goodies! Make sure to come in costume and bring your crowd-friendly animals too! Haunted firehouse, Trunk-or-Treat, and so much more!

TRUNK & TREATS

A free event hosted at the F. Donald Myers Education Center in Saratoga Springs, October 26, 2 – 5 p.m. Trucks from local businesses will roll down to the education center at 15 Henning Road in Saratoga Springs, gather in the parking lot and give out treats to the public. Additional food items will be available for purchase. Back hoes, excavators, dump trucks, cement trucks, ladder truck, tow plow and tractor trailers will be some of the many types of trucks on display. Annual Boo2You Halloween Festival

Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. Children and their grown-ups are encouraged to attend in costume to trick-or-treat and enjoy the festivities. This event is rain or shine, unless the weather is unsafe.  Activities include trick-or-treating at downtown storefronts and along the sidewalks, live dance performances by local dance groups, music by DJ Young Pete, free pony rides and more! The majority of the action will take place along Glen and Ridge Streets, and in City Park, all in Downtown Glens Falls.

Jack-O-Lanterns and Jets

Saturday, October 26, from 5 – 7 p.m. Join the Empire State Aerosciences Museum at 250 Rudy Chase Drive in Glenville as we hold our 1st ever “Jack-O-Lanterns and Jets”.  Free admission for the whole family! Make and take Halloween goodie bag craft. We’ll have treats from Dunkin Donuts, including free coffee for adults. Travel down the haunted hangar walk with treat stops among the planes (follow the monster feet trail). There will be a kid’s costume contest with prizes and a Jack-O-Lantern carving contest for local businesses. Grand prize for the Jack-O-Lantern carving contest is a one-year corporate membership to the Museum. (Please bring your carved pumpkins to the Museum by October 25). FUN for all ages!!

Monthly Indoor Craft and Garage Sale with Trick or Treating

On Sunday, October 27, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. the popular Elks Ladies Auxiliary Indoor Craft and Garage Sale will be held at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Club on Elks Lane. Off Marion Avenue. Admission is free with over 40 vendors, great parking, crafts galore, and lunch. Lots of shopping with necklace sets, earrings, body lotions, clothing, as well as household items, knitted and hand-made items, food treats, antiques and vintage items, and just about anything you can imagine. New vendors sign-up every month. A fun activity the entire family enjoys. All proceeds go to local charities. 8’ table and chairs $15. Reflections in Song – Canal Songs and Stories

Brookside Museum 21 Fairground Ave. Ballston Spa | 7 – 8:30 p.m. George Ward, folklorist and singer, “Canal Balladeer”, will present a program of historical and personal songs and stories reflecting two hundred years of New York State’s canals and their people. Join George on a relaxing Friday night as he takes us back in time through the wistful voices of the past.  His performance will include songs he has performed at folk festivals, in concert halls and coffeehouses, canal side, and on tour boats for fifty years. This event is free to attend but donations are gratefully accepted.

Carnegie Hall Ensemble Connect Residency

1780 Invasion Kiosk Opening

Trieble Park, Corner Rt 67 and Middleline Rd., Ballston Spa | 11 a.m. America’s Revolution in Upstate NY went well past the Saratoga Campaign in 1777. Join Reps from the Towns of Milton and Ballston, and Saratoga County, and members of the Saratoga Chapters of the DAR and SAR with Revolutionary War Reenactors at the open of this heritage site. Autumn Sunday Stroll: Summer Cottages of North Broadway

Explore the beautiful architecture of these impressive homes and learn about the people who built and lived in them during Saratoga’s summer seasons. With the fall foliage as a backdrop, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy both history and scenery. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Documentary: “America 250: The Ballston Connection”

The Waldorf School Autumn Festival

Drive Up and Register to Vote

Saratoga Spa State Park, Main SPAC Parking Lot (on the East side of Route 50), Saratoga Springs | 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County is holding our voter registration drive-up event. The event will provide an opportunity for New Yorkers to drive up to register to vote and receive other voter information, without ever having to leave your car, truck or “buggy”. Vehicles will be directed (via lawn signs with arrows) to pick up voter registration forms and information from the LWV table. They will then proceed to a parking place to complete the form, and when finished, will drive back to the other side of the table to hand in their completed form. League members will provide information and assistance, as requested.

7th Annual Saratoga Wing Off

Autumn Sunday Stroll: Historic West Side

“Low Bridge: The Erie Canal in Saratoga County”

3rd Annual Witch Walk & Dance

An exciting community event blending fun, philanthropy, and Halloween spirit, returns to Saratoga Springs on Saturday, October 19. “The Way We Were” Car Show

Historic Fort Hardy Park, Schuylerville | 10 a.m. See re-enactors simulate General Burgoyne’s sword surrender to General Gates. Stand in the footsteps of history this October 17, Surrender Day, at Fort Hardy Park. This 247th anniversary of the British surrender at Saratoga continues to mark America’s Turning Point in its War for Independence. Battle of Bemus Heights Walking Tour

Saratoga National Historical Park, The Tide Turns parking lot (stop 5), 648 Route 32, Stillwater | 1 p.m.  Join Park Ranger Eric Schnitzer as he gives a guided tour of the fields where the Battle of Bemus Heights – the second battle of Saratoga – was fought on October 7, 1777. The battle was one of the most decisive American victories of the Revolutionary War and put an end to the British scheme to capture Albany. Major new information has reshaped our understanding of Benedict Arnold’s role in the battle, and discussing his heroism in the fight will be a highlight of the tour. No sign-up required. “Color of Sound” Saratoga Community Arts Concert

Saratoga Senior Center, 290 West Ave., Saratoga Springs | 2 – 3 p.m. Flutist Melanie Chirignan along with pianist Melinda Faylor and cellist Laura Melnicoff – Classically trained musicians who take elements of classical pieces and reimagine them into improvised compositions. They commissioned artist Mercedes Soriano to take a time-lapse video of them painting to one of the trio’s improvisations, which will be projected behind the performers while they play live to it, adding a captivating visual component. Jeff ran Winslow’s Restaurant for many years after acquiring it from his grandparents, Tess and Harold Clute.  Many in Wilton still remember Tess and Harold and the wonderful turkey dinners they served.  Winslow’s has been a staple in Wilton and the turkey dinners are legendary.  Everyone is awaiting news on what’s next for Winslow’s.  Perhaps Jeff will solve that mystery for us.  Join us for a potluck dinner, followed by the presentation.

First Baptist Church Saratoga’s 231st Birthday Celebration! October 5, 2024. Vendors needed – we’re looking for vendors of all sorts with unique products and treasures to sell. Saturday, October 19 at The Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St. in Schuylerville from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. At 8:45 a.m., Judith Harper, will present the program “Add PERSI, ArchivGrid, and HDI to your Family Research Toolbox!” At 10:30 a.m., Keren Weiner will speak about “Digging Deeper, Finding Our Family Roots.” At 1 p.m., Lynn Calvin will talk about “Navigating the Saratoga County Genweb Site.” At 2:15 p.m., John Cromie will cover the topics “Underused Resources at the County Clerk’s Office” and “Ask a Lawyer Your Genealogy Questions.” Light refreshments and lunch will be provided. Third Annual Paint Collection Day

Genealogy and Local History

Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St. in Schuylerville | 1 p.m. Heritage Hunters will meet for a program titled, “Love Your Neighbor”, presented by Ruby Marcotte. It is about a small community “on the mountain”, west of Corinth where Ruby was raised. The community has a rich history of families and friends’ connectedness that continues today. Her talk will explore that persistent, multi-generational web. Ruby has been a Town historian, a folklorist, and a volunteer at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. Her latest photo exhibit at the Museum is “Saratoga Springs Storefronts on Broadway in 1867.” The public is welcome. For information call 518-885-9309.

Chicken BBQ

Native American Gardening

Autumn Sunday Stroll: Mail-Order Houses of Saratoga

Meet: Northwest corner of Lake and East Avenues, Saratoga Springs | 10:30 a.m. Madison C. Squires will highlight the “Kit House” era – a time when the average person could not only put a check through the mail, but order and receive an entire house as well. This tour features houses on East and Pinewood avenues. All Sunday morning tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Tours will be limited to thirty and tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. A Call to Spy Panel Discussion

Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, the historical drama, written by Sarah Megan Thomas and directed by Lydia Dean Pilcher, pays tribute to the “lady spies” recruited into England’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) during WWII. The SOE was a secret organization created in 1940 after the fall of France to the Nazis. Wednesday Walking Tours – Corinth Rural Cemetery

Corinth Rural Cemetery, 600 Palmer Ave., Corinth | 1 – 2:30 p.m. Corinth Town Historian Rachel Clothier will explore the stories behind the gravestones at this cemetery located on Route 9N as you enter the village. From soldiers and sailors to merchants and miscreants, attendees will discover a sampling of the people who have lived in Corinth over two centuries. A Saving Grace – A Unique Vietnam War Story

Come to the meeting of the Old Saratoga Historical Association as we explore some of the origin stories for this popular snack and discuss who may have been the first to fry up some “Saratoga Chips”. The program will be presented by Anne Clothier, Assistant to the Saratoga County Historian, who in 2022 curated an exhibit on the topic at Brookside Museum, home of the Saratoga County History Center.
